Saturday Case Study - HowToMobile.com (Week 7)

July 21st, 2007 by Court

It has now been 44 days since I started HowToMobile.com. I’m very much excited about the future of the site and it has done quite well so far, considering it’s so new anyway. The site had somewhat of a traffic dip during this last week - it’s one of those things that you hope is never going to happen, but you know it’s eventually going to. :)

Here is what the site’s traffic looks like for the 44 day life of HowToMobile:

Week 7

Site Stats Recapped

Even though the traffic during this last week dropped somewhat, the site still did extremely well considering its age. Between July 13th and July 19th, the site had 4,224 page loads from 1,939 unique visitors. To give you some perspective, last week the site had 5,536 page loads from 2,916 unique visitors. This site had over 900 more unique visitors last week than it did this week. Two weeks ago the site had 2,888 page loads from 1,295 unique visitors.

When I started in this business, weaker weeks would really get me nervous. I would try to figure out what I did wrong and start tweaking all kinds of things. Experience has taught me that this just happens - Google traffic is never stable when you have a brand new site. Your rankings are going to fluctuate naturally and you just have to act like it isn’t happening. Better yet, let the drop motivate you to put more time into your project. I can guarantee that I will put more time into the project this week than I did last week. ;)

Google Adsense Revenue

During the last week the site made$18.58 from Adsense. This brings the grand total made from Adsense to $85.04. This means that the site has averaged $1.93 per day from the beginning until the present.

Kontera Revenue

During this last week, I added Kontera contextual ads to HowToMobile.com. The site was able to make $9.89 from Kontera. This means that the grand total for the week was $28.57, which was higher than last week’s earnings despite having significantly less traffic. If you’re still putting all of your eggs in the Adsense basket hopefully you can see now that it isn’t the best idea. Multiple revenue streams can help you to make a lot more money.

Traffic Strategy For HowToMobile.com

For now, I’m going to focus on adding a lot more content to the site. During this next week I plan on adding about 50 posts to the site. This should help to get the traffic going quite a bit.

Overall Thoughts At This Point

This site is still pretty new, so there is just plain a lot to do. I’m really excited about the site though, the potential is unbelievable. I still think it’s going to take about a year to get it to where I want it to be, but I think that in that time the site can get to a cool $10,000 per month.

When you post the 50+ articles, are you planning on using the approach that you outlined in your previous post about one post not being enough?

Yep! The method I’m going to use will be very much like that. :)

How much time does it take each week for you to update this blog and HowtoMobile?

It takes me about an hour a day to write most of the posts for this site, but some of them have taken more than that.

I’ve been working on HowToMobile for a few hours a day.

Hi Court,

This Case Study is really good stuff.

Just one question. You mention about multiple revenues streams and you also added Kontera to the website.

Are you planning to add other streams of income? Do you think AuctionAds will do well on this sort of website?

Cheers,
Antonio

This is probably the type of site that auctionads would do the best on. I’m considering using them, but an also considering some other options.

I don’t know if you saw my last comment from the “Week 6″ recap… but what is the source of the traffic?

A simple breakdown would be fine.

Something like:

80% from Search Engines
60 google
20 msn

10% referrals from this blog

10% other blog referrals

Hi Dorian,
Right now it’s about 90% search engine traffic, 5% referrals from this site, and 5% referrals from other sites (mostly forums).

The search engine traffic is 99.9% Google. I’ve seen a few hits from Yahoo and none from MSN. Google refers a few hundred per day.

Good luck with this site, it looks pretty nice at the moment - and is having some good traffic even though it is still young.
