Starting A 25 Site Media Company For $10 Per Month
September 18th, 2007 by CourtTo me, internet marketing is about leverage. In order to make money online, you have to make the best use of your time and money. Spending a fortune to get an online business going isn’t an option for most people. One day while I was looking at some domains, I had an original idea that I thought could really help some of you that are on a tight budget.
Starting Your Own Media Company
Some of you know that I use ProudDomains.com to buy domain names and for my hosting. When I was looking through some of the features of my Proud Domains hosting account, I realized that it would be really easy to start a 25 site media company using the features I already pay for. Total monthly cost: $10 for the deluxe hosting account.
The deluxe hosting account gives you access to 25 databases and unlimited subdomains. This means you could set up 25 blogs in different subdomains for only $10 per month.
Yahoo’s Media Company
Yahoo.com is very much like the media company that can be started for $10 per month. The have quite a few informational sites that are all set up in subdomains. Here are a few examples of Yahoo sub-sites that are really popular:
Using this model, you can easily create multiple sites without spending a lot of money for startup.
It’s Easy To Set Up In The Control Panel
In the Proud Domains hosting control panel, it’s pretty easy to set up a blog in a subdomain. Here’s the step by step:
- Go to ‘Settings’ and the ‘Domain Management’.
- Click ‘Add Subdomain’.
- Give the subdomain a name and click save. (You want to name the subdomain according to what that sub-site is going to be about. If it’s going to be about finance you will want to use ‘finance’.)
- The subdomain you have created will now appear as a folder on your hosting server. If you used ‘finance’, the files or blog you place in that folder will appear as finance.yoursite.com.
- Now that you have created the subdomain, you can either create a website from scratch in the subdomain, or you can install a blog. My ‘Starting A Blog‘ article shows you how to install a WordPress blog on a Proud Domains hosting account.
Make Money Online With Your Media Company
Once you follow the above steps 25 times, you will have a full blown media company. Your sites would appear on the internet like this:
- finance.yoursite.com
- health.yoursite.com
- news.yoursite.com
- celebrities.yoursite.com
- therestofyoursites.yoursite.com
You can use each site to make money for you. Here are some of the free programs that you can use to make money with your company:

Do the subdomains function as a completley different website when signing up for places such as payperpost and sponsored reviews?
September 18th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
They do! I see PayPerPost as being the easiest avenue to make money with this method. All monetization methods apply, but PPP would be pretty easy to do with these sites.
September 18th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
Heh, I’m thinking of doing just that. Ok, maybe not 25 sites but several under one domain.
I get unlimited databases & subdomains @ http://www.aushost.biz.

The idea is really nice and I am actually doing this very thing and it works just fine.
However if you sign up with Hostgator for the same $10/month you’ll have unlimited databases instead of “just” 25. But then again, 25 should be more than sufficient.

I don’t get it. So, you have a bunch of subdomains…you still need content and lots of it.
Most people with jobs have trouble coming up with content for one site. You can’t just slap Adsense or anything else up without content.
Are you trying to show how to save money by not having to buy a new domain for each site if you want more than one?
September 18th, 2007 at 5:35 pm
I agree that content is hard for some people, but it isn’t that hard for everyone. If you write about stuff you already know about, it makes it a lot easier.
If you start a blog, you should be able to write a 200 word post in less than ten minutes. In one hour’s time, you could write six posts.
Once you have a site that turns a profit, you can have someone else write the content. As soon as that happens, it will free up your time to take on more projects.

Hey Court, I submitted my first article to Article Marketer today. I think it is going to be pretty awesome. I was wondering you you display your links in the plain text about the author box. It does require that both are filled out.

Yeah, I just put the URL at the end:

Interesting idea, but multiple subdomains could be a real PIA when you want/need to add a new plugin or make some other change to all of your blogs…

Great stuff, as usual! How does the sub domain effect SEO? More specifically, Does the two click from home page get effected with a sub domain? Thanks again for all your knowledge.

I stumbled across this post a while back, and have bought a domain with godaddy, forwarded it to prouddomains.com, and have started setting up the subdomains. Only 10 so far, based on important keywords in the general niche im targeting.
There was a comment earlier that it could be a pain to set up, but apart from a more cumbersome way to setup subdomains, but since there are seperate mysql databases it is not that bad. The clever thing (at least I think so) was to create a custom wordpress theme, and worked on a single subdomain, setting it up JUST right…
Then, its a simple matter of creating the mysql database, create the subdomain, set up the forwarding on godaddy.com, upload the wordpress template I created from the first subdomain, and then upload.
Its actually quite simple. The rest is just customizing in the wordpress admin, which is a breezy 3 minutes once you’ve done it a few times.
Lets see if it starts earning its rent, but I expect it will.
There are a few things I’ve done to interlink, but I will write about that in a full post on my site. Thanks for the idea/tip!

I thought I read some where that Google is changing how they rank subdomains. Will the change have a negative impact on this strategy?

Great post. I think I will have to get started with this. I’m thinking of using my name as the main domain, then branching the subdomains to some of the categories you mentioned.
