Blogging Zoom Day One Recap

November 2nd, 2007 by Court

As you can imagine yesterday was a pretty busy day for me and Vic. The first day was a huge success and in case anyone hasn’t noticed, there are a load of people who are already using the service. That’s only going to grow, in fact it grew quite a bit during the night while we were both asleep. Here are some of the highlights of BZ’s first day:

  • We had 1,485 unique visitors and 8,472 page views. Interesting factoid: Today we’ve already had about 500 unique visitors and 3,200 page views (it’s currently 10:12 a.m.) so it’s looking like we’ll at least double yesterday’s traffic. A lot of this traffic is already search engine traffic, which we knew it would be. These numbers aren’t even 1/100th of what we will be able to do within the next few weeks.
  • We increased indexed pages from 48 to 717. This is unheard of and to tell you the truth I don’t know if I believed that it was possible before I met Vic. This is huge for Blogging Zoom and goes to show that our plan to bring a huge chunk of search traffic is right on schedule.
  • Asktheadmin.com won the day with 10 zooms. The article ‘Attention Webmasters - Do you socialize? Want to make it easier?‘ Two posts from today already have over 10 zooms so we’re definitely going to have a new all-time record holder.

Reviews Of Blogging Zoom

We have already had people giving back to Blogging Zoom through reviews. The most significant review/post we’ve picked up so far was on CashQuests.com - Blogging Zoom Has Increased My Traffic. That review really helped us out, and it will also help CashQuests. I linked back to the review, as I have done with all the reviews I’ve found. Also, some people will sign up for the service because of that review, and that will cause more and more people to sign up. That will bring more traffic right back to CashQuests. If you guys will help BZ to grow by linking to it and reviewing for your readers, I can promise you that you will get back much more than you give.

If you have linked to and reviewed BZ, please let me know. I’ve been linking to everyone that does it and will continue to do so. Update, here are the reviews I’ve found today:

Blogging Zoom WordPress Plugin

Vic put together a WordPress plugin that shows a ‘zoom’ button within WordPress posts. You can get the BZ WordPress plugin here. We owe Justin from Blendworx our thanks for creating a button that looks much better than the original. Justin has been very helpful and supportive of BZ - thanks Justin!

350 Character Minimum Requirement

Mid-day yesterday we decided to make a change that pretty much forces you to create a description that uses at least 350 characters. I wanted to clarify why we want to do that. 350 characters gives us enough material to get your content ranked in Google and other search engines. From the submissions I saw before we made the change, I would say that at least 75% of them were one line descriptions that would never rank well for you.

The above chunk of content is 434 characters.

As you know, this service is about getting your content ranked and getting you burst traffic in a Digg-like environment. If we wanted to be Digg we wouldn’t have those requirements, but we would rather have content from you that we can get ranked. Even though it will take an extra minute or so of your time, it will ensure that BZ works for the entire community.

Feedback Please!

If you have found any bugs in the system, we are going to open up the comments of this post to address them. Any help you can give us will be huge - we want to make the system as good as possible. How do you guys like the service so far?

Wow. 350 characters is actually a lot! I got the error message two times before I finally had enough words and charachters.

Bruce I did the math to get the best possible outcome with Google’s algorithm 350 was the minimum.

Trust me this is in your benefit. Yesterday I had 152 referrals from my submissions some people only got a few.

My submissions are optimized for Google, once people understand how to make a proper teaser this will be huge.

It’s true. I got more visitors from the one with the bigger teaser. That’s what I reported in my review this morning.

The 350 characters could be shown like the summary. That would had help me this morning to get the number for the review. Add it when your have a minute. I added a few things to make it better in my review.

Continue the good job guys!

I am having trouble getting my post accepted. I keep getting an error message. You say 350 words but the box your texts appears in only counts to 250 then stops. I see the other comment above, so do I just keep going?

Can’t wait to get posted. Thanks for this wonderful tool

Well I am on a lunch break, so thought I would drop by for a post. Thanks for the props Court. I hope to work with the logos a bit more and see what interesting thing can be made of it to look more unique.

