10 Easy Ways To Make Yourself Look Like A Blogging Newbie
May 19th, 2007 by CourtIn 30 short pages my ebook shows you exactly how to set up a low-maintenance income online using free traffic from Google. You'll learn:
- How to discover keyword sets where the traffic potential is high but the competition is limited.
- How to set up quick, easy, search-engine friendly websites with no programming knowledge whatsoever.
- How to build those websites around high-paying keywords that will give you your first passive online income.
The ebook is free, but there is a catch - you have to actually download it, read it, and implement what it teaches. I'm not giving you this book for intellectual stimulation; I'm giving it to you so you can make money. Hundreds of my readers have used these principles to either create or increase their online income. You can do the same.
Just fill out the easy form below you'll be redirected to the download page. As a bonus I'll follow up with an email mini-course that outlines some of my biggest successes, failures, and key insights I've gained over the years as a full-time internet marketer. I'll send you the first installment right away. And don't worry - all you'll ever get from me is value-packed content. I'll never share, rent, or sell your personal information. Enjoy...and thanks for visiting!
<sarcasm>I’m sure that you all want everyone to think that you’re a blogging newbie! That’s what I want! Wouldn’t that be an awesome way to develop your brand?
For those of you that want to appear like you actually know a lot about putting together blogs and websites, sorry but you’ve found the wrong place! I’ve given this a lot of thought, and I think that looking like you started yesterday is one of the most important things you can do. I have compiled for you the greatest internet marketing list of all time:
10 Easy Ways To Make Yourself Look Like A Blogging Newbie
- Don’t use title case. Using ‘Make money online like a champ’ for your title would make you look 100 times more like a newbie than ‘Make Money Online Like A Champ’ would. You may want to consider leaving all of the words of your title in lower case, for maximum affect: ‘make money online like a champ’.
- Use the original URLs that look like this: http://courtneytuttle.com/?p=123. Bloggers that have more experience will use these: http://courtneytuttle.com/2007/02/27/not-using-permalinks-search-engine-suicide/. Make sure you don’t have URLs like that if you want to look like you started your blog last week.
- Make 26 categories for your 26 posts. This is a very effective way to look like a blogging newbie so make sure you don’t forget about this one! Adding a new category for every post is a powerful, advanced newbie disclosure method.
- Change your blog’s theme and layout every 13 hours, that way people will know with absolute certainty that you have no idea whatsoever what you want your blog to look like. Tweak your theme relentlessly so that your readers get a chance to see each ‘mess up’ you make in the process.
- Admit openly in your writing that you have no idea what you want your blog to be about. Consult with your readers about what kind of things they would like to learn. Better yet, hold a poll to allow your 7 active readers to determine your blog’s main topic.
- Spread yourself thin. Make sure to cover celebrity news, blogging, real estate, credit card debt, technology, programming, social media, home based business, fast cars, music, movies, books, computers, drug rehab, pet training, exercise, framing, construction, writing, photography, art, wealth, investment banking, and water balloon fighting. Definitely don’t become an expert at any one thing. That would make you look too well-informed and advanced.
- Install your blog in a directory named ‘wordpress’. Using http://yourdomain.com/wordpress/ for the main address of your blog would look a lot more newbie than http://yourdomain.com/ would.
- Use meaningless post titles. Titles like ‘Another meaningless Monday’ (You’ll notice that I’m ignoring title case for a double-newbie-effect.) and ‘Life sucks again’ are my personal favorites for looking newbieish. (Is newbieish even a word? Hmm.. Is newbie even a word?)
- Post erratically. Write 7 posts your first day, and then don’t post for a month. Then come back and post 9 times in a day, and then don’t post for another week. Trust me, it works. Do this, and you will definitely look like a newbie - people will surely take note.
- Beg every decent site you’ve ever heard of to link to you. Definitely don’t tell them about any posts you’ve written, just ask them to link to you without offering any reason at all why they should.</sarcasm>
Please no one take offense, this post is 20% a joke and 80% to show you a few things to avoid. I’ve personally made 9 of these common mistakes! It took me a few months to work them out of my system, so I thought it would help some of you that are starting out! Please let me know if you have any questions, I would be more than happy to help.
Along the lines of helping you out, Mark and I have created a new email mini-course entitled “5 Days to Success With Keywords.” The course walks you through the process of using Google to create a very passive income on the internet - cutting out all the time wasting most new internet marketers have to suffer through. You’ll get instant access to the course just by typing your email address in the box below. Dive in - we look forward to helping you create your first passive income online…and don’t worry - we’ll never share or sell your personal information. We’ll do nothing but send you high quality, practical information…

I disagree with point one - I don’t use ‘title case’ as you refer to it, because I personally prefer titles written using the same conventions as a sentence.
I guess it just comes down to personal preference, but I definitely wouldn’t say the capitalisation or non-capitalisation of titles marks a blogger out as a ‘newbie’.

