Saturday Case Study - HowToMobile.com Case Study (Week 4)

June 30th, 2007 by Court

The Saturday theme here at CourtneyTuttle.com is a ‘make money online’ case study of a HowToMobile.com, which was started on June 6th of this year. The site is brand new this month! I basically work on the site during the week, and update you on its progress every Saturday.

If you haven’t read my Saturday posts before, here are the archives by week: 1, 2, 3.

This week I planned on adding quite a bit of content - I was able to add some, but I didn’t get it added until this morning. The new content obviously didn’t attract a lot of visitors to the site. :)

Statistical Recap

This week the stats were pretty strong, especially in the beginning of the week. The statistical week this time was from 6/22 to 6/28. The site received 2,471 page loads from 1,135 unique visitors. During the previous week, which was from 6/15 to 6/21 the site got 1,451 page loads from 817 unique visitors.

Google Adsense Revenue

I thought that the revenue would at least triple this week, and it did. The site made a total of $16.36 from Adsense. Over 80% of the clicks were from the 300×250 medium rectangle that I placed in the posts. If you missed the post on how to insert Adsense into posts, you should probably check it out.

Traffic Strategy

This week I really wanted to add a lot of material to HowToMobile, but the time wasn’t there. I did get a few simple lessons added, but they were added too late to make a difference. I guess they’ll help for this next week. I’m finding that splitting time between a few different projects is pretty difficult. I’m going to have to take my organizational skills to the next level in order to make this work. Luckily I don’t really have anything to lose since HowToMobile is already making a small profit.

The site needs a lot more material. So far I’ve only added lessons for one phone, and there are obviously hundreds of phones out there. I’m going to use at least 10 hours of my time this next week to write content for HowToMobile - it will be worth the time.

So far, I’ve only added a handful of links to HowToMobile. That makes me pretty excited because it’s already getting traffic with a very limited amount of authority. Once the site gets a lot more content and authority (links) it will be getting loads of traffic.

Solution To A Problem

Last week I brought up a potential problem for HowToMobile, which was organizing all of the pages so that users could easily find what they were looking for. I spent a lot of time working on possible solutions this week, and have decided that it needs to be organized like a traditional site. I’m going to make a page for Motorola, which will show all of the Motorola phones that I have lessons for. I will then make separate pages for each additional manufacturer, listing the phones of each. Each phone will also have its own page, which will show all of the lessons available for the perspective phone.

This kind of organization will take extra time, but will add to the usability of the site. It should make a pretty big difference for search engine optimization as well.

Overall Thoughts At This Point

I’m pretty excited about the site. I feel like the traffic is outstanding considering how ‘young’ the site is. Here in 2 months or so I think it will be doing really, really well.

Thats a fantastic report, the adsense earnings are qite impressive considering the age, What you earned in 1 week is the same as my may earnings!! Im sure once word gets out about this case study there will be aquite a few howtomobile clones popping up! Im tempted to try a similar how to site but am still thnking of a niche. Maybe in a month or so when i have more seo under my belt!

I think the raw number of people searching for technology related help is pretty high. I think it’s probably the case with all kinds of electronics.

Hello Court,

Congratulations on your success so far. I am curious about what specific traffic generating methods you have found to be most successful this past week. Is most of your traffic coming from search engines, blog/forum comments or other means? Thanks.

Thanks Greg! I would say that a majority is coming from Google. I haven’t had any Yahoo hits yet. I’ve also had some visits from blogs and forums, but Google is probably at least 80% of it.

Wow! Great Start.

I must admit that I am bit jealous. Your weekly stats are closer to my monthly stats.

Oh well, time to post more quality content and drag those readers to me :)

I think the trick is to find subjects that aren’t as well covered. HowToMobile’s traffic will likely pass CourtneyTuttle.com’s before too long.

Hey Courtney, thanks again for the info. I love it.

Suggestion - I believe the search engines read your code on the site as: h1-h4-h2-h2-h3-h3-h3

I would like to see either take the h4 off or change h4 to h2.

I think the search engines see that h4 and get confused and stop reading at that point.

Just trying to give back to you. I’ve gotten a lot from you.

Thanks again.

You are very welcome. You’re right with the code suggestion it would be better that way.

HowToMobile hasn’t been totally optimized yet, I actually haven’t even chosen any main keywords to target at this point. I should be doing that within the next week or two though.

Thanks for the help, it’s definitely something I’ll change!