I will just relay what I have gained thus far from BZ on a personal level in my post tonight. But from a quick glance it looks like I have gained about 150 more visitors from BZ than I normally would.

Just think everyone, at only 1 day and seeing results, I can only imagine a week or even a month from now. Lets keep the support rolling in guys. Zoom articles you find anywhere that are good blogs. Im sure people will actually see a difference and realize this is no joke at all.

Sorry, but the 350 characters is a deal breaker. What you’re asking is that I optimize pages on your site to rank for the same keywords that my article is targeting. Now, why would I do that?

Digg managed to rank well in the search engines from the beginning without measures like this.

Search Engine Optimized User Generated Content? You’re getting greedy.

No offense guys, I love the site and I’d love to use it. But if I’m targeting some keywords with my article, I’m not going to help you outrank me.

Hi Alexandru. I appreciate your honesty. The truth however is that we’re not getting greedy at all. One of the two main functions of Blogging Zoom is to help people to get ranked in locations they can’t achieve on their own.

What’s the point if every post submitted gets ranked on page 200 of Google because there isn’t enough content there?

Blogging Zoom is here to help people to get rankings they can’t get on their own. If you think you can get the rankings and traffic you need on your own then maybe you don’t need to use the service.

Are you aware that we pushed over 100 referrals to more than one person on our first day online? Judging by your last post, which included your traffic stats, I can tell you that if it would have been you it would have increased your traffic by more than 50% yesterday alone. You said that you got 470 visitors from search engines last month? We had people get over 100 search engine visitors to their sites on our first day Alexandru. You’re saying that it’s a bad idea because they have to make one extra click to get to your site?

You want to cripple the main thing that we can do to help people to get traffic, which is to get their content ranked. We’re getting greedy?

Sorry Court, didn’t see your reply, just Vic’s.

You’re making the mistake of assuming that Shylock Blogging is my main blog. It isn’t. I started a new blog a few days ago and I have about 20.000 uniques in this time already. Traffic can be easy sometimes.

I’m sorry, but the idea that you’re helping people get ranked by ranking instead of them doesn’t fly too well. I got all the respect for you and I’m a long time subscriber, but you’ll have to accept that not everyone is thrilled when they see Digg ranking higher then their article that made the front page. If you put it like this, Digg does the same thing, helps people get ranking by doing it instead of them.

And I still think the 350 character minimum isn’t needed. What if a blogger has a simple post with a very cool photo and no text in it. Why should he need to write 350 characters describing a picture when he could just say “Look at this cool pic”. That guy would actually have less text on his post then on Blogging Zoom.

Anyway, enough is enough. I’ve said my opinion on this. No point in getting into a fight about it. Have a nice day and good luck with Blogging Zoom. It has huge potential.

Vic, honestly, you have no idea what you’re talking about again. Dreamhost can’t take 20k visitors in one hour, that’s true. But what I said, is that in the few days since I started that blog I got 20k uniques. As far as I know that doesn’t mean 20k in a single day, but total in 2-3 days since I started it. And I wasn’t talking about search engine traffic, so no idea about what algorithm you’re talking about.

And sorry, unlike you I feel no need to stroke my family jewels in public. What I earn online and the stats from my other sites are private. If you don’t like that, go tell Darren Rowse that he’s a liar because he doesn’t reveal his stats. And I got 4 hosting accounts total + a dedicated server coming in January, not just the Dreamhost one.

And … watch who you’re calling kid mate. You seem a bit too childish to be pointing fingers.

When you’re talking with other people that are making money online it might be a good idea not to act like an ebook guru. 300k uniques in one month doesn’t make you special. Sorry ;)

Alexandru I understand your position but this is the reality and my intention is not to be mean just talking straight.

Alexandru I just checked your page you have no chance in hell to out rank anybody in any keyword. Period!!

The basis of Blogging Zoom is actually to help people like you.