I used to do it way as well! I definitely value your opinion on this one and I definitely don’t think it will cost anyone visits one way or the other.
I made the switch when I started reading more about copywriting and formatting. An interesting fact is that many people think that the way I do it is wrong, they say that the correct way is, “10 Easy Ways to Make Yourself Look Like a Blogging Newbie”. I use caps even for small words, and some say that it’s incorrect. I tried to choose the one that the most people use.
There are definitely differing opinions on this, and I value yours! Hopefully the other tips helped you out!

i Think It comes Down to Making it Easier for the user to Read What You are saying. it gets A Little confusing when You’re trying to Understand what is Being written!
May 19th, 2007 at 9:36 am
mee too I agree on all your points expect the first one. I use Caps for all my titles. I just like it like that
May 19th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Well I’m glad that I’m mostly agreed with, at least I know that I’m not 100% on crack!
May 19th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
I enjoyed this post– and I recognize a few “newbie” things that I’ve done.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
I’ve done them all plenty! I still need to clean up my categories a little actually.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
I have to confess, I commit the title case offense but I have a good excuse. Title case in my newspaper’s headlines is a big no-no, so it’s just a force of habit.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
I actually don’t really think that any single one of these make you look like a newbie. I think that when people do a combination people start to wonder…..
September 18th, 2008 at 6:10 am
I agree. I’m a professional writer, and — to my editors — I’d look like a newbie if I used title case for my articles, and sometimes my chapter headings.
By force of habit, I continue this with my online articles and posts.
That said, the title of my blogs (not the individual posts) are always in title case.
Other than that, this is a good list for me to review regularly… and I’ve been blogging since 1995, before the word “blog” was even in popular use.
May 19th, 2007 at 2:57 pm
Since I actually am a newbie, I´m going to take a giant leap and fix one thing right now. gulp. I tried to change my permalinks and ended up with a major error on my blog. If anyone can tell me how to fix this, it will be one less newbie error that I´m making! Great list, Court.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
I wish I could be more help with that, I do know that your web hosting has to be able to handle a function called ‘mod rewrite’ to be able to process the different permalink structure!
September 18th, 2008 at 6:13 am
See SEO tip #1 at http://www.robertplank.com/search-engine-optimization/ for the most complete advice I’ve found. If that doesn’t work, I’d ask the author of that article.
May 19th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
lol
I must admit that for a few seconds you had me going. But then I realized it HAD to be a joke!
What are blogs anyway. Are those the things with writing on the Interweb?
Just curious!
May 19th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Haha that’s funny.
I think blogs have something to do with the AOL but I’m not sure, haha
May 20th, 2007 at 2:06 am
For me, Point #6 is not something to avoid, it’s my motto! But then, my blog is an anything and everything snark blog.
Now if I was planning to make money by blogging, I probably would do things differently. As it stands, I think my readers like my blog the way it is.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
I guess it all depends on what you’re going for! If it’s for fun, then you might as well write about whatever you want!
May 20th, 2007 at 3:23 am
Opps! I’ve managed to make every mistake except the title case!
I also made the mistake of loads of categories and then listing the posts in every category.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Yeah, I’ve almost made them all too.
Oooohhh, I didn’t even think of that mistake, that one maybe should have been number 11.
May 20th, 2007 at 5:05 am
I’d say that http://courtneytuttle.com/2007/02/27/not-using-permalinks-search-engine-suicide/ is still a newbieish URL
Probloggers would use this: http://courtneytuttle.com/not-using-permalinks-search-engine-suicide/
May 20th, 2007 at 11:41 am
You got me!!! That URL is more search engine friendly for sure. I like users to be able to see when an article was written though, so I left the date in there and will continue to do so.
John Chow does it the way you recommended, but ProBlogger (Darren Rowse, problogger.net) does it my way.
May 20th, 2007 at 10:15 am
I recognize a few “newbie” things that I’ve done too…
nice post!
