If You Don’t Use This Browser Arsenal You’re Probably Losing Business
July 2nd, 2007 by CourtAlmost every website that has ever been created looks different in different browsers. 59% of the visitors of CourtneyTuttle.com use Firefox 2.0.0, 17.8% use Internet Explorer 7.0, 13.6% use Internet Explorer 6.0, 1.6% use Safari, and about 1% use Opera. When I first created my new layout, it looked terrible in IE6! The header looked really bad – IE6 showed it as about 200 pixels tall even though it’s only about 80px.
Where is gets interesting is when you start to look at sites that don’t get a lot of blog traffic. If you look at the browser stats for HowToMobile.com (my current case study) you will get totally different stats. The overwhelming majority of visitors to that site use either Internet Explorer 6.0 or Internet Explorer 7.0.
Do you know what your site looks like in all of those browsers? It’s very common to have your layout look totally messed up in IE6, even though it looks perfect in IE7. Do you know what happens when someone finds your site and sees a messed up layout? They click the back button asap.
My Browser Arsenal
I like to make sure that my site looks decent in all of these browsers, because I get hits from all of them. IE5.5 isn’t very common anymore, but I still see hits from people using it every once in a while.
This is a screen shot of the upper left hand corner of my desktop. Whenever I’m working on a new design, I check it in all of these browsers to make sure that it looks ok in all of them.
The trickiest browser by far for me is Internet Explorer 6. It usually takes me some fiddling to get my layout designs looking good in IE6. I really wish that Microsoft would force everyone to upgrade because it’s a lot easier to design for IE7.
How To Run Both IE6 and IE7 On The Same Computer
The problem you’re going to run into is that Internet Explorer 7.0 replaces Internet Explorer 6.0. For a while I kept IE6 on one of my computers and IE7 on a different one, but that got really annoying so I started looking for another solution, which I found.
I found a page that has a download that allows you to install the old Internet Explorer browsers without replacing IE7. If you don’t have IE7 yet, I would get it before using this program. You can find the download here: multiple internet explorer browsers. Look for a link labeled ‘Download Multiple IE installer‘.
Once you download the installer, run it. The program will allow you to choose which versions of IE you want to install (none of them will replace the IE7 that you already have):

I would choose at least IE6, IE5.5 isn’t used that much but there are a few old timers still using it.
After you have a look, let everyone know how it looked! Do any of your sites look funny in any of the browsers? Are you having a problem getting something to look good in a certain browser? Now is your chance to ask!

This is really useful. Thanks Court. I have been working on cross-browser issues since I found out my first theme did not work well in IE7.

You’re welcome David! It’s frustrating for me to spend time fixing cross browser issues, it just seems like they should all show something very similar. Oh well, I guess we just have to spend the time!

That’s a really nice site that you found. I will definitely try it later. I had to reformat my hd this weekend anyways.

You should give it a shot! You might find that your site doesn’t look like you think in some browsers.

yes, you are indeed right. i encountered the same thing for my theme. But didn’t know how to correct it.

What was the problem with your theme? Was it a spacing issue?

My biggest disappointment was when IE7 came out. I had my computer on auto update and install. I lost all my bookmarks in IE6 before I started using Firefox. I was pretty heated. But that is what Microsoft is there to do, make your life more miserable. haha.

That’s so irritating! I didn’t like IE7 in the beginning but I’ve learned that it’s better at showing things how they should be than IE6.

Good post Court. I didn’t realise for about a week that my site was messed up in IE6. Lesson learnt! You can get a IE plugin in for Firefox, enabling you to see what your site looks like in IE using FF. I don’t know the site but i’m sure a quick Google search will bring it up tho.

Thanks Martin! That sounds like a really cool plugin, I’ll have to look for it.

I have to say this is pretty interesting Court. I have never thought about this before. How did you find out how people were visiting your site through these different browser? Statcounter?
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
Yep! Statcounter has a browser tab that will show you how many of your visitors are using each of the browsers.

wow.. interesting, I’ve never heard of this before.. I’m going to give it a try soon.
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
You may be surprised at what your site looks like in some of the browsers!
July 2nd, 2007 at 8:19 pm
ohh.. and you just earned a stumble..
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:40 pm
We could all use those.

hi,
first nice piece.
second, i use the IE-TAB add-ons on Fire Fox and i found it solved most of my problems.
the safari and opera users are less than 0.1 % of my viewers so it doesn’t bother me as much.
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:45 am
I have ended up using Virtual PC to host an XP (I had a spare license) OS running multi-IE and Opera. This way there is no chance of any conflict with my main browsers.
Paranoid, maybe. Safe, you bet.

Good point well made, when i fist started i had an issue with my sidebar getting pushed to the bottom of my page in IE while it looked fine in FireFox. Turned out it was because my images were too wide in my posts pushing everything down!

Here’s yet another pat on the back, Court. Stuff like this is really useful even to bloggers who’ve been around for awhile.

I use my mobile, An HTC Apache
alot, It identifies as IE6, and the displays are sometimes bad,
I hate it when folks don’t check compatability, and use flash player 7 too, cause no mobile has the latest!
