WWW vs. Non-WWW
July 27th, 2007 by CourtIn 30 short pages my ebook shows you exactly how to set up a low-maintenance income online using free traffic from Google. You'll learn:
- How to discover keyword sets where the traffic potential is high but the competition is limited.
- How to set up quick, easy, search-engine friendly websites with no programming knowledge whatsoever.
- How to build those websites around high-paying keywords that will give you your first passive online income.
The ebook is free, but there is a catch - you have to actually download it, read it, and implement what it teaches. I'm not giving you this book for intellectual stimulation; I'm giving it to you so you can make money. Hundreds of my readers have used these principles to either create or increase their online income. You can do the same.
Just fill out the easy form below you'll be redirected to the download page. As a bonus I'll follow up with an email mini-course that outlines some of my biggest successes, failures, and key insights I've gained over the years as a full-time internet marketer. I'll send you the first installment right away. And don't worry - all you'll ever get from me is value-packed content. I'll never share, rent, or sell your personal information. Enjoy...and thanks for visiting!
Talking about the differences in going with or without the www in your domain name is always an interesting debate. Some people think that going without the www has a positive impact on rankings, especially if you have keywords in your domain name.
Other people think that it doesn’t make any difference at all. Since there isn’t any concrete evidence either way it basically comes down to reason to tell us whether it does or does not make a difference. Does anyone have any evidence that it matters?
I personally have sites that are setup both ways and I don’t think it makes any difference whatsoever. I have sites that do well in search engines that are set up with and without www in the URLs.
The Real Issue Here
In my opinion the bigger issue is when Google and other search engines can find both the www and non-www versions of your site. This can cause a major issue for your site’s rankings so this really needs to be avoided.
Be Very Careful While Link Building
If you use the non-www version of your URL, you will want to make sure that all of the links you build don’t have the www. All of the links the point to my site use http://courtneytuttle.com as the URL. If I also used http://www.courtneytuttle.com to build links to the site it would confuse the search engines.
If you already have links out there that point to both versions of your site, there are a few things that you can do to eliminate the damage. The most important thing to do is to let Google know which version you prefer to use. You do this by signing up for an account with Google Webmaster Tools and visiting the ‘Diagnostic’ section. You will then find a link called ‘Preferred Domain’ and you simply tell them whether you want to use ‘yourdomain.com’ or ‘www.yourdomain.com’.
Bonus Method For WordPress Bloggers
For WordPress bloggers there are some great plugins that will redirect the www version of your site to the non-www version. There is also a plugin that will redirect the non-www version to the www version. This is a great thing because it will redirect links of one version to the other version, so you will still get credit for the links.
If you use the non-www version as I do, use the NoWWW plugin.
If you use the www version, use the Yes-WWW plugin.
Does anyone have any concerns over this issue? I would be more than happy to answer your questions.

No concerns here. I always make sure that my sites - whether Wordpress or not - go to the non-www. The second I put up a site, I do an .htaccess redirect from www to the non.

I agree with you that it is more of a preference. The plugin for wordpress is excellent to help eliminate the potential for duplicate content.

Another great post. I’ve never really thought about the issue of having a WWW domain name, was interesting to read the importance of the domain name though.

I tried some nonwww plugin or yes-www plugin. I found some problem, if I want non-www version, the following url will redirect to :
http://www.example.com/category/post1/ –> http://example.com/
The only one I found working good is Permalink Redirect: http://fucoder.com/code/permalink-redirect/
e.g. http://www.example.com/category/post1/ –> http://example.com/category/post1/
They also take care of “/” or without “/”.

The one I gave in the lesson redirects the proper way.
It’s never bad to have options though!

You’d think that with the money that Google has in their pocket they would be able to figure out that http://www.lewisempire.com is the same as lewisempire.com! It just seems odd that they won’t fix this problem.
