Explanation Of ‘Anchor Text’
July 2nd, 2007 by CourtAnchor text is the text you use when you make a link. Here’s a simple example of a link that uses anchor text: internet marketing. If you clicked the link, you would end up on my home page. The anchor text I used to make the link is ‘internet marketing’.

How To Properly Use Anchor Text In Internal Links
When linking to pages within your site, you should always use relevant anchor text (text that describes what the page you’re linking to is about). You’ll notice that in the previous section I linked to a post using the title of the post an the anchor text. This will have a positive effect on the search engine ranking of that page. The effect will be a lot more powerful than it would be if I had linked to the page without related anchor text, i.e. click here. ‘Click here’ doesn’t tell search engines what the page is about, so it doesn’t have as much benefit.

If your anchor text doesn’t describe the destination URL, you should make sure to use a title tag within your anchor element, such as in the below example.
<a href=”http://www.matthuggins.com” title=”Make Money Blogging”>Click Here</a>

Good explanation. I agree with web360 that this is often overlooked by new webmasters. I would add that the power of deep linking, when combined with proper anchor text pointing to optimized pages, is overlooked by even some experienced webmasters.
