Saturday Case Study - HowToMobile.com (Week 6)
July 14th, 2007 by CourtI can’t believe that HowToMobile.com has already been up for over five weeks. It doesn’t seem that long at all. It has now been 37 days since I started the site, and I think it’s done pretty well so far. If you have missed the first five updates, here they are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Here is the graph of the site’s traffic since it was born:

Site Stats Recapped
Between July 6 and July 12, the site received 5,536 page loads from 2,916 unique visitors. To give you some perspective, the site had 2,888 page loads from 1,295 unique visitors last week.
There was a huge increase in traffic during the last 10 days - there has also been an enormous increase in the amount of content I’ve added to the site recently.
Google Adsense Revenue
So far the site is monetized 100% by Google Adsense. This will change in the future, but when a site is brand new, there aren’t as many options. So far the site has made a total of $66.46, including $27.41 during the last week. I still think it’s pretty weak, but it is almost $4 a day already.
The site’s click-through rate was a lot better during this last week, but the clicks didn’t pay out as well. Since the clicks didn’t perform as well as I would have wanted, I was pretty happy to have an increase in revenue - even though it was pretty small.
New Revenue Streams
I have some new revenue streams planned for integration during the next few weeks with HowToMobile. I applied this week to have the site added to my Kontera account, and that should bring some immediate revenue.
The last time I asked Kontera to add a new site, it took them about a week to take care of it, so I’m not sure if the new revenue stream will be available for next week’s report or not. Either way, it will be nice to have more monetization for my traffic.
Traffic Strategy
My basic traffic strategy with HowToMobile.com is to play the numbers game. I figure that the more content I add, the more traffic I should be able to get. I’ve already added over 75 posts to the site, and a few of them are pretty long. I find it pretty interesting that the longer posts have been getting a lot more search engine hits than the shorter ones.
I’ve also been adding quite a few links during the last few weeks. I’ve used a few different methods to get links. Most of them came through article submissions, directory submissions, posting in forums with a signature link, and by using the D-List.
The numbers game here is pretty simple. I’m going to keep adding content and links like crazy.
Overall Thoughts At This Point
I’m dang excited because I know that this is going to be my $10,000 a month site. It will probably take me about a year to get there, but after that it’s going to be fun to have the easy income.
I can’t believe how much the traffic has grown so far. The Alexa ranking is sitting at about 600,000, but that Alexa uses a three month average. If they used a one week average the site would likely already be in the top 100,000. If I can multiply the traffic by 10x or so over the next six months I’ll be in really good shape.

here’s a comment. How to mobile will never reach critical mass to help anybody do anything. what’s worse, your product “helpful cell phone hints” is a wasting asset. face it, this blog is nothing more than a place to pimp your ad-space.
then again, prove me wrong.
July 14th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
I guess you’ll have to explain what a wasting asset is if you want me to tell you whether it is or isn’t.

hmmmm… baseball investor’s comment is the epitome of the pot calling the kettle black.. has anyone looked at HIS site? lol..

–Wasting asset. An asset which has a limited life and therefore decreases in value over time. How long before your “helpful hints” need to be updated. And what if your advice unwittingly causes the user a problem. But a bigger problem is that blog format is completely wrong for what your trying to do. you’re trying to be webMD for the cell phone but your set to be john Chow “look at me now”. As for runner, Baseball investor is just fine. where’s your blog, by the way.

What if your betting advice causes people to lose their money?
Who says I’m going to use a blog format? If you had read all of the updates you would know that I’m working on the structure. You’re obviously unaware of a lot of things that can be done with WordPress.
Helpful hints don’t have to be updated - each lesson is phone specific.
You’re entitled to your opinions baseballinvestor - I guess we’ll see who’s right.

Court, this is just an insane amount of traffic to have after just six weeks. I look forward having wasting assets like this to pimp my ad-space on.
Congrats on the project.
July 14th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
Haha thanks Mark! It will be sweet when I become knowledgeable enough to not create assets that are a waste.
Apparently I haven’t reached that level yet so I’ll just have to keep ‘pimpin’ my adspace.

Court, I’m impressed! I think these are great stats for being up for 5 weeks. I hope that my cell site will be near that good in the next month.
Very cool, my friend!
Keep it up - I love hearing updates about this.
July 14th, 2007 at 11:15 pm
I hope yours is at that level too! I can always use a little extra motivation to push harder. Take care Ryan you rock.

It doesn’t seem like to me that someone such as Baseball Investor has the authority to make comments such as he has. Your idea is great Court. People use old phones and new phones. Content will never need to be updated for specific phones because help tips will never change for those phones. New phones will have there own set of help tips. This guy doesn’t make much sense Court.
July 16th, 2007 at 12:16 am
It is amazing how well you’ve been doing Court. $10,000 a month for a blog would be a dream for me.
Anyway, keep it up. And I’m sorry you’re getting comments like this from Baseball Investor. He’s probably just jealous.

Wow, getting that much traffic this soon is VERY impressive. Nice work!

This case study has been one of the best things I’ve ever read as far as launching a new site. Thanks for sharing all the information. It is very impressive.

Court, thanks for posting these updates as you go along. Makes for a great learning experience. Case studies are my absolute favorite way to learn about how to do something right (other than just trying it myself!).

It has been fun reading back through the howtomobile 1-5 posts. Nice case study.
The one big thing you are missing in your stats is where the traffic is coming from?
What percent of the traffic is coming from the SEs… broken down by engine? How many of the visits are from referrals of this blog, Social Media, etc?
This is a big missing piece of the case study.
