Preparing For The Next PageRank Update
July 11th, 2007 by CourtThe next PageRank update will be… ok I don’t know exactly when it’s going to be. We can, however, get somewhat of an idea by looking at the history of updates:
- April 27, 2007
- January 25, 2007
- January 10, 2007
- September 28, 2006
- July 13, 2006
- April 4, 2006
- February 18, 2006
- December 19, 2005
- October 19, 2005
- July 14, 2005
Over the last two years Google has updated PageRank 10 times, on average once every two and a half months. As you can see by looking at the dates that the distance between PageRank updates has spread out a little in the last year. For that reason I’m predicting that the next update will happen three and a half months after the last update - August 13, 2007. It’s fun to guess the date that the update will happen, but what’s important is that you know that it could happen today. We don’t have any time to waste so let’s get to it!
What PageRank Is
In order to prepare for a PageRank update, we first need to understand what PageRank is. It was created in 1997 by Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page, while they were attending Stanford University.
Without getting too technical, let’s go over the factors that contribute positively to the PageRank of a webpage. If you look at the formula for PageRank, you will find that PageRank is 100% about links. If you don’t believe that you should read the original project paper that Sergey and Lawrence wrote in 1997. The formula shows that PageRank is calculated using:
- The number of pages linking to the page in question.
- The PageRank of the pages linking to the page in question.
- The number of links going out from the pages that are linking to the page in question.
There is a misconception that PageRank is influenced by the quality of content of a site. Content itself doesn’t influence PageRank at all, unless it influences other sites to link to it. If another site links to your valuable content, it will raise your PageRank, but valuable content in itself will not.
Increasing Your PageRank
When we think of a site’s PageRank, we think of the PageRank of their homepage. In order to be considered a PageRank 5 site, you only need to have PR5 on your homepage. In order to increase your homepage’s PageRank, there are three main things you can do:
- Increase the amount of sites that are linking to your homepage.
- Add more pages to your site.
- Decrease the amount of irrelevant sites you’re linking to with your subpages.
Increase Sites Linking To Your Homepage
There are quite a few things you can do to increase the amount of sites that are linked to your homepage. Instead of laying them all out here, let me point you towards a few articles from the archives that will show you what to do:
- 102 Ways To Make Your Site A Back-Link Superstar
- Going From PageRank Zero To PageRank Hero
- The Effective Way To Market With Articles
- An Oldie But A Goodie - Directory Listings
- Offsite Search Engine Optimization
- Do Follow, D-List, and No No-Follow
Keep in mind that links from sites that have higher PageRank will pass more PageRank to your site.
Add More Pages To Your Site
Most people don’t know that they can create more PageRank for their homepage by simply creating more pages and linking back to the homepage with them. According to the formula created by Sergey and Lawrence, each page is ‘born’ with a small amount of PageRank that it can pass on through links. More pages in your site means more pagerank for the pages that are linked to the most.
Decrease The Amount Of Irrelevant Sites You’re Linking To
Some people almost lost their minds when I first introduced this concept.
You shouldn’t be linking to all kinds of sites, and if you do you should add ‘nofollows’ to those links. I have ‘nofollows’ on my Technorati button, my Feedburner button, my Feedburner email link, and my SEOBook button. Simple math tells you that if I have 570 pages in Google’s index, adding ‘nofollows’ to each of those four links will add up to over 2,200 links that aren’t diluting my PageRank.
You have to link to relevant information to achieve high rankings, but you should save your links for the sites that have the most relevant information. For a more detailed explanation of this concept you can read this one from the archives: 3 Easy Ways To Rock The Next PageRank Update.
By focusing on these factors that contribute to your PageRank, you should easily be able to get a boost for the next update.

Court, this article is just flat out well done. I love the way you present the info. Thanks for reminding us to use the nofollow when need be. I should go back and add it to several of my outgoing links.

