Google PageRank is Updating

April 29th, 2008 by Court

Activity across my sites is showing that Google is currently updating toolbar PageRank, which is the PageRank that we can see with the Google toolbar.

I’ve seen updates in about 50% of my sites so far, including an update of my keyword sniping case study, the Colorado Lasik Surgery Guide. The site went from PR0 to PR3:

Unfortunately, Google seems to have squashed most of the PR checkers that allow you to check across multiple data centers, so many of you might not be able to see the changes quite yet. If anyone knows of a multi-datacenter PR checker that’s working, please let me know so I can post it for everyone.

The biggest winner so far is Daily Blog Tips, who is showing a PR7 on my toolbar:

Watch for a new lesson on preparing for the next update within the next few days. Subscribe by RSS if you want to make sure you don’t miss it. :)

Hmm, interesting. My toolbar has been acting a little glitchy (WP-Dashboard showing as a PR9) so it might be that.

We’ll have to wait and see, I guess :)

If my site is only a couple weeks old, will it be included in this round of PR updates? Not that I’m expecting much, but moving from unranked to 1 or 2 would be great!

Probably not muscle! It could happen but for you an update right now isn’t the best timing. You’ll see something on the next update though. :)

I am still seeing a PR5 on DBT, but I hope your toolbar is the right one :).

I am seeing a PR5 for your site, what was it before?

I was a 5 before Daniel, so it doesn’t look like mine has changed. I’m still showing you as a 7, but those of us that have seen the cross-datacenter checkers that used to work know that some datacenters show one thing, and others show another. After a few days they all settle in on one thing - I hope for you it’s a 7 or at least a 6. :)

I just noticed one of my keyword sniping sites I started 3 weeks ago inched up to PR 1. Hopefully some article marketing will boost it even more. Is this the first PR update since January?

PageRank updates are quarterly? Does that mean every 4 months? Or how do they do those?

Thanks.

I haven’t seen a change over at onemansgoal.com yet. This does however make me excited enough to devote this upcoming week to link building to be ready for next update.

Court - how much of an increase you search engine traffic did you gain when your site went from a PR 4 to a PR 5.

Thanks in advance.

Well PageRank actually updates gradually - this happens every single day. The thing we call a PageRank update is actually the time when Google lets us know what PageRank is, not when it actually updates.

Since my PageRank actually updated over time, it’s hard to say how much traffic increased, but I can tell you that it did increase.

yeah, I went from a PR3 to a PR0!
don’t know why - except that I haven’t been post a lot. But other than that there isn’t a lot of advertising or outbound links. pretty strange.

Your PR is a 2 Wealth. Try using the www on your domain name to see the PR. I would 301 one to the other to avoid the confusion if I were you.

PR is hard to understand. I’m seeing a PR3 on one of my blogs that’s been going for 4 months with about 7 articles. It gets about 20 visitors a day from organic searches, and no regular visitors, and has two natural external links, and a bunch from one of my other blogs which is a PR3. My SERP hasn’t changed much, right from the start I was the 7th search result for my keywords. The only changes being that as I add more articles, I start ranking for different keywords, usually on the second page.

Boostranks is showing PR2, it’s newer and gets maybe 1 visitor a day from google. Has a bunch of external links from comments I’ve left on various blogs about blogging.

I can’t see the point of PR, it seems easy to get to PR3 and there’s little difference in SERP to an unranked page.

All my blogs are hosted from the one IP address, I wonder if that has some trust value in googles eyes. I’ve heard that links from the same IP address aren’t as valuable as from completely different IP/data centers.

There are hundreds of Google data centers, and depending on where you live your toolbar will access a different one. Since they all update at different rates, it’s very common for us to see different PR. This will work itself out within the next couple days. It could still be a PR0, or it could be a PR1, PR2, or PR3. We just have to wait to see how it ends up.

It’s weird because I just checked two of my sites, one that had a PR1 and one with a PR0 and they were both showing PR3! I was excited that they’d both jumped up quite significantly.

But then I checked them again about ten minutes later and they’re both showing their original PR1 and PR0. I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing but I hope they go back up to PR3 once Google has finished its updates.

Back down to a big PR0 for me. I guess that’s what I get for changing the comments to no-follow and playing by the Google rules. My site is almost a year old and 100+ posts. Court, I really don’t understand the PR thing. It just makes no sense at all. I was a 0 then 3 then 0 then 2 and now 0 again according to my toolbar. WTF??

Meanwhile one of my nothing niche blogs that has been live for 2 months is a PR 2.

[…] Courtney Tuttle posted about this update this morning*. PageRank is not something I check a lot if I’m honest but I checked out the PR of websites I did know the PR of earlier today and nothing seemed to have changed. However, I checked again an hour or so again and noticed some websites getting a PR increase (BloggingTips seems to have gone from a 4 to a 5). Apologies for not posting about this earlier today but I didn’t want to post about it unless I was certain an update was actually happening. […]

Congrats on the jumps in PR. I was shocked when Matt Ridout dropped a comment on one of my sites congratualting me for my PR jump. Yicrosoft Directory Girl, which I just began in February, went from PR0 to 6. I was in a state of shock most of the day. Too cool. My SEO site only jumped one spot PR3 to 4. Still sweet though.

Congrats again. (I Sphunn btw) ;-)

I notice you add ‘nofollow’ to various static pages here, such as contact, archives etc. Perhaps I should give that a shot, placing a little more emphasis on my portfolio and less on my featured articles page for instance.

Comment by Court
MyAvatars 0.2

My thoughts on that David are that there’s no reason to pass sitewide PR to pages that are never going to rank for anything. My contact, about, advertise, terms and conditions, and privacy policy pages will NEVER rank for hardly anything, so I choose to pass that PR to pages that will.

Nofollowing your contact, featured articles, testimonials, and subscribe pages could help you to pass just a little more PR to pages that can rank - you want to give pages that could rank for something a sitewide link (you can use your popular articles section for this).

You make good points.

What worries me is my sitelinks. If you search for David Airey on Google, I have some sitelinks below the result. They show ‘hire David Airey’, ‘contact David Airey’ etc, which are the ones I want.

Do you know if adding ‘nofollow’ to those pages within my site structure will remove them from the search result sitelinks?

Yes David it probably will and I would say that having those pages in your sitelinks is probably more important for you, because of the nature of your site.

I would definitely leave those two pages as they are, considering that.
