Google PageRank is Updating

April 29th, 2008 by Court

Activity across my sites is showing that Google is currently updating toolbar PageRank, which is the PageRank that we can see with the Google toolbar.

I’ve seen updates in about 50% of my sites so far, including an update of my Colorado Lasik Surgery Guide. The site went from PR0 to PR3:

Unfortunately, Google seems to have squashed most of the PR checkers that allow you to check across multiple data centers, so many of you might not be able to see the changes quite yet. If anyone knows of a multi-datacenter PR checker that’s working, please let me know so I can post it for everyone.

The biggest winner so far is Daily Blog Tips, who is showing a PR7 on my toolbar:

Watch for a new lesson on preparing for the next update within the next few days. Subscribe by RSS if you want to make sure you don’t miss it. :)

Hmm, interesting. My toolbar has been acting a little glitchy (WP-Dashboard showing as a PR9) so it might be that.

We’ll have to wait and see, I guess :)

If my site is only a couple weeks old, will it be included in this round of PR updates? Not that I’m expecting much, but moving from unranked to 1 or 2 would be great!

Probably not muscle! It could happen but for you an update right now isn’t the best timing. You’ll see something on the next update though. :)

I was a 5 before Daniel, so it doesn’t look like mine has changed. I’m still showing you as a 7, but those of us that have seen the cross-datacenter checkers that used to work know that some datacenters show one thing, and others show another. After a few days they all settle in on one thing - I hope for you it’s a 7 or at least a 6. :)

Court - how much of an increase you search engine traffic did you gain when your site went from a PR 4 to a PR 5.

Thanks in advance.

Well PageRank actually updates gradually - this happens every single day. The thing we call a PageRank update is actually the time when Google lets us know what PageRank is, not when it actually updates.

Since my PageRank actually updated over time, it’s hard to say how much traffic increased, but I can tell you that it did increase.

PR is hard to understand. I’m seeing a PR3 on one of my blogs that’s been going for 4 months with about 7 articles. It gets about 20 visitors a day from organic searches, and no regular visitors, and has two natural external links, and a bunch from one of my other blogs which is a PR3. My SERP hasn’t changed much, right from the start I was the 7th search result for my keywords. The only changes being that as I add more articles, I start ranking for different keywords, usually on the second page.

Boostranks is showing PR2, it’s newer and gets maybe 1 visitor a day from google. Has a bunch of external links from comments I’ve left on various blogs about blogging.

I can’t see the point of PR, it seems easy to get to PR3 and there’s little difference in SERP to an unranked page.

All my blogs are hosted from the one IP address, I wonder if that has some trust value in googles eyes. I’ve heard that links from the same IP address aren’t as valuable as from completely different IP/data centers.

There are hundreds of Google data centers, and depending on where you live your toolbar will access a different one. Since they all update at different rates, it’s very common for us to see different PR. This will work itself out within the next couple days. It could still be a PR0, or it could be a PR1, PR2, or PR3. We just have to wait to see how it ends up.

It’s weird because I just checked two of my sites, one that had a PR1 and one with a PR0 and they were both showing PR3! I was excited that they’d both jumped up quite significantly.

But then I checked them again about ten minutes later and they’re both showing their original PR1 and PR0. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing but I hope they go back up to PR3 once Google has finished its updates.

Court, I really don’t understand the PR thing. It just makes no sense at all. I was a 0 then 3 then 0 then 2 and now 0 again according to my toolbar. WTF??

Comment by Court
MyAvatars 0.2

My thoughts on that David are that there’s no reason to pass sitewide PR to pages that are never going to rank for anything. My contact, about, advertise, terms and conditions, and privacy policy pages will NEVER rank for hardly anything, so I choose to pass that PR to pages that will.

Nofollowing your contact, featured articles, testimonials, and subscribe pages could help you to pass just a little more PR to pages that can rank - you want to give pages that could rank for something a sitewide link (you can use your popular articles section for this).

What worries me is my sitelinks. If you search for David Airey on Google, I have some sitelinks below the result. They show ‘hire David Airey’, ‘contact David Airey’ etc, which are the ones I want.

Do you know if adding ‘nofollow’ to those pages within my site structure will remove them from the search result sitelinks?

When I first seen this post I looked at my site and seen no change and I still had a PR0. I did a lot of link building when I first started the site 3 months ago so I thought I was sandboxed. I was hoping for a PR2 at least.

