A Warning To The Weekend Warriors

July 23rd, 2007 by Court

This last weekend I decided it would be very interesting to take a step back and analyze a ton of stats. Each time I do that I find some very interesting facts that help me to better my business, and this time was no exception.

I have been pretty curious to know how much of my traffic comes on each day of the week. I have known for a while that Saturdays are slower than the other days, but I really hadn’t been keeping track of the stats close enough to know exactly what percentage of my traffic comes on Mondays, Tuesdays, etc.

In order to make the research as accurate as possible, I combined the traffic figures from all of my sites over the last 12 months. Here is a pie chart that represents the traffic for each day of the week:

Traffic Graph

The traffic for Saturdays is the most noticeable - I get about half the traffic I get on most other days.

What Can We Learn From This Fact?

I think we can learn that we shouldn’t be publishing our best work on Saturdays, and we probably shouldn’t be publishing in on Fridays either. Most people that find your site will at least look at the first few posts, and if you’re publishing your best work on Friday or Saturday it isn’t going to be as visible as it would be on other days.

If we assume that a new visitor will look at the most recent two posts, easy math will tell us that there won’t be a major difference in the amount of exposure unless we publish on a Friday or Saturday. Lesson learned: Publish your best stuff on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Sunday.

For the weekend warriors, save your work until the days when it’s easier to make money online.

Those findings are close to what I’ve been experiencing. Lately I work on upcoming post on Saturdays and Sundays or do nothing at all! LOL

On some Sunday’s, I try and post a weekly roundup/speedlinking story, but not every Sunday.

It’s good to see that it’s not just me who has low visitor turn out on Saturdays.

Glad to know that I’m not the only one, too. ;) I’ve always had slow Saturdays but didn’t realize that the traffic was down that much until I ran the numbers.

This resembles my stats too. I usually have a weekend video or something of that type. I think Sunday is the same for me too….Though not this drastic a dip.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this trend also. That’s why I always save the good stuff for the beginning of the week! Which is hard because inspiration often comes on the weekend. *nod*

The weekends are for rest and relaxation, right? ;)
As hard as I find it to do, I know that it is good for me to get away from the computer for a day or two. I certainly come back with lots of new ideas.
It’s good to see your findings though. Thanks for keeping us informed!

I have noticed the same trend on my blog. I wonder if this applies to all niches, or there are others where traffic is high over the weekend.

This is great info Court. I don’t have a long enough history and probably don’t have as many readers as you do now. Do you use the timestamp tool to post your items on the weekend? I would have thought that more people have time to read on the weekend. I guess that’s what people do during work hours!

I usually find that the weekends are quite slow for me, but I don’t really think about putting up my best content on my most popular days. I might have to think about trying this out though.

The Saturday number didn’t surprise me, but Tuesday did. I always have traffic spikes on Tuesdays. Noticed that’s your ‘big day’ too, wonder what the ‘x’ factor is there.

I know! I can’t really think of a reason for that but I’ll take what I can get. :)

I’ve been noticing a trend like this for several months now. It’s one reason why I try my hardest not even to look at a computer on the weekends!

I’ve been experiencing the same scenario. The traffic to my blog dropped every weekend. I thought it was due to my lack of posting so I was planning to write more during the weekends.

After reading your conclusion, I might have to re-check my strategy again. Thank you for sharing :)