Because of the mass content submission Google bot will be coming back and forth all day.

Because we are not Digg our post have content I help with code to get authority and better ranking.

This gives you a chance to rank with a keyword you would never have a chance in hell to rank.

Again not to be mean just facts.

Your main keyword selection is “make money blogging”

You are on page four of Google for all mass traffic purposes you are in limbo in no mans land.

Now again to prove my point that you have no idea what are you talking about.

Not one Digg post is in the first Four pages, again NOT ONE!

No Digg does not rank well they have mass traffic because of the base they have built.

We are not Digg and do not want to be Digg.

We do not want to send you 900 people and than get 0. We want to get you 100 today and get you everyday 10 visitors a day for the life of that post which it would be hopefully for ever.

Now Alexandru please explain why Digg does not rank well in Googles algorithm or even easier explain the algorithm to me.

My point friend is we want to help everybody in a collective manner. We want to be the bloggers against the rest.

But we can not help those that do not want the help.

If I had some one who will have this month over 300k unique hits on his page trying to help me, I would listen.

This is who I am:

Bu.bulicio.us last month

218484 Unique Hits
575951 Page Views

And this is a blog with only 90 days.

Alexandru I do not talk about what I think I talk with what I know.

I invite you to use the service and in 30 days we continue this chat and we will see who is right ;)

Come and join us buddy we are here to help you even if right now you do not have the knowledge to know that this is what we are doing.

Ohh, Vic, mate, don’t tempt me to rip you a new one. With what you just said, you convinced me that you know less then I do. If you want to impress me build in 3 months a blog about making money online with 300k visitors per month. That would be cool to see.

And if you really care about Blogging Zoom (and it does have huge potential with Court’s backing), get down from that high horse where you’re so proudly standing and cut the crap. It’s normal that you want for Blogging Zoom to grow and make money of it. Love the idea, love what you’ve done with it, it’s normal that you want for it to rank.

But if a small blog writes an article about ugly small dogs, posts on Blogging Zoom, and then you’re higher then him for the keywords ugly small dogs, then that means you’re stealing traffic from him, not giving.

Ahh, you might want to stop spamming Blogging Zoom with those mortage type articles. It doesn’t look good when you’re spamming your own site.

Hey Alexandru, let me address some of your concerns so that we’re clear.

That’s a good example that you used with ugly small dogs, it will help me to illustrate the whole point of BZ. Let’s say a small site gets ranked at #19 for ugly small dogs. They may get 2 visitors per day from that keyword at position 19.

We can take their title and description and get it ranked at say #3. Now they get say 25 people per day to their BZ page, and 13 people to their site.

Yeah, we rank higher than them, but does that help them or hurt them? They actually will probably still get their 2 people at position 20 and 13 more from us. Does that give you a better idea of what we’re trying to do?

I’ve replied to your previous comment. Didn’t see it the first time.

I get what you’re saying Court. I’ve understood from the beginning. That argument can be used just as well with Digg, since they have huge authority and better chances to rank.

IMHO I don’t think that it’s a good idea to tell webmasters “Come to our site, submit your content and optimize it, so we can rank on the first page and send some of that traffic your way.”

But I’m guessing we’ll both remain on the same position as before so no point arguing :)

Best of luck, again.

After this month is over which I have to dedicate my full time to BZ I would be willing to take you on.

This would be it: we both deposit 10k in an escrow account we both buy brand new domains and both focus on the keywords “making money online”

At the end of the 30 days who ever has more unique hits takes home the 20k

If you are willing to do this just contact me at my Skype which is bu.bulicio.us so we can share our attorneys to draft a legal agreement both agreeing to the terms.

Well, you don’t, but that doesn’t mean I’m such a moron that I would bet 10k with a guy I had an argument over the Internet. And no you freakin kid, I didn’t make 8k last month from all my sites. See, I can admit that. Can you admit anything or should I just wait for you to finish the ego trip?

