2 Options For Google To Legitimize PageRank
September 26th, 2007 by Court
Sorry Google, I think you’re a good company but PageRank is a ridiculous joke. The way I see it there are only two things Google can do to reverse the ridiculousness of PageRank:
- Make PageRank update in real time. It has been over five months since the last update. If you want PageRank to be the standard by which sites are judged, why do we have to wait for months in between updates? Until it is at least updated once per month it will continue to be a joke in my mind.
- Throw it out altogether. Seriously, if you can’t come up with a system that makes it update in real-time, why not show some responsibility and get rid of it? Awesome sites get hosed out of money they deserve because Google simply doesn’t pull the trigger. Throwing it out altogether would make it so that sites could make money based on the traffic they’re already getting. I know that PageRank is a valuable part of Google’s algorithm. Showing everyone what the PageRank of sites was five months ago isn’t.
I’m sure that Google thinks that it isn’t their problem. I’m sure they think that it’s not their fault that sites like PayPerPost.com, ReviewMe.com, and Text-Link-Ads.com use PageRank to decide how much to pay people. Guess what Google guys? It is your fault so make it usable or throw it out.

Hey Court,
I agree with you completely. I’m pretty new to the blog scene, but I think that one company shouldn’t be able to control so much. One company shouldn’t be the authority on how important a page is. I like the way Technorati and Alexa “grade” us instead. They’re transparent (actual numbers of visitors or actual links), with no hidden tricks. They’re not arbitrary, and they’re in real time.
I think bloggers should complain to sites like TextLink Ads, PayPerPost, and others, though. If they stop putting Google on such a ridiculous pedestal, people will continue to use Google as the authority, no matter how arbitrary it is.
Oh, and maybe a system like ebay, where users grade the blog somehow…but that might invite flamers to disparage sites. Anyway, I wonder what other solutions there are.

Hi Theda! I just sent you an email! You are absolutely right about that - I’m tired of PageRank being the ultimate goal when it’s a joke.

Great post Court! Couldn’t have said it better myself.
September 26th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
Haha thanks Liz! You know that I complain about it non-stop.

ps: nice alt tag btw… LOL
September 26th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that.
September 26th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Well in reality pagerank is updated in real time, you just can’t see it. The reason Google doesn’t update the pagerank that we see in real time is due to the risk of someone reverse engineering the algorithm (which they obviously don’t want because it could lead to a flood of other systems like pagerank and also a flood of search engines which use that system, which would mean more competition). One point I agree with is that they should update more often, the 3 month mark which is usually the time it takes seems good. 5 months is another story, hopefully they can update it soon.

Good points Webd360. Matt Cutts has hinted that Google will eventually export PageRank in real-time.
Of course, there are also people that believe they will stop exporting PageRank altogether.

Do you have any alternative ideas if google were to throw out pagerank? I know I have been waiting for the pagerank update and it is just not happening. This can be very frustrating for everyone. With you experience how many yahoo backlinks does it take to hit a pagerank of 4 or 5?
September 26th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
I would like to see them come up with something where you have to prove your traffic level.
There isn’t really a way to say how many Yahoo backlinks equate to certain PR levels.
One link from a PR9 site might give you a PR6, and it might take 100,000 PR1 links to get a PR5. It comes down to the PR of the pages you’re getting links from.
September 26th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
That would be good. So If I have several links from PR6 sites i should be in fairly good shape then right?
September 27th, 2007 at 11:23 am
You’ll definitely get something! Hopefully you are able to get at least a 4, unfortunately timing can affect you somewhat! I think you’ll get a pretty good rank though.

I have a tradition site and have during this year introduced a business blog to try to promote my site.
Although I have done some good work to increase the number of relative high rank links to my site, I had not seen any difference in my page ranking.
Obviously from your post and the comments I can now understand that the lack of change is because it has been so long since Google did its update.
Thanks for the info, I can relax and hopefully wait patiently!!!

That’s right on James! Google hasn’t updated toolbar PageRank since April. Hopefully it happens again before too long.

Hey Court, I just felt like we had talked about this. I was telling my wife this morning just how frustrating it is to wait for the page rank and how much it hurts new websites.
Right now I am getting about 6000 unique hits a day and about 12500 page views a day, but yet I cant sell advertising at the price that my traffic reflects because I have a PR0, since my site started July 17 07 so it was after the last update.
Theda K. Alexa is a joke, Alexa only counts people with the tool bar installed, most people do not have Alexa installed so my site which is general interest has about 85% avg Joe’s that are not interested in Alexa and Blogging, so right now my Alexa rank is 223,273 yet I know of a site that has maybe 1/10 of my traffic and his Alexa is below 65000.
The sad part is, I will be able to use PPP on October 17 my 90 day wait period will be over, the guy who has 300 people coming to his site daily with the Alexa tool bar installed will get paid more money than me, who has a site that has had 500,000 page views in less than three months, does that make any sense?
It was great to know Court, that I am not the only one frustrated, lets hope we can catch a break and this thing gets done in the next few weeks.