But!!!!!!

This morning dudes, I got my update and my site is now at a PR4 - thats what I call my outbreak rank since it is my sites first rank ever!

So here is my question Court?

What does it mean to have that rank and what can I look forward to in having it?

And on a more personal side of things for me to see my site with a page rank of 4 for its first rank makes me feel like all my hard work has finaly paid off and it feels great. I know a PR4 is not the best but for a site thats just over 3 months old I think it is darn good - What you think?

MyAvatars 0.2

Collin PR4 is fantastic for a site that’s only three months old. The best way you can leverage the PR4 right now is by doing some link exchanges with some sites in your industry. I would add a blogroll and get some exchange requests out to people that have PR similar to yours (PR3s and PR4s). This will help you to get some ranking advantage. :)

When you keyword snipe, do you first try to build rank, and then monetize later?

I’ll use Adsense. I would be using it already if I wasn’t sending so many ‘non-clickers’ over there all the time. I need to install openX so that I can show ads only to searchers, but it’s not very high on my list of priorities right now.

I have a site that shot from PR0 to PR3, verified from several different machines in different locations nationwide. The odd thing is that it is a new domain, and I have yet to do any backlink building for it. How often does the toolbar misreport PR? (I wouldn’t imagine it would be often, considering it’s not 3rd party).

I’m not complaining, obviously — I just don’t want to celebrate prematurely. ;)

I had a nice surprise this morning, waking up to PR3 on memyselfandiblog, but then my surprise grew even bigger when checking other sites.

I started one blog only 2 months ago, on a new domain, there are only 4 articles on there (which all got indexed within a few days), haven´t done any promotion, haven´t updated it for 4 weeks since I only wanted to set it up for the time being and it shows up in google (using the SEO for Firefox addon) and the PR toolbar as a PR3……..?!?!

I almost fell off my chair, surely this can´t be true? I used another 2 checkers and they both said the same, plus the site shows up n1 on the few keywords I targetted… *scratching the back of my head here*

Congrads on your Lasik site PR! I was wondering however, the comments on your site. Is there a benefit to “create” comments on a site like this? Does it do anything beneficial for a site to have comments on it if you are using it for Adsense?

Several of my sites have gone from a PR N/A or 0 up to a PR3 or 4 so far…haven’t seen any drop yet, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks Court,

When a comment is added, is it just like publishing the article again? Does WP ping again? I had heard that it does, but just wasn’t sure.

Last week, I changed my PR6 *.blogspot.com domain name to a customized domain name. Yesterday, it nosedived from a PR6 to PR0. A few hours later it went to a PR2 (still holding there), but it will probably go back to a PR0. Oh well…

Did you use a 301? If you did, your PR will probably be restored on the next update. This will definitely affect your organic traffic for a while though, unless you used an aged domain. That’s the reason I always tell people to start with a customized domain in the first place.

Regarding the customized domain name, I never expected the blog to really take off. It was more of a “personal notes” type site for me. But later, others found the tasks useful in their own work and Google indexed it well.

I used Blogger’s automatic redirect so I assumed it’s a 301. I agree with you…start with a customized domain name, especially if you are planning to do things beyond a personal page.

I got a nice bump to a PR 3 for my personal site. I was finally approved for a DMOZ link a few months ago so I’m guessing that had the most impact. Has anyone heard if the updates have settled down?

Our site went live in Feb 1st, so we just hit 90 days and we went from PR0 to PR4. It updated this morning.

Wow; who the hell cares about pagerank that a silly toolbar shows? You all still look at that stuff and you still believe what you are seeing?

My goodness; the further out I read so-called SEO types and their blogs, etc, the more I truly understand that the industry is not getting better…… but getting worse and worse and worse.

Tell you all what? Delete the Google toolbar and concentrate on building a great website. You will feel much, much better.

Court, looks like you got two presents this week. Not only does the Lasik site have a PR3, you now rank #1 (according to a Google search this morning) for your targetted keyword. Congrats!

PR0 to a PR3 is a huge jump. It all seems like black magic to me. I’ve even bought a few domain names with PR4 and had them knocked down to PR1 when I put all my content there. Is that normal?

I noticed a week ago that page rank incresed across the board. Almost as if G is giving a break on new sites.

Yes, when you buy dropped domains with PR you can loose PR value because the previous links may start to disconnect.
