Online Case Study – Monopowiki

April 27th, 2008 by Court

Being featured in this type of study on Court’s Internet Marketing School is a paid service that we created to help businesses to reach the next level. Most sites never get there, and these reviews can help you to expose the errors that are holding you back. You should be able to learn a lot by reading these studies, or you can buy your own review if you would like us to take a look at your site.

“The next big thing” is a phrase taken from the Monopowiki home page and indicates a possibility to create huge leverage with a network of content rich pages. The whole concept is taken from the earlier success of other wikis such as the Million Dollar Wiki that has taken the Internet by storm last year.

The owner of Monopowiki admits being inspired by said wiki, but he also wanted to add more usability to the concept, as well as giving paid wiki members the option of building stronger pages by editing the free wiki pages.

How it Works

Users can either elect to sign up for free or pay $25/year per page to use Monopowiki. Page names can be chosen freely, considered they are still available and the whole transaction takes place via Paypal.

The owner of Monopowiki also reserves the right to deny submissions for quality purpose reasons. The idea is to create a network of content rich sites that can help users to:

  • Buy a page and use it to promote affiliate programs or information without being limited by editions of third parties
  • Buy a page and rent out links
  • Buy a page and hold on to it for speculation purposes (kind of like the stock market)
  • Become a free contributor and use it to promote your site

Paid Monopowiki users can create, edit and profit from their pages however they wish to. They can also edit all the free pages in the system and insert links to their own paid pages to benefit further from increased traffic and SEO opportunities.

Free users can also edit pages, but have to be aware that their page can be edited by other users any time. At present there is no limit as to how many times users can edit a page in any given day.

This might however change in the future.

To create a free page, all you have to do is sign up for free. Then login to your account and do a search for a term you want to write about. If the term already exists, you can edit an existing page, or hit the link “create this page” link in the search.

Page Creation Tools

Creating a page is fairly easy via the inbuilt editor. You can:

  • choose page templates
  • bold text
  • write italic text
  • create internal links (great for link clusters)
  • insert hyperlinks
  • embed images (be careful not to abuse Copyright issues)
  • link to media files
  • insert a mathematical formula
  • insert a signature file
  • insert a horizontal line

The system is pretty straightforward and it doesn’t take long to figure out how to use the tools within. There is also a FAQ section that answers some of the more obvious questions.

The Preferences section offers a range of options on how to setup your pages.

My Recommendations

After my initial inspection I was aware of a few “issues” that could potentially hurt the owner of Monopowiki.

While the concept of building wiki pages is an idea that can hold it’s own, it could also very easily turn into a useless exercise, abused by people who don’t care about giving real value, but are more concerned with pimping their pages with tons of affiliate links.

Also the fact that Google Adsense is currently allowed on the paid wiki pages invites black hatters to do their thing. Most of the existing pages currently on Monopowiki don’t provide any value to a reader looking for valuable information at all. Perhaps the only one that stood out so far was the Web Sites page with plenty of informative and relevant content.

I fear that the owner of Monopowiki will have to scrutinize those submissions very carefully which could become a rather tedious job, especially if those edits aren’t capped daily.

In Closing

To be honest, I am a little torn about this site. I do understand that the site is rather new and has only been launched on April 8th, 2008. So really, it is early days. For now, I can say that Monopowiki certainly has potential – if monitored correctly.

The site can become a strong force of clustered pages that could eventually rank in search engines. This however is only possible if the whole network of pages will work together in some ways, since the more internal links are created, the better for SEO.

If you are interested in purchasing some cool pages, now is the time to do so, since most terms haven’t been taken yet. For regular updates you can also visit the official Monopowiki blog.

Yah, I wasn’t too impressed with this site…. the idea’s been played out… I think they were too late to the party, and brought the same beer everyone else brought, just in a different container.

I don’t see this site working at all. No innovation. Too late. But hey, you can at least use the free features without any risk.

Court, toward the end of the article you say that “the more internal links are created, the better for SEO.” Would you be willing to elaborate on that a bit? I know your regularly link to your home page with the anchor text “internet marketing,” and also that linking from one post to another can help the bots index your site. But do you have a more systematic approach that you follow/recommend that you’d be willing to share? In addition to linking from one post to another and from one post to the home page, I’d be interest on your approach to article links in the sidebar from an SEO perspective.

Nice post but I think Monopowiki should be provided free to all users.
