It kind of just depends on what you're going for. With a banner, you're able to give a graphic, so it's 1000 times better for branding. Most blogs and companies that advertise with banner ads are establishing their brands. Think of 'Super Affiliate Zac Johnson'. He has his super affiliate banners all over the place. I've never clicked on one anywhere, but became familiar with his name through those banners. Now I'm a subscribed reader to his site - even though I've never clicked on those banners.
