Search Engine Optimization For Yahoo

August 23rd, 2007 by Court

Yahoo.com is visited each day by nearly 30% of all of the people that are on the internet. Yahoo isn’t the world’s most used search engine, but that still have a very large share of the search market, because they have the #1 website in the world. People use Yahoo to find info on sports, cars, money, and a bazillion other topics.

Many people that are trying to make money online discard Yahoo totally. However, making money with the internet is about getting traffic from as many sources as possible and Yahoo can be a legitimate source of extra traffic.

Optimizing For Yahoo

Search engine optimization for Yahoo is very much like getting ranked in Google, except for a few minor differences. I will list the ranking factors in order, the most important factors will appear at the top of the list.

  1. Inbound Links - Like most search engines, Yahoo uses inbound links to determine the importance of a page. Google pioneered this idea, but Yahoo adopted the concept. Increasing the amount of inbound links to your site can definitely help you to improve your ranking in Yahoo. The anchor text (def.) of inbound links greatly influences ranking with Yahoo.
  2. Keyword In Title Tag - If you don’t have your keyword in your HTML title tag, you can forget it with Yahoo.
  3. URL - Yahoo likes to see the keywords that are searched for in the URL of the pages they are ranking. If you blog, make sure your permalinks are set to show the post titles, and write with your keywords in your titles. If you have a traditional site, get your keywords into your filenames. One area where Yahoo is very different from Google is that they care about the amount of slashes in the URL. With Yahoo, http://sampledomain.com/folder/folder/folder/document/ won’t rank as well as http://sampledomain.com/document/. In my opinion this is one of the major factors that makes Google better than Yahoo. They realize that the ‘document’ in question is the same document, no matter how many slashes appear in the URL. Regardless, taking out the extra slashes in the URLs can help you to rank better in Yahoo.
  4. Site Age - Yahoo is a ridiculously slow search engine. They will take longer to rank your pages than any other search engine out there. This is another very significant factor that makes Google a lot better than Yahoo. Most of Yahoo’s results are at least a few months old. Older sites tend to get indexed more frequently than newer sites in Yahoo and they also rank a lot better.
  5. Keyword Use Within The Page - This is a must if you want to get ranked in Yahoo, but is at the bottom of the list because it isn’t enough by itself. Using the keyword you want to get ranked for is essential, but won’t get you ranked unless you also take care of the other factors.

Key Differences Between Yahoo And Google

  • Yahoo cares about the amount of slashes in the URL.
  • Yahoo doesn’t care much about the freshness of information, in fact old pages tend to rank better than new ones in Yahoo.
  • Yahoo doesn’t seem to care as much about the amount of links a page has within a site. With Google, you can move a page up in the search results by linking to it from more pages within your site. This doesn’t seem to help with Yahoo.
  • Yahoo doesn’t care as much about the relevance of links. In other words, getting links from sites that aren’t like yours will help you more with Yahoo than it will with Google. Getting too many links from non-relevant pages will hurt you with Google so you won’t want to overdo this.

Hey Court thanks for posting on Yahoo, I have always wondered why they are so different from google as I have 1/4 of the pages indexed in yahoo. I do have a question unrelated to this post. What are your thoughts on Text Link Ads? Is it worth signing up for and are there any negatives to signing up and using there service. Also when would you recommend to sign up as to avoid rejection?

I wouldn’t sign up until you get some PageRank, but as soon as you hit an update you can go for it!

A good article, as always. I have one thing to add to #4.

My blog is about two months old, and all of its pages are indexed by Google. About a week ago only two pages were indexed by Yahoo!

I was pinging both search engines every time I updated, and figured it would be enough. Well, with Yahoo! it was not. Then I added my blog to My Sites at SiteExplorer
and submitted its feed.

The next day one page more was indexed. Now, in a week, I have 20 pages listed. So Yahoo! may be slow, but you got to do what you can to get indexed.

Yeah that’s pretty normal with Yahoo!

Submitting your site’s feed was probably a very good idea. If I owned Yahoo I would speed up the whole process because there are times when the newest documents are the most relevant. Thanks for the insight!

Great tips Court. I’ve always focused on Google, never really bothered with getting my site listed in Yahoo - though I will now try optimise it for both search engines.

Well Google is the biggest engine! It’s wise to go after both though.

Thanks for explaining the differences. I often wondered about them. I did realize that my two-year-old website gets occasional hits from yahoo but my newer ones do not get any hardly. I think yahoo is still at #1 with Alexa because of their email, movie page, and music videos.

I have an old junk site that hasn’t been updated for over 18 months. It gets more traffic than courtneytuttle.com! That tells you quite a bit. ;)

Yahoo needs to get it together. If they did they could probably compete in the search market again.

Hey Court what’s your old junk site? I want to check it out if you don’t mind. If not that’s cool to.

Easier said than done (getting it together), since Yahoo and everyone else is so far behind. Also, Google seems to employee the smartest in the biz and everyone wants to work there, so its hard to compete with that.

All I hear is Google, Google, Google… sometimes I think we all forget there are other engines out there. I use yahoo a lot at work for searching.

Great article. I have been having major problems with Yahoo. I was actually ranked on page 3 for the keyword term “green business”, BUT when I clicked the link to my site, I received the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: iconv() in /home/content/c/a/n/canadianmale/html/traffic/Php/log_function.php on line 412

This only happens with Yahoo, no other search engine gives me this grief.I have contacted my host - they said it was Yahoo’s error. I contacted yahoo - they said that they analyzed my site and said it was my host’s error. My site works on all other search engines BUT not at yahoo. do you or any other reader have any suggestions.
thanks
Rob

Great post, Court. It’s important for us bloggers and make-money-onliners to remember that Google isn’t the only search engine out there. Keep up the great work. ;)
