Court’s Keyword Sniper 1.0 WordPress Theme

December 26th, 2007 by Court

My ‘Introduction To Keyword Sniping‘ post quickly became the all-time most popular post on Court’s Internet Marketing School. Keyword sniping by creating niche blogs is what will take you to your financial goals and I feel very content right now that you guys have recognized the truths in that post.

That post was released as an introduction for a reason - I’m not finished covering keyword sniping, in fact we’re just getting started. If you don’t want to miss the series on keyword sniping, subscribe to my RSS feed. The next step in my keyword sniping series is the release of the Keyword Sniper 1.0 WordPress theme.

I based Keyword Sniper 1.0 on the Modern Paper theme by Performancing because it can be used in almost any niche - perfect for sniping. I’ll explain to you what I did to make this theme the ultimate keyword sniper, but let’s first have a look:

Keyword Sniper Theme Shot

In order to turn Modern Paper into the ultimate theme for keyword sniping, I made some very heavy modifications.

Keyword Sniper 1.0 Mods

  • I added a dynamic, h1 keyword section above the RSS icon. This will allow you to have a unique h1 section on every url in your site - each containing the main keyword for your site, followed by the post or page titles of the pages they’re on. I hard-coded this in to happen automatically.
  • I changed the site title to not use the h1 tag. This will ensure that you have a unique h1 for each url on your site.
  • I altered the code for the sidebars to allow for maximum SEO benefit with or without widgets. With Keyword Sniper 1.0, you can use any WordPress widgets you please without losing any SEO benefit whatsoever.
  • I altered the coding to make it valid HTML and CSS, with or without widgets. There were a few errors prior to my modifications.
  • I added a dynamic link section to the footer file that allows Keyword Sniper 1.0 to make a site-wide, anchor text link back to your homepage.

Browser Compatibility

I’ve tested Keyword Sniper 1.0 on the following browsers:

  • Firefox 1.0+
  • Firefox 2.0+
  • Internet Explorer 6
  • Internet Explored 7
  • Safari
  • Opera

Installation

  • Download
  • Extract by right-clicking your mouse and selecting ‘Extract All’ or ‘Extract Here’.
  • Add your keyword on line 27 of the header.php - you will replace ‘Your Keyword Here’ with the keyword you’re trying to target. Use caps for the first letter of each word.
  • Upload via FTP to your ‘wp-content/themes/’ folder.
  • In your WordPress admin, go to ‘Presentation’ and then select ‘Keyword Sniper 1.0′.
  • In your WordPress admin, go to ‘Options’ and add in your keyword as the Blog Title. Use caps for the first letter of each word.

Great idea. I just got into creating Wordpress themes. This is cool concept. Wish I would have heard of it before I created mine. I guess there is always the next one.

Thanks for the excellent resource, Court. Not only is this a great tool to use for my keyword sniping experiments, but your explainations of the modifications are also good pointers to us SEO dabblers and junkies.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your continuing series. Keep up the good work.

Hi Court,

Cool stuff, I intend to use that theme on some of my newer niche sites that will develop over time since I used a new domain (dumb move)

But not all is lost I guess. Thanks for doing this.

I’ve noticed a lot of new visitors using mobile browsers.

I’m assuming this theme doesn’t take advantage of mobile browsers by default — which is a shame since the mobile browsers seem to be increasing.

Hi, Court,

Thanks, great job.

I recently changed all my niche blogs (More than 10 blogs) to Modern Paper 1.0 after you released those 48 SEO WordPress Themes.

All these blogs use the same Modern Paper 1.0, thus saving time and hassle when it comes to installing Google AdSense and other programs. I don’t have to crack my head changing the colors of ads. Before that, I was so silly to use different WordPress themes for all my blogs….wasting time.

Now, I will definitely use this latest Keyword Sniper by you…;D

Great stuff, Court. The Modern Paper theme is simple and neat to do the job. You guys (and Vic) are awakening the blogosphere. In the coming weeks or months, more and more folks will be talking about niche blogging. The ball is rolling into your court.

