Get More Traffic - Technorati Tags

March 23rd, 2007 by Court

*Update (4/7/2007) Here is a link that you can use to generate code for your tags. You just have to type in the word you want to use for the tag, and it will generate the tag code for you. Tag Generator. If you don’t know what Technorati tags are yet, read on!

If you’re a blogger, you would probably like to increase your traffic. :) If you don’t care, two questions: 1. Why are you a blogger? 2. Why in the world are you at this site?

If you want to increase your blog’s exposure, make sure you’re using Technorati Tags! Technorati is a blog search engine, so getting your blog in their listings can bring you some valuable visitors.

How Technorati Works
Technorati gathers the latest blog entries and organizes them into categories. They have thousands of different categories; your most recent post might fit in quite a few of them. If you play your cards right, you can get your entry into each of the relevant categories. If you get your site into a few extra categories, it will really increase your exposure, and the amount of people that will ultimately find you. Additionally, if other bloggers find your material and like it, they might link to it, getting you even more exposure.

In order to get into the proper Technorati categories, you have to tag your blog entries. At the bottom of the entry you will make some links that point to Technorati. These links are called Technorati Tags. To make this easier to understand, I will place the Technorati Tags for this entry here:

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

After I publish this article, you’ll be able to find it in each of the above categories in Technorati. (Your blog will automatically alert Technorati that you have a new entry on your site, and Technorati will find your tags, letting them know what categories they should put it in.)

How To Add Technorati Tags To Your Entry/Post/Article

A Technorati Tag is really just a link to the correct page of Technorati. In order to make a Technorati Tag, you will need this code:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/sample" rel="tag">sample</a>

If you look closely at the code, you will see the word ’sample’ is in there, twice. This particular code would make a tag for Technorati’s sample category. Let’s say that I wanted to make a tag for the ‘movies’ category. Here’s is the code I would use:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/movies" rel="tag">movies</a>

If you look closely to this code, you see that I replaced ’sample’ with ‘movies’, and now ‘movies’ is in there twice. You will replace the word sample with whatever category tag you want to use. If you want to use ten tags, you will need to make ten pieces of code, one for each.

In some cases, you will have a tag with more than one word. In that case, here is the code you will use:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/sample+phrase" rel="tag">sample phrase</a>

Upon close examination you will discover that I used a + sign in between sample and phrase in the first instance, but used a regular space for the second. If I wanted to make a tag for the ‘cell phones’ category of Technorati, here is the code I would use:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/cell+phones" rel="tag">cell phones</a>

Here is the code that I used to create the tags for this document:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/traffic" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/traffic">traffic</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/blogging" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/blogging">blogging</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/blog" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/blog">blog</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/tags" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/tags">tags</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/tag" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/tag">tag</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/tagging" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/tagging">tagging</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/blog+marketing" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/blog+marketing">blog marketing</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/blog+promotion" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/blog+promotion">blog promotion</a>, <a href="http://technorati.com/tag/successful+blog" rel="tag" xhref="http://technorati.com/tag/successful+blog">successful blog</a>

You will notice that after the code for each tag, I typed a comma. This is obviously because I wanted to seperate the tags with commas. When you’re ready to insert your tags, make sure you go into the code view section of your write post page. If you’re using WordPress, you will see either an HTML button directly above the place where you type your post, or you will see a code tab in the same area. When you click these, you will see the code for your post entry. You will paste your tag code at the bottom, that way the tags will appear down there.

If you don’t know which categories to use, you should go to Technorati to do some searching. Search for things related to your topic. If you’re blog post is about money, go to Technorati and search for money. Technorati will suggest related categories like finance, investing, and so on. You can make a tag for each category that is related to what you wrote.

It may be tempting to tag your article with a hundred or so tags that are loosely related to your post. This won’t do you any good at all, Technorati will think you’re tag spamming (you would be tag spamming), and may ban your blog altogether. Most of the time you will use between 2 and ten tags. Each tag needs to be closely related to what your article is about. This will ensure maximum visibility while maintaining your ability to use Technorati.

Using Technorati Tags will help your exposure a lot, especially if you’re a daily poster. Tips for getting the most out of your Tags:

  • Post Daily
  • Post In The Morning (The morning traffic at Technorati is greater than afternoon and evening traffic. You want your articles to appear at the top of Technorati’s pages while there are tons of people looking at them. If you’re not in the U.S., you should post in the morning, U.S. time. If you can’t post in the morning, you can set your WordPress blog to post your entry in the morning even if you wrote the article in the evening. Look for the time stamp feature on your ‘Write Post’ page)
  • Use 2-10 Tags
  • Link To Me - Just kidding this won’t help you but it will help me, so you better do it. :)

Using Technorati Tags will help you a lot, but it’s not the only thing you need to do to promote your blog. For more tips, you should check out these articles: Permalinks, Related Posts Plugin, and Traffic. You should also visit the SEO and Blog Promotion sections of this site.

Happy tagging!

Hi,thanks for the tips.
I am glad that I stumbled upon your blog.
I have been wondering how bloggers put the tags on their blogs.Honestly speaking, I really do not know that the tags are so important.
Thanks again.
I’ll put you in my Internet Gurus’ Money Making Tips for future reference.

Welcome Vedis Teh!
Thanks for the honesty! Tags can help quite a bit, I’m still getting traffic from a tag I made almost a month ago!

Hey Court,
When it comes to Technorati tags is there an incorrect way of doing it? For instance, if you have a keyword phrase that applies and you find another one that applies well but is very closely related in words, but phrased differently, will that matter? Such as “grants for small business” compared to “small business grants”?

Cade,
Very good question! You can and should use them both as some people will search one way and some with search the other way.

This seems a lot of work if you have to do this for every post you write. Does it actually generate traffic amounts worth the trouble?

Technorati tags never worked for me. Its just that some of them with PR provide some google love, thats all. You need to aim some very important keywords and staying on top on competitive keywords is always hard!

Technorati tags work the best for me if I publish during the most active times at Technorati. I’ve experimented with it, and that’s why I usually publish between 7 and 9 MDT. Maybe you should give it a shot!

I just tried this out on my blog that uses the smart update pinger plugin, and pings are not generated when I publish a timestamped post.

I’ll have to wait until tonight to verify if a ping happens when the post is finally shown.

Do you need to display the tags at the end of the post, or can they remain invisible and still be effective. In other words, can the tag be built like this:

I’m thinking it keeps the blog layout neater with out the tags hanging out at the bottom.
