Large Adsense Clicks Make My Day

April 7th, 2008 by Mark

Yesterday I was looking at the adsense stats for the niche sites Court and I run, and I saw something noteworthy - a single click on a site we’ve ignored for months for….quite a bit of money. I can’t say how much the click was for; that would be against Google’s Terms of Service. Let’s just say the click was worth enough to write a blog post about it.

As I admired the Large Click, I had a few thoughts. One of them was “man, I wish we could scale those kinds of numbers.” That thought was followed quickly by “probably not going to happen any time soon.” That’s okay though. These are keyword sniping sites, and we’re not trying to get rich with them. We use them for lunch money and to test the things you see taught on this site.

I have to share another thought I had: “Thank goodness we’re working in this niche - the clicks pay nicely.”

Don’t Be Afraid Of High Paying Adsense Niches

So what’s the lesson of the day? As you build your sniper sites, don’t be afraid to go after highly competitive, highly saturated markets. They shouldn’t be your only sites of course, because they’re going to take time to conquer. But while you’re patiently building them, you’ll get the occasional glimpse of what life will be like once you get the first page ranking for your target keyword.

As I write this I’m thinking of two of our sites. One is geared toward credit cards, and the other toward personal loans. Both of our main keywords for those sites are incredibly competitive.

The credit card site is sandboxed and we’ve ignored it for nearly six months now. In spite of being in the sandbox, we get little traffic here and there. When we get clicks on that site, we smile. They pay well. When that site ends its day at the beach (as Grizz so eloquently puts it), we know it’s going to be a great earner for us.

The personal loans site hovers around page 7 on Google for its main keyword, but we get enough long tail traffic to it that it consistently earns about $10 per day (thanks to the high payouts for that niche).

Lunch Money Now, Big Money Later

Again, for now that’s lunch money. Later, when we hit page 1 for our main keyword, I feel confident that site will earn us $50 to $100 per day. It’s just a matter of time and patience.

In the past when Court has talked about pursuing high-paying markets with niche sites, he always gets several comments about saturation, waste of time, you’ll never make it with loans, credit cards, etc.

You’re only wrong to pursue sites in those markets if you’re impatient. The right strategies will pay off over time. A credit card site, a loan site, or anything equally competitive and lucrative will be part of a well-rounded portfolio of sniper sites.

Mark,

You are absolutely right! One of my first niche sites I created is a used domain name for a car insurance related niche. While it doesn’t get much traffic, maybe 10 or less hits per day, when I do get a click, I also smile.

Not only do I smile, but it encourages me to work harder on promoting it.

Using article marketing has been the biggest driver of traffic to this site, plus several long tail keywords for specific articles.

It just takes time and patience!

After years of building 2 “regular” sites I am just getting started in building several smaller sniping sites. This is a good reminder to keep on going!

“Lunch Money Now, Big Money Later” … thats going to be my new motto. I don’t wanna be discouraged by low or no earnings, but just realizing i can grab a bite to eat without dipping into my main finances…

That’s fantastic that you got some large clicks!! One day… one day…

By the way Mark, I am going to have to decline for now, but thanks for the call and the chat! (BTW, my flagship blog had it’s first 100+ uniques day, exactly 3 weeks into it.)

I really appreciate your candor in talking about what’s going on with your sniping sites. I’ve been experimenting with a couple of sites that I started after I read Court’s series on keyword sniping.

You guys deserve all of you success because you work so hard and even share some of your knowledge with your readers.

Best of luck and keep getting those large clicks!

There have been a number of sites I’ve owned for a quite some time and I’ve just let them rot. Recently I’ve been revisiting them, adding new content and getting new links and within a short space of time they are bringing in decent money.

Spending time optimising the sites for CTR also means you can earn decent money with very low traffic.

Great encouragement form you there, Mark- thanks. Just one question for you- or Court- how do you know if a site is sandboxed?

A site that is sandboxed doesn’t get ranked for the keywords you’re trying to target. Usually you know that it’s sandboxed because you build links and content and that site won’t move up. :)

For some of us ten dollars a day will be very encouraging. This post is yet another great motivating article. Thank you.

I’ve gotten a few of these myself. It’s kind of like they come out of the blue. Every once and a while the stars align and that high paying ad gets displayed to a visitor who’s geo-location and needs match up just right.

I don’t really think too much about building a site specifically for high paying adsense clicks.. the rates could change by the time you get enough traffic to profit from it.

I couldn’t have said that better — all it takes is patience. Online marketing is littered with people who think that they can toss up a quick site, get it ranking quickly, make a ton of money and retire to the Bahamas. The only problem with that plan is, well, all of it (well, maybe not that retiring part). If you can invest patience with your tightly targeted site, then you’ll eventually become a success. Put in your time and you’ll eventually get money. ;)