May 20th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Why thanks!
May 20th, 2007 at 11:46 am
when I read the list, it sounded like you were talking directly to me, especially #6.
May 20th, 2007 at 12:09 pm
Lol, I can assure you that I wasn’t! I think I was talking to myself on that one, my categories could use an overhaul.
May 20th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
So true, I have made some of these mistakes as well. I just have to learn!
May 20th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
funny haha not even sure that’d make a correct code. but good list.. I think I still do some of those mistakes because I am a newbie, I”m not denying that and I really don’t mind taking my time learning
May 21st, 2007 at 9:47 am
I bet that we’ll all see more and more things that look newbieish as time goes on. I’m sure I’m still doing some newbie things, I kind of am a newbie still.
May 20th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
heh I put the word Really between and before Funny but it didn’t appear (just so you know what code I’m talking about lol
May 21st, 2007 at 3:06 am
You should check out your “How much is your blog worth” thingy - I did, ‘cos I was sure it would be worth more… I was right!
Being a newbie, i thought it updated itself, but it doesn’t…
May 21st, 2007 at 9:47 am
I checked it out, thanks for the heads up!!
November 18th, 2008 at 5:38 am
I would love to find this out. Can you post the link.
May 21st, 2007 at 1:10 pm
I would add making lots of typos. That’s what kills me and I’m just starting to learn how to do a better job editing.
May 21st, 2007 at 2:39 pm
True that! MAkinG typoss difenitely makes you look likke you don’t know whatt you’re doing.
May 21st, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Oh my goodness! That’s hilarious! It takes me back to the good old days when I had no clue what I was doing…I think that was last week sometime. Great post Court! I’m definitely going to have to stumble and digg this one, and I’m pretty picky.
May 23rd, 2007 at 11:22 am
I’m totally still a newbie, but don’t tell anyone.
Thanks for the stumble and digg! I can always use those, but more importantly I’m just glad that you liked the post!
May 22nd, 2007 at 9:13 am
As newbie I need posts like this. Want to be a ‘big boy’ as soon as possible!
May 23rd, 2007 at 11:23 am
I’ll keep writing them then! I want to be a ‘big boy’ too!
May 22nd, 2007 at 11:26 pm
Really interesting, the thing is I’m really a blogging newbie
I think you are a blogging genius
May 23rd, 2007 at 11:24 am
I’m definitely not a genius, but I don’t mind if you tell people that I am.
I think that more than anything I just try to do a lot of research, and I experiment a lot.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:00 am
Hi. Thanks for this list. I’ve been changing themes lately. Couldn’t find a them that suits my need yet. Anyway, I am just 6 months old to blogging.
May 31st, 2007 at 11:04 am
One more thing. I just made a spelling mistake in my earlier comment. I am not able to edit my comment. The ‘them’ supposed to be ‘theme’. Thank you.
June 1st, 2007 at 4:08 am
Hahahhaahhaaha… this article make me laugh.
I try to avoid those ‘mistakes’ above.
Greetings from Macedonia!
June 8th, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Court,
I love this! I am totally guilty of the category thing. When I started I’d create about three new categories for every post. So now my category list is HUGE. That’s one of the few design changes I have left on my list.
I was also amused that some people wrote semi-defensive comments because you’d clearly named something that they do!
Sara
June 8th, 2007 at 10:20 pm
I know! People shouldn’t take too much offense - I’ve made most of these mistakes.
If we don’t ever figure out that we’ve done things wrong we can’t ever improve!
June 12th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
wow, you definitely get all the points right on spot, enjoy your blog here.
I notice you also have “subscribe to your RSS” right after your post, is it working? I”m just got my implemented, will see what kind of result will bring to my blog.
June 16th, 2007 at 1:42 am
Hi, Court,
I have to trouble you..;D Could you give me a hand ??
You see, my sidebars are like hanging. How do I make them the same height as the content part ?
Please let me know the codes to add into my html ??
Thanks in advance.
Or maybe anyone out there can help me ?? Please…;D
Thanks

June 27th, 2007 at 6:12 am

June 27th, 2007 at 11:44 am
I think everyone has to make mistakes in order to get better. I made almost all of them!
July 1st, 2007 at 8:42 am

How’s things?
Have not been visiting for some time. But looks like your blog still rocks!
Nice post about newbie blogging. =)
I made some of those mistakes too.

Another thing that you should do is to communicate and build a good social networking among your blogging network.

