FTP stands for ‘file transfer protocol’. It is a way to send files from one computer to another. People use FTP for a variety of applications, but the most common is to transfer web pages to their hosting service on the internet.

FTP Client Software

There are programs that make it possible for you to connect to a web hosting account and other types of computers on the internet, and these programs are called FTP client software. You can open these programs on your computer, and use them to upload and download files from another computer or server (hosting account) on the internet.

Some very popular FTP clients for Windows include FileZilla and SmartFTP. FTPClient is a very popular one for Mac OSx.

Common Uses Of FTP

  • Transferring web pages to a hosting account server.
  • Uploading blogging plugins and themes.
  • Connections for online games.
  • Downloading/uploading videos, music, and software.