Is it too late in this update to go and make the changes? I always worry that links coming in and out get set in stone earlier than we might think.
July 13th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
It’s not too late until it happens! Since there is no way to know exactly when it’s going to be make the changes and hope for the best!

“Decrease The Amount Of Irrelevant Sites Your Linking To”
Instead of adding the ‘nofollow’ command, couldn’t you use the robots.txt? I forgot where I was reading that, but I still need to do something about this.
July 12th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
You could, except you would have to remove the entire page from Google’s index with that method. You probably wouldn’t always want to do that!
July 12th, 2007 at 4:13 am
Good post Court. My bet’s 3rd Aug for the PR update. What you hoping to get? I think you’ll get a 5 going off your backlinks.
Did you hear Goolge may be dropping the supplemental index name? Which will cause even more confusion among website owners not knowing if your site has supplemental pages or not, check this article out:
http://searchengineland.com/070710-090250.php
July 12th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
You’re probably going to be pretty close Martin! There’s really no way to no for sure - we all wish there was!
Yeah I heard that about the supplemental index. I personally think it’s a waste anyway because solid fundamentals will move a website out of the supplemental index and up in the rankings and those fundamentals will stay the same.

This is great reading.
I guess that explains why nothing has happened with my PR yet.
As businesstwins mentions will a robots.txt or the nofollow plugin remove this issue of linking to irrelevant sites?
July 12th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Nope, you’re going to need to manually add nofollow to the irrelevant links!
July 12th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Dang I was afraid of that.
Do you know how I can add the nofollow to the relevant places?
July 12th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Just edit your links to add this after the URL
a space
then
rel=”nofollow”

Thanks for the great article - logs of good info here.
Hey, Court, I notice that you are no longer a “do-follow” blogger but you have linked to the list as a good way to increase page rank.
Will you continue to update the D-list or are you done with it? (forgive me if you announced this on your blog somewhere and I missed it, I haven’t been here in a while)…
July 14th, 2007 at 11:24 pm
I have an issue with that, I think. There is a general feeling of badwill toward those who use the DF list, but do noit follow themselves. Just putting that out there
I think following is always a good idea and I hand moderate to keep out the trash spam and the insincere comments as well.
July 15th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Hi Angie! I personally don’t use the D-List anymore but will continue to update it for the ‘dofollowers’.
Following is a good idea for many blogs - but it’s also a bad idea for many blogs. If you got 50+ comments a day, for example, ‘following’ would severely damage your search engine rankings.
I had to make a critical choice, but in the process decided to not use commenting on D-List blogs as a tool to get links for CourtneyTuttle.com.
July 15th, 2007 at 11:20 am
Hi Anna! Yes I will continue to update the list for the ‘do-followers’.
July 15th, 2007 at 11:40 am
Nice… how often do you get around to updating it? I requested an add 6 days ago but I don’t think it is there yet…
Also, I requested a deletion of another of my blogs but the URL is still there… (was the wrong anchor text anyhow, hehe)

From my SEO point of view… PR is unless… My customers don’t know or care if it exists… And if I can constantly get my clients onto the first page for local searches with sites with no PR then indeed it is useless to me.

February 13th, 2009 at 2:49 am
I do not know if Google updates the pagerank, but I already has over 1 years with a PR4, every time Google does not put it more difficult to attract visitors to our site, Google wants all the web traffic for them, is not just be left to compete and I am trying to get by with Google Adsense.Pero really earn a pittance if you have it 5 to attract more visitors.
Greetings.

September 25th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Great posts Guys! The matter of fact is that it was thought that google does not follow no-follow links. The truth is that it does. I have tested it on several of my sites and almost all of them got really high page rank after following only no-follow links. What do you think?

I have been trying to figure out the best way to increase my self-esteem website link popularity. I have tried softwares to do the job, but it really hampered my ranking. The success lies in natural link building which is writing comments on different blogs. It is the best way I guess.