Question for you Courtney.
On point #2, you mention updating your the default Wordpress permalink format from ?p=123 to a more meaningful format.
I agree. How did you update your existing posts (that contained links to the default format) to the new format? Or did Wordpress handle this for you internally?
Thanks. Love the work you are doing on your blog — very useful!

Hah! I finally stopped doing ALL of these! When I started ericsocia.net a month ago, I was literally doing just about every one of those things, with a couple of exceptions (like begging for links. I would never do that). Anyway, thanks for the laugh
November 15th, 2007 at 10:04 am
haha - you got flare for writing man!
“Post erratically” I know so many who fall under this - including yours truly
November 23rd, 2007 at 1:09 pm
To really look like a newbie, write for yourself and not any fool who stumbles on to your blog by accident.
At least then, you won’t be catering to the lowest common digg denominator.
November 26th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
I really like these kinds of lists… They usually stir up things a bit, generate comments and traffic… And sometimes provide good copy.
December 3rd, 2007 at 2:26 am
Nice list. I specially like #10 - beg for links. surely that is a better way than buying links from PR0 sites.
December 3rd, 2007 at 4:33 am
Yikes … I was guilty of at least 2 or 3 of those as recently as a month ago (especially the theme changing one). Hopefully things will continue to get better with time
January 6th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Really funny post. How about this. Use the default template and then make only one meaningless post.
May 8th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
haha I’ve seen those types before….usually freely hosted blog. Nothing but a template and one meaningless post. May be somehow the blogger-to-be lost his password or something! >,<

Did you really have to put the part in about changing crap on your blog so that everyone can see you mess up? I had issues with a new plugin that I was experimenting with when everything when haywire. One minute you could see my blog, next minute it was gone, the next would leave the comments looking kind of fuzzy, it just was not a pretty picture. Lesson learned from this; let someone else do the experimenting for you.

I cracked up at the “have wordpress as the folder name” comment…that’s soooo true! I like all words capitalized in a title, I think it’s essential to make a title seem important.
March 13th, 2008 at 12:45 am
There are a few things I know I’m doing. I am really concerned right now about the layout. Blogger is just too constrictive. Now is that a word?
March 16th, 2008 at 11:54 am
what do you mean constrictive?
July 17th, 2008 at 4:02 am
Any widget that I add (ie Digg) I have to do massive configuration. Anything that I want to change in blogger that I wouldn’t have to in wordpress is a major process… for example anything related to code in SEO is a hassle.
And then with layout all blogger blogs look the same unless the user does something MAJOR to it. I have finally gotten the opportunity to do something major with a new blog but it took days off of work to get everything configured.
I still haven’t been able to get Digg to work the way I want!
March 15th, 2008 at 5:51 am

I’ve made many of these mistakes.
I want to start a new blog and you are certainly an inspiration.
Question: Are any wordpress themes any better or worse than others for SEO?
Does it matter?
Now THAT is a newbie question:)

This post is brilliant and thanks for brightening my day! Good to see you admit that you once made those mistakes too Court.
Cheers

Good info there! In fact I am a new blogger just 2 months old. I write about almost anything that strikes me and I STILL HAVE NO IDEA what the main thing my blog is about. >,<
April 29th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Jeez… I’m still a n00b.
Thanks for the great post! I just deleted the 60 or so categories I had!!!
May 6th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Hahaha that was both funny and informative and a tiiiny bit depressing because I’ve made at least 4 of those mistakes…or techniques to advertise my noobiness to the world lol.
May 8th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
A lot of these things I noticed amongst many newcomers to blogging. In fact I still see these things daily. The one thing you mentioned that I see most are bloggers who write about everything from political debates to their opinion on a new cd.

Good list.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Wow, great tips. Thanks for doing this analysis and share it with us..
June 2nd, 2008 at 4:47 pm
I have either made, or am making all 10 of these mistakes. What a great post. I wouldn’t know what I was doing wrong if I hadn’t read this. Thanks Court!
June 12th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
That was hilarious. And, I think maybe some of us at some point in our ventures as bloggers and webmaster were guilty of at least one of those errors.
Daniel.

Very awesome, funny, and useful post. Seriously, thanks for the advice.

Courtney,
Thanks for your advice on blogging…it is so hard these days to get good solid advice without a selfish angle…and I appreciate that.