Hi Court,

Forgive my ignorance on the techie part, but will your theme work on wordpress 2.1.3?

Or, do we even use wordpress 2.1.3 anyway in order to use your theme?

Forgive me if I’m asking the wrong queston.

I haven’t tried it on 2.1.3 but it should work it without any problem. It works perfectly on the latest WordPress version, which is 2.3.1.

Thanks for a great theme, Court.

Court,

Just to clarify, if we install All in One SEO plugin on the Keyword Sniper theme, we would still fill out the Home Title, Home Description, and Home Keywords on the Options>All in One SEO page, right?

Also, can you please explain the feature of “I added a dynamic link section to the footer file that allows Keyword Sniper 1.0 to make a site-wide, anchor text link back to your homepage” that you mention in your post. Is this footer link the name of your site in the copyright notice?

Thanks!

Nice work Court, I like the theme but I can’t seem to get indexed quick with it. I used Vics advice on other blogs and all my posts are up in 10 minutes or less.

With this theme I have only been able to get the trick post indexed and none others. Is there something in the theme we need to modify to get this to work? Thanks.

Stan that couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the theme. It’s either coincidence or you have something wrong with your settings. If you want to give me the URL I’ll have a look.

Could you do a post explaining how to add google adsense to this theme? It would be great if you explained how to add it to each of the different areas of the theme that you might want to add adsense to.

Thanks,

Hi Court,
Great modifications you have done to your theme there!

I had a query. Hope you can help.

In place of “Your Keyword” in the h1 section in the header, is it possible for me to define that individually for each post?

[What I am trying to do is - get the title of the page and the “your keyword” part to be the same. I am using All-in-one-SEO plugin to define custom titles for each page, but I don’t know how to define custom “Your Keyword” for each page.]

Thanks a lot for putting in the effort.
Your help shall be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

I used the theme in two places. In the link here to my usage, the theme automatically adds the title to the keyword. It has to do with the version you use, just like the widgets feature.

I hope I’m right on that I’m sure Court will let us know.

Yes it does support tags. The easiest way to install them is by using widgest. Go to ‘Presentation’ and widgets in your WordPress admin.

Nice one Court, thanks.

I don’t want to take the mic, but if you (or anyone) could advise me on how to put up my own picture/logo where the big black, sexy title bar is, I’d appreciate it.

I worked it out on other themes, but whatever is right in front of my nose is invisible to me right now, and I’m already doing 14 hour days on net stuff.

No worries if not, I love your blog.

I see black background on

Headliner, header and header right. Then you have an image in the background of navbar.

To put an image on the entire header and navbar background you might have to divide your image into four parts. Then you have to worry about the type being read.

If you look at my css you can see all the background information in one place.

Sorry….headerright is image as background, and navbar is image as background.

If you look at my site I turned the headliner and header left to ugly color. I’ll leave like that for a little while.

The header background is determined by .headerright and .headerleft in the stylesheet (style.css).

Not sure how to put an image there as my CSS skills are very basic.

Hey Court

Was looking through your theme. Not sure if this is on purpose or something you’ll want to change.

The 404 file uses the h1 tag, so the 404 does not have a unique h1 tag.

Not sure how much this matter.

Other than that, thanks. Used its as a basis for my new sites design.

Courtney,

I was getting an invalid html validation on this theme from WC3 validation services. I was using the widgets on the sidebar.

The search form needs <form instead of <form in file

widgets.php

after I changed it, I got valid html from WC3.

Finally, I can pay you back! Ha ha!

Hey Court,

Just downloaded then uploaded the template but in my WordPress admin panel it says:

“Broken Themes

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template.
Name Description
Stylesheet is missing.”

Any ideas what I’ve done wrong? Everything else in WordPress seems to be working OK. I downloaded WordPress for the first time so maybe I have a different version than this template was designed for.
