Court’s Links - 4/2/2008

April 2nd, 2008 by Court

Here’s what I’ve been reading as of late! If you would like to be featured in the next edition please send me a link to an article or post (please don’t send me a link to your homepage). You can visit my contact page to do this.

Why you should Never Start a Business in College - It’s definitely a terrible idea to start a business in college - could there be a worse time? :) This is a hilariously sarcastic article and I couldn’t agree more.

Alexa Changes - Andy Beard picked up on the fact that Alexa seems to be reporting differently lately. I’ve noticed this effect on my site and can say that it DOES seem different. My traffic is up like 50% since December and if you looked at an Alexa graph it would seem like it has come down!

The Process of a Business Nip Tuck - Does your business have love handles? If it does - you might be crushed by the power of negative perception…

Download The Blog Monetization Strategies E-book And Win $300! - You can never know too much about monetization!!

Domain Lookup Firefox Extension - This is a very cool extension for Firefox that allows you to highlight text with your mouse and find out if the corresponding domain is already registered.

Avatar Resources - Using an avatar can definitely help with your branding!

The Eight Most Common Internet Writing Mistakes - We all know how important writing is, especially if you’re a blogger. Watch out for these mistakes!

Google Analytics 101: Some Basic Setup Tips - Great basic tips for using Google Analytics.

Self-Discipline - the missing link - Lack of self-discipline can kill any type of success.

Taking Care of Aging Parents as a Family - This post is off-topic but hit home for me. I watched my mother struggle with this as she was trying to take care of my grandmother.

Hi Court,

Thanks for including my Avatar Central page in Court’s Links. I appreciate it!

In case you didn’t notice, there’s a blurb about your avatar on one of the pages linked from that URL. (Click the “read more” link under the heading “Gain readers with your blog’s avatar.”) :-)

Thanks for the link, Courtney!

The aging parent article hits me too, by the way. It’s never an easy situation.

Thank you for posting that domain lookup firefox plugin… I had seen that, left the page, forgot it, and I couldnt remember the page I had read about it on, and I am so glad that you posted that. Thank you so much.

I also loved the Google Analytics article. I am off to set up those stats right now.

I’m in the same boat as you on the Alexa rank. My traffic has been way up in 2008 but my ranking is getting worse (last I checked).

Court, thank you for considering and accepting my post on caring for aging parents.

After recently losing my elderly father in-law, after my husband and I took care of “Popo” without any help or assistance from anyone else in the family, I couldn’t help but write that post since caring for elderly parents is the responsibility of everyone in the family, not just one or two people. I vented in my own way. :)

I think that starting a business or launching a startup is the best time to do when you are at college. If you have a look at all successful startups you will notice that most guys set these up while at college.

I tried to post my comment yesterday and the day before, but was unable to as there was some problem with your server. I hope that you are aware of that.

I did not submit anything that I have written, but two of the articles recommended by you are really worth reading again and again. Thanks.

Thanks Court for the inclusion. Loved the bit with the love handles ;-)

@ Steven: do you find that posting frequency affects Alexa? I noticed when I started posting less often my rankings fell too. Just wondered whether this might be a reason.

Bunch of interesting links, thanks for the peek inside your current headspace, Court.

College startups ain’t half bad, Google, Facebook and Thawthe Consulting are three industry relevant offerings that immediately springs to mind.

Can relate to the elderly parents bit, my poor mother had to care for her late father with no support from the rest of the family. However, when he passed on they were all there in double quick time to claim their respective inheritances, and to dispute my mothers share on the basis that they had seniority over her in the family pecking order!