I acme across this post which was dated last year :00, so I am late to post lol.
To be honest, these are really big issues if a blogger still doing them after knowing that are useless strategies. But the article above should not be written this way which a little bit offensive, rather than this it should be informative and corrective.
best for you

I personally do not think that most of it will make yourself look like a newbie. Most people will tend to do some items above at random order. I guess it depends upon the situation.
July 14th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I’m REALLY bad about tags. REALLY BAD.
To be fair though, in my noob-ness, when I first started I thought they were like meta tags for search engines. I didn’t realize that they were just for my blog.
Still doesn’t mean I’m any better about it though, LOL.
July 17th, 2008 at 3:59 am
Well, I’ve spent a lot of time revamping my blog over and over again before I realized that it’s just not what I need it to be. After having it for a year, I only have one good post on it. I pretty much have scrapped it for now. I’ll come back to it. I’ve got a new one and from the get go I got it into a niche which is EXTREMELY important. I’m always reading the new advice you have for us bloggers and I’m glad that I can finally honestly put this good information to use on a blog with potential!
July 27th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Really funny, but yet so true. I have myself made some of these mistakes and find a lot of bloggers doing it too. Thanks for sharing in a funny way mistakes to avoid.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Funny post with lots of interesting tidbits.
August 3rd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Guilty on multiple counts. This helps me be more aware of how I use my site, now that I have read some of your other posts and will be monetizing it.
August 16th, 2008 at 3:08 am
Rewriting a URL is needed so that the search engine will see that you’re trying to optimize your blog.
In wordpress under Permalinks –> Go to custom structure and insert this
/%postname%/
That should set your URL more SEO friendly.

Sometimes you need to call a spade a spade. It can really help shake you out of your internet marketing stupor and back to some of the basics of blogging. It is hard though to keep up a steady stream of content on any blog, so I am pretty guilty of the erratic posting newbie-ism. There is just so much to do out there in the world that time management becomes a big issue.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:29 am
this has been my favorite post by you it really cracked me up i’m not a blogger but i still thought it was funny because i see what your talking about all the time.

LOL… Really funny post. As someone commented, I also made some of those mistakes too in the past
September 3rd, 2008 at 8:52 am
I have to confess, I commit the title case offense but I have a good excuse. Title case in my newspaper’s headlines is a big no-no, so it’s just a force of habit.
September 4th, 2008 at 7:45 am
Oh dear, I’m guilty of a handful of those.
Time for a blogging upgrade methinks…

I admit, I did make some of these mistakes when I first started out, but have gotten it back on track. I know what to do now. Great post.

Hooray, I’m not guilty of any of these! Although I must say, while I put #1 into practice, the Grammar Nazi inside of me gets really annoyed at this trend.

I’m totally confused. Is the original article about being a “newbie” all sarcasm, or do you really do these things? I am serious. Actually, I have yet to read my first blog. Guess I’m a dinosaur. I’m ready to start something, but want to know if the article was sincere, or for humor. Thanks.
January 1st, 2009 at 2:37 am
Barbara - Some newbies do commit those mistakes. The article is both sincere and 20% humour as blogged,”Please no one take offense, this post is 20% a joke and 80% to show you a few things to avoid.”
Happy New Year!
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:42 pm

This has been a quiet hilarious yet informative read. Generally speaking, I have to say that these 10 are sure things to avoid whether you are a blogging newbie or not. Really, updating quiet a lot with useful posts is a neat way to have your blog a reputable image towards readers and visitors. If you have actually done these things before then your experience really is rich. ( I am not sarcastic, afterall as the sayong goes, we all learn from our mistakes.)
May 12th, 2009 at 3:52 am
Hehe.. you right, you right.. I love your post very much,
Nikita.

May 14th, 2009 at 6:18 am
Good information and a great help, thanks
May 18th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Hi Courtney,
Excellent post - especially point 9
Out of curiosity - which was the one mistake you managed to avoid, when you first started?
I personally haven’t begged for links, but most of the other points seem quite familiar at one point or another
Greetings,
Margot-Helena

As far as “wordpress” in your domain… yes it does look newbie-ish, but if your site is good enough, no one will care. Just look at Seth Godin’s site.

How can I change the http://courtneytuttle.com/?p=123 into the post title? Any plugin for that or is that just the theme?
June 15th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Oh, the sarcasm is hilarious!
I tend to have a problem with updating my blog as I am still in school and I become very busy. I spread out my posts, but you can still see a huge gap in dates sometimes.
I used to constantly change my theme, but I have settled down with the one I have now even though I could find much better.
Still, very good tips and I hope people listen to these tips.