See, all this scandal because you’re not capable of a normal conversation or taking critics. How do you expect to run Blogging Zoom anyway? You have any idea how many opinionated bloggers you’ll piss off at one time or another?

PS: I still think you don’t have a clue. I do believe you worked your ass off to bring that blog to 300k and all my respect for that. But dude, you got a lot to learn about public relations when it comes to Blogging Zoom. Taking the “I’m superior and I know more because I made 8k” is really kiddy stuff. There are way too many guys out there that can put that to shame.

Going to bed soon. Don’t have a stroke if I don’t reply immediately.

I could use more info on how the 350 word summary works to drive traffic.

Unlike most of the blogs I’ve seen on here so far, I write humor and I might be better off putting in the first 350 words of the article, as I try to start things off with a band. That would encourage people to click the link and zoom it, hopefully.

If the summary should be different, what should I be emphasizing there?

Thanks for your help!

Anne actually you have a really good one.

the problem is that one of Googles filters is called the duplicate content filter.

Now the way this works it penalizes if you have the same content on different pages the person that gets the penalty is the lower ranking site.

The algorithm thinks that if you have more authority by definition you are the original creator of course this is not true sometimes.

No remember it is not 350 words it is 350 characters.

Could you make a small 350 character teaser post funny about your funny article?

But out of the comments about the 350 rule this one does present an interesting point

Hi Anne! Thanks for a great question - know that we’re always here to help you to be as successful as possible with BZ.

I think you’ll do very well with humor in BZ. I’ve been to your site several times myself already. :) We have more than one way to bring you traffic, and you be exceptional at the ‘zoom’ end of things.

The humorous posts that will get you the most search traffic will be posts that talk about things people already search for, like celebrities, etc. Poking fun at something that happened on television one night would likely draw some search visitors the next day.

Now, in order for us to get your content ranked in Google, the 350 characters comes in. 350 characters is actually only about 50 words.

You have a great thing going because you will probably get traffic from zoomers. Search traffic may be slightly more challenging for your regular posts, but your posts about people and other things searched for will do great.

I swear my intention is not to get on the “I AM SO GOOD BAND WAGON” but the facts are what they are.

And I know some kid just starting his blog might read his idiotic post and this may cause him to lose an opportunity to gain traffic to his brand new site.

I back up everything I say. And when things do not work for me I am the first to say it.

People love to talk but at the end of the day when they have to do the walk, you will start reading how come they can not or do not want to do that.

Blogging Zoom has just incredible potential to drive organic traffic to small to medium bloggers but we all have to get together and decided to work together to get this done.

AskTheAdmin, I’m not attacking Blogging Zoom, Court or Vic. I’ve said already that I think it’s a great idea with great potential and that I think it’s normal that they make money out of it. I have huge respect for Court and I’d really like to apologize for the fight with Vic in his comments.

Vic, honestly I’ve had enough of this fight. I’ll stop commenting on this blog from now on and I’ll post a review of Blogging Zoom tomorrow. A honest review, not looking to attack the site, you or Court. Just what I think about its future.

The entire argument from my point of view started because you acted all superior with your 300k uniques, when there was no need for that. I just pointed to what I thought was a flaw in your strategy, the minimum 350 characters. You shouldn’t judge people by the blogs they have in their signatures. Attacking someone and acting superior judging just by what you can see on the surface usually isn’t a good idea.

I also have no idea who you are or what you’re capable off. So, because I love Blogging Zoom and I respect Court, I apologize for everything I said. I should’ve kept my mouth shut, like I did so many times before. I guess blogging and saying your opinion is overrated.

Best of luck with Blogging Zoom to both of you.

Out of respect for Court I’ll stop replying here from now on. If you’re interested in my opinion on your new project, it will be on the blog about 12-16 hours from now.

This is so funny how I write a post about watching your comments. I think its good for some people to just respect what was created for their benefit. I know Vic and Court want everyone to win on this one. I know Vic would love to prove his point and He would.

But from a guy with less experience, I think Vic and Courts points should be proven from a third party like myself.

