Alexa Top 50,000 and Technorati Top 3,000

July 17th, 2007 by Court

During this last week CourtneyTuttle.com pushed through two fairly significant milestones. It cracked the Technorati Top 3,000 and also broke into Alexa’s top 50,000 sites. Technorati Top 3,000

The official ranking as of right now in Technorati is 2,985. If you look closely at the image to the left, you’ll see that the Technorati authority of CourtneyTuttle.com is 843. This means that in order to break the Technorati top 3,000, it takes links from about 840 different blogs.

Technorati calculates the rankings by the number of unique blogs that link to you. The total number of links this site has from blogs is 2,224, but that doesn’t really matter to Technorati. I could have 500,000 links and it wouldn’t improve my ranking at all if all of them were from the same 843 blogs.Alexa Top 50000

I’m really happy with my Technorati ranking, but the truth is that getting into the top 50,000 of Alexa is actually a lot more difficult than breaking the Technorati top 3,000.

Alexa calculates their rankings by using a three month average of a website’s traffic. This makes it a lot more difficult for websites and blogs that are new because low traffic numbers from April will affect your Alexa rank today.

If you look closely at the chart (sorry if it’s pretty small) you’ll see that my traffic has increased dramatically in May, June, and July. Since the ranking is still averaging the last two weeks of April my score is being held back quite a bit. I’m betting that I’ll be able to crack the top 40,000 sometime early in August.

The Alexa ranking is a very important number that is used to calculate what advertising is worth on your site. ReviewMe, PayPerPost, Text-Link-Ads, and a whole bunch of other ad players use it to gauge what you’re worth.

Tomorrow’s post is going to be on achieving a higher Alexa ranking, so make sure to come back or subscribe to my feed. If you would rather subscribe by email, there is a form in the upper right hand of the page where you can sign up that way.

That is Awesome Court! Do I dare ask how many monthly page impressions you are getting now to achieve such a good alexa ranking?

It looks like this month I’m going to hit about 30,000. Not bad for a new site but I’ll be a lot happier when it’s more like 300,000.

That’s good going Court, you clearly know what you’re doing! I recently wrote a post on whether there is any correlation between Alexa ranking and income. It was a fairly simple analaysis based on earnings as provided on Paula Mooney’s list and Alexa ranking as researched by me. Conclusion you can make reasonable money with an Alexa ranking above 100,000 but to make decent money yo need to get above 25,000 and for the really good money you need to be above 10,000 - all very approxiamte of course - but an intereting guide for beginners like myself - here it is if anyone is interested http://www.netmonetization.com/2007/07/blogger-revenue-and-alexa-rankings-are.html

That’s really cool research Vic! It looks like I’ll have to wait until 10,000 to start making the big bucks. :)

And here I was being happy that I got under 150k, and 1 mil each… All for naught anyways, I’m changing to wordpress and pro hosting in the next week or so. Get to start allllll over again :-)

I’m thinking to ‘get back in the game’ that I might have to back off of my viral linking ideology.

Thats fine with me though, blogspot gave me the opportunity to prove to myself I can do it. And I know I can do it up better with more tools at my disposal.

Congrats on your success though! Very cool, I can’t wait until I’m making one of these posts :D

Those are great numbers Jeremy! The most important thing is the direction your site is moving. I’ve seen your stats improve over the last few months which means they’ll just keep improving.

Switching to WordPress will definitely give you a lot more tools to improve with so it sounds like you’re making a very wise decision.

You will Gregg! The sad truth is that most people quit before they get to where they want to be. If you keep working at it there’s no doubt that you get there.

You already have a very useful site which is a lot more important than all the tricks and gimmicks.

Congratulations, that is good news. Also, thanks for explaining the bit about how Technorati only gives 1 authority point per site, I was wondering why my authority wasn’t going up even though I was still getting links (it was just from the same sites).

Thanks Casey! My traffic has actually grown steadily. The appeared-spike in traffic happened when I installed the Alexa widget. That simply allowed Alexa to calculate my ranking more accurately.

Congrats Court.

I have just broken the 10k club in Technorati, and have spiked into Alexa’s top 100k 3 times, but have not been able to sustain it - yet :).

That’s a great breakdown of Alexa.

I agree it comes down to how much do you want some. I’ve met a few online bloggers that want to work for themselves, but they aren’t willing to do what it takes to get there which means they will be doing exactly what they are doing now.

I started taking my personal website Vegan Momma seriously in May and my numbers have doubled every month.

I started at an almost 2m with my Alexa, and it’s now down to 79,400. I’ve made almost 2k in two months.

I was just doing it for “pocket change” and to experiment with blog monetization.

I think my heavy hitter will be my niche website I just added adsense to the site after spending the first few weeks adding lots of content.

I’ve been doing very well currently over $1 per click. The traffic is low since it’s new, but it’s increasing.
