Using The All-In-One SEO Pack To Target Keywords
January 4th, 2008 by CourtSearch engine optimization can help you to get top rankings for keywords and get you closer to your financial goals. Although you can go through this process using any content management system (Blogger, Joomla, WordPress, Mambo, etc.) or by using pure HTML, I would highly recommend using WordPress because you can configure it to be more search engine friendly than the other systems. If you decide not to use WordPress, don’t complain to me when you can’t get your desired ranking.
Now in order to get the most out of WordPress, you will need to install the All-In-One SEO pack plugin. I have a lesson on how to install it here: Plugin Upgrade – SEO Title Tag Replaced By All-In-One SEO.
After you have it installed, you will configure the plugin by going to Options > All in One SEO in your WordPress admin. When you configure the All-In-One SEO plugin, you will want to make sure to add the keyword(s) you’re trying to target into the ‘Home Title’ box. You will then make a sentence for the ‘Home Description’ box, using your keyword near the beginning.
Below those boxes, the plugin will give you several options – different ways that it can work. As you can see in the screen shot to the left, I have chosen to allow the plugin to ‘Rewrite Titles’. This makes it so the plugin creates an HTML title tag out of your post titles.
I also chose to allow the All-In-One SEO Pack to ‘Autogenerate Descriptions’. This creates a meta description for each of your post pages. If you don’t know what that is, it’s ok – trust me that you want to do this.
As you can see, I left the ‘Max Number of Words in Auto-Generated Descriptions’ on 25, that’s a good number for that.

I haven’t read the instructions on how to install it yet but I presume you need to install this plugin right from the start of your blog and not six months in when you have over a 100 posts?
January 4th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Not at all Bruce, you should install it now.
January 4th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
I’m not sure I understand though. It sounds like one of the things it does is rewrite titles. Won’t that cause a whole bunch of dead links in the search engines? Does it change the post titles you already have or just going forward? Sorry, maybe I should know this.
January 4th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
It doesn’t change the URLs Bruce, it changes the HTML title tags.

I had the same doubt, now clarified. Thanks.
January 4th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Well that auto description is really brilliant ideas. I do believe some search engine has number in their algo to set aside
pages. But not sure whether it is
number of words or character length or maybe both. At the moment my title is 17 words(98 characters) and description 30 words(173 characters). Do you think it is excessive?
January 4th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
I think it’s fine but you could find out for yourself in like two days by making two similar pages – one with the amount you have and one with less. See which one ranks better.
January 4th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Hey Court,
In the screenshot in this post, it shows “Max number of words…”. I don’t have this option in the latest version of the plug-in, unless I am totally missing it.
I assume that this is now set to some length that we have no control over.
Have you noticed this?

I’m still using the old version Marshall. When it isn’t broken… I don’t fix it.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Yeah, I know what you mean!
Of course, on the new installs, I get the latest and greatest.
I assume since it isn’t there anymore, they have figured out some way to deal with it.
Have a great weekend!
January 4th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Court,
Should we also be using the old version of wordpress or do you recommend we upgrade to 2.3.2 . Thanks
January 4th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Hi Court,
I have been reading your Keyword Sniping articles with great interest. I really enjoy the article with the site included, that really brought home what you were talking about, and sent be back through your posts on the subject.
I do have a question. Well the All-In-One SEO plug in work for a site not set up to be a keyword sniping site. I am thinking it might be useful for by current blog, with regard to creating titles and meta tags?
I also am loving your asides to those who might not follow your exact instructions.

If you use WordPress Nick, you need to use that plugin. Even if it isn’t a keyword sniping site you should use it the same way I have explained in this post.
January 4th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Thanks , I will get that install right away.

I love this plugin!
The way you use it, Court, it doesn’t matter that much that you don’t have the latest version, but I like to enter my descriptions manually. The newest version has a word count feature that’s very helpful.
These keyword-sniping articles rock!
January 4th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Court,
I installed this plugin after reading about it on your site a while back. But I was unsure of what to input for some of the options. This post clears up a lot of that for me. Thanks.

Hey court, I’m building my niche sites using wordpress but I’m only using static pages rather than using it as a blog.
I have the home pages of my sites totally optimised for my main keyword by setting a static page as the homepage and then writing an article on my main keyword for the home page.
The home page then links to 5 other long tail keyword pages and in turn these page link to another set of long tail keyword pages. All the article pages are linking to the home page.
I have set 10 sites up in this format this week.
I was just wondering what your opinion is of setting the sites up in this way or do you believe it to be more beneficial to make the most out of wordpress’s blog capabilities such as pinging and tag pages.
I’m pretty confident about the way I have it set currently but only time will tell I guess.

Court,
Your keyword snipe blog theme is sweet! The widgetizer is so fricking cool! I will be using this theme for all my niche (keyword sniping) blogs, unless you don’t think I should
January 5th, 2008 at 1:03 am
Hi, Court I am fairly new to your blog, came across while finding a SEO friendly wordpress theme. This is a great place, very informative and resourceful.
One of my post was ranking well for its keywords but suddenly it disappeared from the results page and I found out that instead of the post its the homepage which is placed on the 3rd or 4th pages of results. The post itself is keyword optimised, then why is google going for the homepage instead of that post.
May be I should have more links to that post itself. How should I go about it?
January 5th, 2008 at 3:06 am
Further investigation says that 2 of my pages are delisted from the index, they were at the first results page yesterday. Why could that happen? and what could be the possible solution?
January 5th, 2008 at 4:00 am
Hi Court,
What should I do?
I found you trough Blogging Gigs only day before. I’m really excited about keyword sniping and I would love to get into it using wordpress. But at the moment I can’t afford it
(FYI, I 23 but i’m still studying and here in 3rd world countries we don’t have part time work, I’ve made about 85$ from adsense but not able to transfer it still.)
January 5th, 2008 at 7:08 am
Hey Court,
Have you ever used the Prosense Theme? I love how it is set up for Adsense already. Do you know anything SEO wise that it is deficient?
I am using your Sniper theme, but thought it would be nice to mix it up now and then.

Well thanks for the feedback Court. Never thought about doing it before. You have been so helpful. Wish you all the best in 2008.
January 5th, 2008 at 8:25 am
This entire series has been simply mind boggling. Thanks Court. Hope to see many more coming!
January 5th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Hi Court,
I’m totally convinced that your sniper theme (along with following your advice in the sniper keyword article) is the reason why I suddently moved up from page 18 to page 2 of Google for my niche keyword in less than a full week.
This is getting good…
Thanks so much for all you do.

One more really informative post! At the risk of repeating myself, let me say thanks for giving us the benefit of your experience, insight and knowledge

Which plug in do you use to get the tag clouds on the side bar?
March 1st, 2008 at 6:39 am
Hey Court,
I was hoping you might be able to help me. I saw your post on the “All in One SEO Pack…â€
I can see my meta keywords and description on the pages, but my title’s are not on anywhere.
I am not sure. Any suggestions? I read your article and have the “Rewrite Titles†checked.
Second, does “All in One†have a users manual, like your article? I don’t know what Title Formats are or the other boxes you can check. I am a newbie, by the way, as if you did not know.
I’ve looked on the Wordspress and All in One forums.
My web site: http://www.ConnectionCare.com
Thanks so much,
john

I noticed that you left the noindex boxes unchecked and I was curious why. Maybe you accomplish the same thing from robots.txt or another plugin, but everything I’ve read about SEO says to noindex categories, tags, archives, etc to avoid duplicate content. Your thoughts?
