A Simple Trick To Get Over Writer’s Block

July 19th, 2007 by Court

Everyone who writes is inevitably going to suffer from writer’s block at one point or another. What do you do when you can’t think of anything to write about? Here’s a simple trick that I use again and again: Go through your last post to scan for topics. If I scan through my last post, I can get a load of different topics to write about:

  • Alexa Ranking
  • Sponsored Reviews
  • ReviewMe
  • PayPerPost
  • Text-Link-Ads
  • Website Monetization
  • The Alexa Toolbar
  • Yahoo - #1 Site (A lot of people don’t understand why Yahoo! is the #1 site if Google is the #1 search engine)
  • Alexa Redirect Links

That gives me plenty of material that I can write about, and usually that is plenty to get me started on a post. That’s how I do it! Are there any other tricks you guys use when you have writer’s block?

I can always use techniques for overcoming writers block…

Sometimes it’s not so much the subject that stumps me as the “getting it written” part. I try to do it by making a bullet list of key points, then fill in the details.

When I have a case of writers block, it try to take my mind off of writing completely.

Forcing yourself to write will never produce meaningful content.

Instead, I go read other blogs, comment, have a chat in a discussion forum.

Within a few hours (or minutes) of doing this I generally find a subject that requires a post…

I have a similar approach at fighting writer’s block. Sometimes I do the same things as you and just surf the net. Other times I might go outside for a bit or do something else and usually something just comes to me.

Yeah, I’ve had a bit of writers block this week. Seems to hit me every couple of weeks. My thing is to just take a break, write some shorter posts to keep things going, and get reading other things for more ideas!

I often find that when I am writing an article, ideas for future posts come to mind.

I write these ideas down and save them to my blogging folder so when I am lost for inspiration I can load up the file and find a subject to write about.

Excellent trick Court. What I do is, as I’m writing a post, if another topic pops in my head, I’ll open a new window, create a new post and briefly right about the topic so that I can come back later and write a post about it.

I get writers block sometimes so I sometimes refer back to my comments for more topics.

It’s such a frustrating thing when you can’t think of what to write about, usually I find it helps if you have a break for a while then come back to it.
