How To Choose A Killer Topic For A Blog

April 20th, 2007 by Court

So you want to start a blog. That’s a wise decision, but that fact alone doesn’t qualify you to read this page. If you want to start a lovely little blog that you can use to pass some time, you’ve found the wrong page. There’s nothing wrong with having those types of blogs, but that isn’t the topic of the discussion for this entry. If you’re not ready to commit to creating something great, reading this post will be a waste of your time.If you’re still reading you shouldn’t want to just start any old blog. You should want to start a killer blog that everyone wants to read, the kind that will help you to achieve:

  1. Fame (If you want it)
  2. Financial Independence - Owners of killer blogs quit their jobs to be ‘dot com moguls’. :)
  3. Respect from others and self.
  4. Flexibility of Schedule.

Do you dream of becoming famous? (I actually don’t really want to be famous but I do like being successful.) Do you want to be financially independent? Do you want to have more time to play? To you want to get away from your dead end job? Do you want to get away from your really good job?

If you want those things, please believe that you can have them. I’m not going to try to sell you something, I’m going to help you to make it happen. If any part of you believes that you can have those things read on, because you’re ready to start a killer blog.

Every killer blog needs a killer topic.

In order to choose a killer topic, you must follow the money. Here are two things that you need to consider to determine if there’s going to be enough money in the potential topic:

  1. Level of Interest - If the potential subject material isn’t searched for often, there probably isn’t going to be a ton of money to be made. You should use the Overture Keyword Selector Tool to find out how many times per month words related to your potential topic are searched for (the tool shows searches per month on Yahoo). All you have to do is type the words and hit enter. A quick search of ‘make money’ will show you that people do that search 209,000 times per month. ‘Make money online’ is searched for about 43,000 times per month on Yahoo. Between Google, Yahoo, and MSN there will definitely be enough interest to make some mad cash, if you were to get traffic from the phrases. I would choose areas that have at least 100,000 searches per month.
  2. Big Business - Are there big businesses making money in the area you want to blog about? There should be! I’m in the ‘make money’ market, and I’m potentially competing with Robert Kiyosaki, Robert Allen, Darren Rowse, John Chow, and Shawn Casey - all ‘make money’ guys that have already made loads of cash from it. If there aren’t any big businesses making money in the potential market you’re looking into, you should ask yourself why. That area probably doesn’t have the potential you’re looking for. If there are big businesses, they will be paying Google for your adsense clicks. Their competing with each other will drive up the click price.

I know that we all dream of starting something that is absolutely original. There are still plenty of original ideas are out there! How does that mix with the idea of choosing a topic that is already being used by big business? That is the question I’ve been thinking about for quite some time…..

Here’s The Killer And Somewhat Obvious Answer

You have to take the original topic and twist it. Would it do me any good to blog about all the same stuff that ProBlogger and John Chow blog about? Of course it wouldn’t! They have been around longer than I have and already have a reader base. I don’t want to be a copycat of someone else because I want this site to be great.

How To Twist A Topic

The first thing you have to do is find the best sites out there that cover your topic. When I was developing my vision for this site, I spent a lot of time reading ProBlogger.net, JohnChow.com, and Shoemoney.com. I like all of their sites, and still read them on a daily basis. What you have to realize to twist a topic is that there isn’t a single perfect site in the entire known universe.

Don’t get me wrong, they are all great sites and I read them daily, but I saw a problem with every one of them! Regular people aren’t going to understand a lot of what they write, and this means they can’t market to people that don’t know what they’re doing… and a killer idea for a topic was born.

I want to develop my brand as a place that people that don’t know where to get started can go to learn. It’s all the same topics, from a different angle. That’s how you twist a topic, you take something that’s out there, and create it for a different group of people.

Another Topic I Twisted

I have wanted to create a really good cell phone site for a few years now. Years ago I sold cell phones, and learned a ton about them. One thing I learned back then is that people really don’t know much about phones and they have a lot of questions about them.

About 2 months ago (about the same time I started this site) I wanted to create a really good cell phone site and I was trying to decide how I wanted to do it. There are some outstanding blogs about cell phones out there, EngadgetMobile comes to mind, and for a while I wasn’t sure how to make a site that stood out.

I started doing some keyword research with the Overture Keyword Selector Tool, and figured out that people search for individual phones quite a bit. When I started typing the individual phones in, I quickly realized that tons of people are searching for phones they already have! Seeing keywords like ’syncing the krzr’, ‘krzr memory install’, and ‘remove krzr battery’ made me realize that people are constantly searching for cell phone ‘how tos’. Some searching in Google showed that there really isn’t anything like that out there.

I started my site and posted some cell phone ‘how tos’. With minimal marketing effort, I’m already getting over 2,000 visitors per day within the first few months. (I think it will do quite well) Give it a year and I think I’ll have a home run with that one.

What’s funny is that all the information is in the user’s manuals, (which I can easily find online) but people would rather search for it. :)

I really believe that there are still tons of ideas for killer topics out there. There are so many angles you can use!

Summary Of How To Choose A Killer Topic

  • Find a topic that is already searched for a lot. Use the Overture Keyword Selector Tool to find topics that are searched for at least 100,000 times per month.
  • Find a topic that has big businesses that are already making a lot of money.
  • Start reading the best sites out there on the topic.
  • Twist The Topic

I really hope that you have enjoyed the lesson and that it has been a help. I hope that you can use it to find a killer topic. If you come up with something great, be sure to let me know! I would love to do a spotlight of your site to help get you started.

Hi Everyone,
I have a carpet cleaning business in Houston,TX that was doing pretty good until the economy went bad, and with it my clientele. I have a website for the business but I dont
know what I have to do the get it to show up in a search. Right now it’s somewhere in the yahoo/google netherworld (LOL).

Is there someone on here that can give me some insight or know of anyone that coud give me insight on how I can get my local website on the front
page of a Yahoo or Google search to increase my business without it costing me 5 or 10k $$$? If so please share with me.

I thank you and my hungry over-eating children thank you.

thanks,

Hey Court…

I have to say you have an amazing site, have been reading for a few months now. But just now getting into all of your old stuff. I did have a question for you though, how can you tell who the big rollers are in your niche? I mean I can probably tell by how many subscribers they have right?

Thanks for your time
–JIM
