If You Can’t Post Daily You Should Keep Your Day Job
February 16th, 2007 by Court
I’m seriously amazed by the laziness of people I talk to. It seems like almost everyone asks me questions like, “What’s the minimum amount of updating I can do on my blog and get away with it?” I usually say something like, “Well, what’s the mimumun amount of money you can make without starving?”
I am shocked by people’s laziness and I get tired of such questions. People that succeed at this don’t ask questions like that. They ask themselves how they can create a better site. They try to find more value and insight that they can provide to their readers.
Making money with the internet requires you to write! I don’t see a way around it, and I get tired of seeing ads all over the place that say that XYZ Corporation can teach you to make money online without writing anything!
I seriously doubt it, and i don’t think that anyone should be telling that white one to others. In order for people to be interested in your site or blog, you have to bring something interesting to the table.
Don’t get me wrong, your writing doesn’t have to be perfect, but you do have to write. If you can’t add something to your site or blog daily, I don’t think it’s going to work well for you and you should probably find something else to make money with.
Two Reasons To Post Daily
Number One – Search Engine Optimization
Almost every good search engine wants to see updates to your site. Many sites and blogs are updated hundred of times everyday! You can’t expect to do very well if your site gets updated once a month. Everytime Google and MSN find updates on my sites, I get a traffic spike – more visitors! $$$
Number Two – You keep your visitors coming back!
Why would anyone keep checking a blog that never gets updated? If I’m interested in something I’ll be checking the sites and blogs that care to stay updated. There are a lot of blogs that I visit daily, everyone of them has new posts everytime I check it. This means that if you don’t want your site to FAIL you will update it every single day.
If reason number two isn’t enough for you, what are you thinking? Sometimes I try to write with frankness because some people don’t catch on otherwise. People need to see recent updates or they won’t come back again.
Yesterday I took my girlfriend to Las Vegas to a show for Valentines day. The show was great by the way. We saw “O” at the Bellagio. I would definitely recommend it. I haven’t written yet today, so here I am a little after midnight writing away. Waiting until tomorrow probably wouldn’t make a huge difference, but it’s good to get in the habit of writing everyday so here I am.
I did write yesterday before I left so I didn’t miss a day. I’m not perfect always but I do try to keep good habits. It works.

[...] This topic is highly debated, but I can tell you that you should try to blog every single day. A blog gives you the unique ability of getting repeat visitors that will come back every single day. Most websites don’t have this kind of draw, but you can! Of course, if I go to your site tomorrow and see the exact same thing I saw yesterday, why would I check it everyday? If you want to do well, you will create new entries at least 5 times per week. Nice article Court. I too try to post daily. I think it is a key trait that many successful blogs have in common. Though some blogs like Steve Pavlina’s are updated about every 2 days with very long, quality articles — and are very successful. Sometimes if I get caught up in writing a long article, it may take a couple days…

This is a great point — very true. Daily blogging is fun, and much more likely to get great results than monthly or weekly.
More than once or twice per day on a single blog is probably too much, I’m thinking. After that, it’s probably good to split into multiple blogs.

Hi Court,
Great site you got there. I have to agree with you. I am amazed at people’s laziness. I think it might have something to do with our current American culture. In any case, you are right. If you are going to make money blogging, you have to treat it like a business. Most people have no clue how to start a business. I personally think that is a niche that needs filled. Not make money blogging, or how to blog, but how to build a blog empire, or blog small business.
Cheers,
Jeremy