So with that in mind lets just really see how much my traffic really grows. I will be giving a report now and each week following. I work for a hosting company so I do have a bit of knowledge on some things and others. I don’t claim to know it all but from what I have seen already I am willing to bet my butt that the value of this tool far outweighs battling to get on the first page of google for certain keywords that could take years.

This whole thing is about people getting traffic now, not in a year from now. So lets be positive about it. Don’t judge the makers until you have tested it for yourself to the limit.

Positive, positive!! Theres too much negative the way it is.
Thats my 13 cents.

I agree with someone above. Most of the bloggers and submitted blogs I’ve seen so far are monetizers, not traffickers.

I think if your blog is not about some aspect of blogging, like mine, to benefit from this service you must figure out how to get zoomed, and I will be looking for hints on that.

Thanks,

Hi Anne,

When we created Blogging Zoom we had a two fold mentality.

One: Burst Traffic
Two: Long Term residual Traffic

For Burst Traffic you need to have a higher Vote count this will be determined by the quality of your submission and your teaser. My recommendation ask your reader base to support you by Voting.

For Long term traffic it depend on how you wrote your teaser for example

For the past Hour this post has received 98 unique hits by Google.

http://bloggingzoom.com/Sports/Manny_Ramirez_on_Jay_Leno_-_Yardbarker/

Anne look at hoe the teaser is written, this is a proper keyword optimized submission.

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=DAUS,DAUS:2006-09,DAUS:en&q=manny%20ramirez%20on%20jay%20leno

This is one of the search strings that has brought traffic to this submissions.

Right now one of the problems are that people really do not understand to write keyword focused articles.

Again notice what keywords are in the google search and look at the submission.

Now you will notice that the site that was submitted is nowhere to be seen in the first 5 pages of goole but yet he took position one artificially because of Blooging Zoom, this is what we do ;)

We put people to compete for placement they would never had had a chance before.

I hope this helped Anne

I agree with Anne; despite having all of my articles hit the front page for a decent amount of time, traffic hasn’t came. I’ve gotten two hits from BZ, and Google traffic hasn’t increased.

I’m sure I can do better writing my teaser, but it does appear, at least at this time, ‘blogs about blogs’ are having more success.

I still love the service, and hope it opens up more doors for niche blogs. I’ll keep submitting and see what happens.

Jeremy the number one reason people are not getting traffic is because of there submissions.

You have gotten two hits but this submission has had 71 hits in the past hour from Google alone.

http://www.google.com/search?q=manny+ramirez+on+jay+leno&hl=en&rls=DAUS,DAUS:2006-09,DAUS:en&start=0&sa=N

Once I see your submissions I can determine at least from the Google stand point what is wrong.

Ok Jeremy I know what is wrong. But First I will need to explain and hope others read this so this will not happen again.

First Burst Traffic:

Bloggers do not click other Blogger ads this is why only a selected few make money with a How to Make Money Blogg.

In other words right now about 60% of our traffic is you guys submitting your post and coming back to see how it is doign.

I ask you Jeremy how many times have you visited another bloggers post at Blogging Zoom how many Votes have you given to others submissions and how many Submitters websites have you visited and remember I can see the stats ;)

But do not feel bad everybody is doing the same except maybe 5 and that is ok you do not need to be doing that we want to build loyalty from somewhere else.

In other words Jeremy you will start seeing serious Burst traffic once we have a base of Blogging Zoom users who are not professional bloggers.

Doing the math on how fast we are growing I would say in about a month we will start seeing real Burst.

Now comes the RESIDUAL traffic. made an example on Anne’s comment the site that was submitted would never had a chance to take position one in Goolge but yet using Blooging Zooms authority that we have established in only 3 days we took position one, if you know a bit about SEO you would agree that is just crazy that in three days we are taking already number one positions with keywords in Google.

Now as time goes by and you guys keep making submissions and Court and myself keep building keyword authority we will keep expanding the keyword list where we will help you guys compete.

