Saturday Case Study - HowToMobile.com (Week 5)
July 7th, 2007 by CourtToday is HowToMobile.com’s one month anniversary (I actually wrote this on the 6th)! The site was started on June 6th of this year. This graph represents the site’s traffic over its 30 day life:
So far the site has been able to make $39.05, including $18.55 during this last week. Right now the site is monetized 100% with Google Adsense. If you missed the first 4 weeks of the case study, you can find them here: 1, 2, 3, 4.
Stats Recap
During this week, HowToMobile.com had 2,888 page loads from 1,295 unique visitors. To give you some perspective, last week the site had 2,471 page loads from 1,135 unique visitors. The traffic basically went up about 10%.
Google Adsense Revenue
The site was able to make $18.55 from Adsense clicks this last week. I’m not at all happy with the amount of clicks the site has been able to generate - watch for an entirely different layout this week. I have some other sites that are getting better click-through rates, so I’m going to switch HowToMobile to one of those layouts.
Any guesses on how much the site will make during the next 7 days?
Traffic Strategy
So far HowToMobile is surviving mostly on Google traffic. I’ve been able to find some keywords that hardly anyone is using, and that brought me traffic a lot more quickly than usual. I added quite a bit of content during this last week, which should mean a lot more traffic during this next week. Watch for a traffic spike over the next 7 days - next week’s update might be pretty interesting.
HowToMobile’s link popularity is pretty weak right now, I’m really going to hit that hard during this next week. It’s going to take a lot of quality, inbound links to make the site reach its potential. I’m pretty sure that this is the site I can hit $10,000 a month with.
I’ve been posting in some forums and blogs in order to get some direct traffic, but I’ll probably shift towards writing articles and submitting to directories this week.
Overall Thoughts At This Point
I’m really excited about the progress of the site. I can see that there’s a lot of work ahead of me, but HowToMobile will definitely be a full-time income within the next year.

I use WordTracker.com for that. The key with a good niche is low levels of competition. When you search for keywords with WordTracker you can get a good idea of how much competition you’re going to be dealing with. Here’s a WordTracker how-to from the archives:

What is your time line as far as reaching that level of income from this site? I guess I’m asking what kind of revenue increases you hope to see from week to week or month to month.
I’ve never dabbled with MFA much, is it truly that green?

I think it’s going to take about a year to get to that level. It will make money between now and then, but reaching the traffic levels I’ll need to hit $10,000 a month will still take some time, hopefully not more than 12 months.
This site isn’t exactly MFA, in fact I will be using quite a few methods of monetization eventually. It definitely takes the content route though.

Your traffic is doing really well Court, that’s Awesome. As far as submitting to directories how are going to decide which keywords you use in your anchor text? It seems like there is so many different combinations you could use. I have been trying to decide this for my own site and I have found it difficult to narrow it down. $10,000 a month for howtomobile would be sweet for you, it will be fun to watch it grow.

Thanks Mike! That’s a great question. With my home page, I’m only going to target about 5 keywords. Two of them will be keywords with limited competition, and the other three will be keywords that are really hard to get.
When I submit to directories, I’ll split evenly between the 5.
Right now I’m looking at ‘mobile phone help’, ‘cell phone help’, ‘mobile phones’, ‘mobile phone’, and ‘cell phones’.

I don’t necessarily think you’re doing something wrong, I just think HowToMobile is in a much larger niche.
The number of searches done in the mobile phone niche each day is pretty staggering.

Hi Jay!
That’s an excellent question. I use WordTracker.com to determine how much competition I’m going to be up against for a given keyword.
If a keyword has less than 20,000 competing pages in WordTracker, it will be fairly easy to target. Here’s a WordTracker lesson:
