Miscellaneous Site News And Ramblings For 8/28/2007 (As If You Don’t Know The Date!)
August 28th, 2007 by CourtComment Champs Change
Earlier today I changed the top commentators section in my sidebar so that it resets once per week. I wanted to open it up so that everyone would have more of a shot at getting listed there. By the end of each month, it takes quite a few comments to make the list. Now it will be a lot easier.
I currently have 690 pages in Google’s index, and the comment champs get a link from all 690 pages. Also, I decided that I don’t care if you want to use your keywords as your name. Getting on the comment champs list with your keyword will certainly give you a boost in the rankings for that keyword.
Posts Shown Change
Earlier this week I changed the amount of posts that are shown on the homepage from 5 to 3. I did this because the homepage loaded too slowly for my taste. I also had almost 200 links coming from the homepage, and that was too many. Even with only 3 posts showing I have about 120 links on the homepage. That’s about as many as you want to have.
Google Adsense Update
Google Adsense just added a new feature that should add some protection and security to your Adsense account. With the new feature, you can choose which sites you want to show an ad on when you set it up. In other words, if I create an ad for this site, I can tell Google that I only want it to show up on CourtneyTuttle.com.
This prevents bad people from putting your ads on a spam site to get your account banned. It’s pretty sad that it’s possible to get another person’s site in trouble, but I know people that swear it’s happened to them.

Ah man!!! You changed the top comentators. Ha just kidding that’s cool court, i don’t mind. I will still read your site everyday. Now you say you don’t want more than 120 links on your homepage is that total links, internal and external? Is that purpose of not having to many because it spreads your link authority to thin, meaning you will not rank as well?
August 28th, 2007 at 7:10 pm
I don’t think you need to worry about it anyway, you’ll stay on it!
The link issue really is about what Google says in their quality guidelines, where they actually say to keep the total links on the page to about 100. I haven’t ever noticed a ranking difference though, even when I had 200. I’m just doing it because they say so.

Alright sounds good I will have to do that also then. I did fill out the contact form through your local internet marketing link in your footer. When you have a chance if you could get back to me on the message I left in there that would be awesome. Thanks Court!

Also sweet logo, I just saw it. Did you pay for it or design it yourself?

I paid for it! I’m the worst designer ever lol.

I doubt your the worst designer ever I think your site looks pretty sweet and I know you didnt pay for it, right?

I have found that getting on the “Top Commentators” list is better than commenting on blogs that have “do follow.” Or at least you get more instant results. I always get an extra authority bump on technorati when I’m on someone’s TC-list, but never when I comment on someone who “follows.” The only bad thing about being on the TC-list is that it’s only temporary (unless you are a faithful commentator). Check out this blog that has a list of users that have the TC-widget. It is kinda like your D-list page.

Very true tallfreak! Sometimes it can take months for the dofollow links to show up in Technorati. Top commentator links show up as soon as the blog creates a new post!

It’s a shame to see that you have reset the Top Commentators section
Just kidding, its a good thing really, I would much prefer a blog which resets every week or so - this way it is a lot fairer all round.
It’s nice that you keep your readers up to date with any changes you make to your blog, and how you are honest about it too.

Haha I know, you and Mike got hosed! You guys comment enough to still make the list though.
August 31st, 2007 at 5:42 pm
lol, thanks for that :p I enjoy reading your posts and find them very interesting, so I think of the link-backs to be a bonus

What’s an easy way to check how many links are on each page?
August 29th, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Yep! The bad neighborhood link checker does that:
