AntiSocial WordPress Plugin Reviewed + Install Guide
June 21st, 2007 by CourtThe AntiSocial plugin (download) is ironically a very social plugin. After it’s installed WordPress displays a line of buttons that connect the reader to popular social bookmarking sites:
Users can easily submit your posts to social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit, Del.Icio.Us, StumbleUpon, and other popular, social sites. Once submitted, your posts will appear on these very high traffic sites, and will go through a voting process against other posts that have been submitted. If your post gets a lot of votes, it could be seen by thousands of people.
The first step obviously is to get your posts submitted. Installing this plugin makes that step a lot easier - the row of buttons simplifies the process and also reminds the reader that they can submit your material.
AntiSocial is actually a hacked version of the Sociable plugin, and is almost exactly the same plugin. AntiSocial adds ‘nofollows’ to each of the link buttons and Sociable uses actual links that give away ‘link juice’. Adding a row of links to every page and post in your site could leak some PageRank, so I would recommend going with AntiSocial. You can find a more detailed explanation of the effect on PageRank here: 3 Easy Ways To Rock The Next PageRank Update.
How To Install The Anti-Social Plugin
Installing Anti-Social is fairly simple - much easier than installing Ultimate Tag Warrior.
You’ll need to know how to download, extract, and upload files. Here’s a step-by-step:
1. Download Anti-Social.
2. Extract the folder that you downloaded using your mouse. Right click your mouse on the folder and select ‘Extract All’. You will then probably have to click ‘Next’ a few times to get it extracted.
3. The extracted folder will be called ’sociable’. Upload the ’sociable’ folder to the wp-content/plugins folder of your website. Here’s a lesson on how to upload using FTP if you need it.
4. Login to your WordPress admin and go to ‘Plugins’.
5. Find the plugin called ‘Sociable’ and click the ‘activate’ link that appears next to it.
That’s it! You’re good to go.
Configuring AntiSocial
By default, the row of buttons will not appear on your homepage, but will appear on your individual post pages. I would recommend configuring AntiSocial to show the row of buttons on your homepage as well, especially if you show your entire posts there. Here’s the step-by-step to include the buttons on your homepage:
1. Login to your WordPress admin.
2. Click ‘Options’.
3. Click ‘Sociable’.
4. Select ‘Front page of the blog’. (It’s near the bottom of the page)
5. Click ‘Save Changes’.
That’s it, you’ve done it. You should now be able to see the row of buttons of both your homepage and individual post pages.
You probably noticed while you were configuring AntiSocial that you can choose from quite a few social bookmarking sites. The ones I have selected are Digg, Reddit, Del.Icio.Us, Netscape, Spurl, Taggly, Technorati, YahooMyWeb, De.Lirio.Us, Fark, Furl, Netvous, NewsVine, and StumbleUpon.
You can select the ones you want and click ‘Save Changes’.
Overall this plugin is a must have. If you have a significant amount of traffic you’re really missing out if you don’t use AntiSocial or Sociable. Loyal readers will submit your material and bring hoards of traffic to your neck of the woods. More traffic means more money made online. ![]()

Hey court we are having difficulty accessing the antisociable plugin. Can you put it on your site?

Yeah I’ll provide a download here until Andy gets his site fixed. Hopefully he’ll be back up soon.

This is a great hack, after your mention f this plugin a couple weeks back i decided to do the hack myself, after about 2 hours of trying and learning from my mistakes i got it working. I know i could have downloaded the ready made one but it was a great way to get a better understanding of PHP.

I have no idea what i am doing wrong, but after I change checked icons i am getting tons of errors on admin panel, something like:
Warning: implode(): Bad arguments. in /home/dydomain/public_html/wp-content/plugins/sociable/sociable.php on line 651
Sociable tried to check for updates but failed. This might be the way PHP is set up, or just random network issues. Please visit the Sociable website to update manually if needed.
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/mydomain/public_html/wp-content/plugins/sociable/sociable.php on line 762
and line 797
Any ideas how i can fix that?

Did you get it fixed ok? It seems to be working on your site without any problems. I hope so!

LOL, that’s strange thing really. Looks like it works ok, but in admin panel every time I try change and save settings for this plugin I am getting same errors…
Maybe something wrong with my permissions…

Hmm I’ve been trying to install both the Social and Antisocial Plugins, but have been receiving the same error messages as well. :/

[…] The Zoom vote badge. Yep, its a link to BZ. Now, not to an important page, but you are passing link juice to BZ when you use this. Now, many of you don’t mind this because they provide a link back to your site, it seems only fair, but you are passing link juice to BZ. Court and Vic are very aware of the effects of follow and no-follow on social networking vote badges/buttons. Court says in his post on the anti-social plugin: “AntiSocial adds ‘nofollows’ to each of the link buttons and Sociable uses actual links that give away ‘link juice’. Adding a row of links to every page and post in your site could leak some PageRank, so I would recommend going with AntiSocial” (Court). […]