Hi Vic! Man, you’re definitely right about that. This kills new websites. There is such a huge need for a ranking system that actually works. Unfortunately there isn’t any such system.
September 27th, 2007 at 11:45 am
That is amazing traffic Vic, good work. Where does most of your traffic come from? Search engines, social sites, etc… I am just curious cause you are doing something right.
September 26th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
Although I agree with you in regard to GooglePR’s ridiculousness, you as an Internet Marketer should know that you have to play by the giant’s rules. Complaining about it really isn’t going to do any good, Google’s too big. So figure out how to use it to your advantage…. Play the game.
September 27th, 2007 at 11:32 am
Hi Jt! I do an will continue to play by Google’s rules and I’ll keep complaining about them. It’s too fun not too.
September 27th, 2007 at 7:26 am
I don’t have a problem with PageRank per se, it is Googles implementation of PageRank that makes it such a miserable piece of s***. Google knows how much their PageRank is relied upon so I think it behooves them to take care of their customers and end users by putting out relevant and up to date information. It’s a shame they’ve gotten to the point where they are so big that they think they can do whatever they damn well please.
September 27th, 2007 at 11:35 am
That’s what makes me crazy too! They know that a lot of people rely on it. What did they think was going to happen?
If they were responsible with that power they would make it as efficient as possible.
September 27th, 2007 at 8:32 am
I agree completely. I started my main blog 8 months ago and still have no PR since I didn´t have a clue what I was doing those first 3 months. Now, I´m getting frustrated because I feel that I have built up a decent blog, but can´t get any decent paying posting gigs.
Hopefully, Google will update shortly. I´m working hard on my backlinks to make sure I´m pretty high up when they finally do update.
September 27th, 2007 at 11:37 am
Hey Genesis! I started my blog about 7 months ago so I’m suffering the same fate (lower PR than I should have). I’m just lucky that I knew how to get some in a hurry, otherwise I would still have a 0.
Here’s to hoping that they do something soon.

Defiantly painful for those of us who have started within the past 5 months

Motorola RAZR Skins, it is funny the day I talk about my traffic, it dies LOL.
Yesterday:
4563 Unique hits
11,258 Page Views
Google 3352
Yahoo 259
Technorati 458
MSN 25
Rest 469
But today is already over yesterdays numbers.
On a side note, I have been in BH for more than 8 years and this is my first WH venture (just got tired of the same thing every day, create site last 3 days, lose site, start again) and the only site, I really come and read is Court, most of the sites that newbies visit are jokes, people talking about how to make money on sites and how to bring traffic and there own site has neither is laughable.
But even though I have never met Court, he writes with experience and no hype just how it is, en that earned my respect.
Not only Court is the only person I recommend to read but it is probably the only person I would consider a joint venture with. So for those new to this thing consider your selfs lucky that Court does what he does. And remember to sponsor him
if you know what I am talking about.
Also I had not taken the time, but Court thanks for The News Room, I had never heard of them till you talked about it, the pay out is low but for a general interest site with high traffic it becomes a really good bonus income.
September 27th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Thanks Vic! Having you in my BlogRush down-line will help a ton!
The News Room seems like a perfect fit for a site like yours! I hope that it continues to work out well for you.
Thanks for all your kinds words. I really do try to help as much as I can!

I am very impressed with your traffic levels Vic in such a short period of time. I would love to find out what areas you you focus on that you feel helps to grow your traffic levels the most.
I have personally known Court for several years and he is a great guy. I agree with you that he provides better information than any other website out there. I read all the sites belonging to the A-listers and I personally prefer to read Court’s site over all of them.

hi Court,
sorry i don’t agree with you on this one. IMO this recent update take longer time because i believe this is major one. this new update set up a new era of google algorithm. so they need time to get their new philosophy translate into their algorithm. they need time to get the calculation done on billion of pages which dependent to one another.
in my understanding PR is updated in real time. so SERP ranking are based this PR not on the toolbar. it is waste of resources to updated page rank on toolbar every time when it might affected very low percentage of website. 0.1 PR is still 0. 0.9 is still 0. 0.99 is still 0. sometime it could take 6 month to 1 year to get PR 1. i think google is the biggest and fastest calculator of all so they can calculate what is the average time for site to increase PR one notch. so maybe 3 month is the average.