Example right now with the keyword combination of “manny ramirez on jay leno” we take position one but with Blogging we probably are not even close to the front page this is because there is a higher competition of sites with authority.

Now let’s go to your post.

Jeremy’s Consumer’s Corner: Transformers DVD

Jeremy there is no way I can get your post to rank high on any key word because there is no focus on one.

This is how I would write the teaser to use Blogging Zoom who has a higher authority to get me Google traffic.

Transformers DVD at Jeremy’s Consumer’s Corner

Transformers DVD yes finally we have it. The Transformers DVD was released this week and we have had time to do a review.

The Transformers DVD was a long wait considering that The Transformers movie was such a huge blockbusters. Please come and visit us so you get the full review of the Transformers DVD.

And please if you enjoyed the The Transformers DVD make sure you Zoom our post.

387 characters

Jeremy this is a keyword focus submissions of course this is just an example and you would chose the wording but here in my example I am targeting “Transformers DVD” BTW tough competition for first page but if you do not get “Transformers DVD” you might get another combination with the rest of the words in your submission.

Jeremy I hope this helps.

4 submissions/13 zooms, 9 of which were for other people, including a couple of yours… out of those 9, I think I visited 7 of the actual sites (give or take), and left comments on more than one person’s page…

I might not be ‘hardcore,’ but Im not leeching either..

Thanks for the advice on teaser writing, I’ll work on it.

Keep up the great work!

I am sure Courtney and Vic will have posts explaining how to have good titles. If you want to get Zoomed, dugg, etc. you have to have good titles. I know that I am still learning this. I know I provide good content but I am a new site and I am not too good at writing good titles that also hit the keywords I would like to.

For example “The Macro Trader » Singapore EWS” is one of my titles. I realized that even though that is a really useful post (at least if you want to invest in Asia) the title is about as catchy as “I woke up.” No one cares. So we need to do a better job of making titles that are at least kind of catchy, have a keyword or two worth using, and that are descriptive. A tall order maybe but over time it will help a ton.

BTW my best post has gotten me over 40 hits from Zooming and my worst has gotten me 12. My site has been up for two weeks and I have already seen traffic progress thanks to Zooming.

Hey:

I totally understand your example about Manny and Leno in using keywords in the summary.

My conclusion is that non-teaching blogs are going to have a harder time with this, because people don’t really search for how to tell their kids about the birds and the bees. I get tons of google searches for porn simply because we tell our boys about sex using anatomically correct names for parts!

Porn seekers don’t tend to hang around to read an article about the X-rated picture on the back of the Axe body wash.
Thanks!

Example at Bu.bulicio.us two weeks ago I had a person reach my site with “Anna Nicole Dead Halloween costume” I do not know what scared me the most the person searching this or that I actually had this word combination on my website LOL.

I was hoping that Vic could take a look at the BZ button on my blog when he has some time (like that ever happens ha) as it doesn’t count the Zooms on the home page but does track them fine on the subpage. Probably something I have done but you could fill a book with what I don’t know about programming!

Vic,

You are a true gentleman.

I suspect the problem is blogger (read Google) as it typically doesn’t allow you to post javascript in the posts. I was suprised that it actually allowed the script - not surprised that it didn’t work properly.

The only third party code that I have found that works in the posts belong to Feedburner which of course Google owns.

As I said I am a moron on the code front but thought this might help point you in the right direction.

Someone with your talents may be able to modify the “posts widget” to allow third party scripts to work. If not thanks for giving it a shot.

Sure enough they have. Here is a link to how to modify the template just make sure you change the domain from sphinn to BZ

I used to use only StumbleUpon basically, but now I think Blogging Zoom is becoming a new favorite.

A few days ago I joined and submitted my own article, and I logged back onto the site today and found it had 13 zooms and had gone hot.

I know this isn’t a huge accomplishment or anything but like you have said throughout this whole process, Blogging Zoom really is about the USERS and really helps the USERS.

I’ll definitely be using Blogging Zoom on a daily basis now! :)
