An Oldie But A Goodie - Directory Listings

April 27th, 2007 by Court

In the era of web 2.0, we all feel a ton of pressure to hit the latest trends in social marketing. Digg, Technorati, MyBlogLog, Reddit, and others have taken the internet by storm. They have changed ways that many people find websites and the internet has become a lot more fun for all of us.

Do we remeber that there is still a web 1.0? Do we remember that most people still find websites through Google and other search engines? We should! I think we tend to get a little blinded to this fact because we (webmasters and bloggers) belong to communities that are super two point o’d.

I think that many of us have stopped doing the traditional marketing altogether. When was the last time you submitted to a directory? If you never have, I would recommend getting into some. This will help you to increase the old fashioned PageRank and to better your overall search engine rankings.

Where To Find Tons Of Directories

If you’re in need of finding a ton of free directories to get into, check out AddURL.nu. At last count, they had 985 directories listed that are 100% free, search engine friendly, and human edited, which are the qualifications of a directory that you want to get into for maximum benefit. Hit the list hard for the next month and watch your search engine traffic grow like gangbusters.

I like your thought that we “have stopped doing the traditional marketing alltogether.” I am guessing people are simply trying to do everything that is not related much to the offline world, like changing title tags repeatedly instead of submitting to directories.

Also, I think the fact that less people are talking about directories probably implies to many people that directories are dead, and thus those people do not add their sites to the directories. I am guessing it does not hurt to submit to directories, so one should try them anyhow. :)

Court - excellent advice (as usual). I am curious about a couple of things, and was wondering if you could delve into them a little further in a new post.

1) Ramifications of the PR of the various directories

2) Net effects of providing them with recip links vs. opting for the free “we’ll get to you when we can” submission.

Both points above are a source of confusion for many (I know because I’ve tried asking others). Can you help clarify?

Thank you for this information. I’ve been pondering over submitting to directories for some time now. Couldn’t decide if it was worth the time that one has to put in. It seems that it’s worth giving it a try.

Court - I’ve been reading your posts for about a week now and there are some great tips, keep em coming!
