Introducing Dateless Sniper 1.1

May 20th, 2008 by Court
Welcome to Court's Internet Marketing School...we have mountains of information to share with you about creating a low maintenance income on the internet, and the best place to start is with my free email mini-course: "5 Days to Success With Keywords."

The course will teach you:
  • How you can create an extremely low-maintenance internet income using free traffic from Google.
  • How to avoid earning pennies per day from a website you invested hundreds of hours building.
  • How to choose the right niche keywords - those with high potential payouts and not too much competition.
Just fill out the easy form below and I'll send you the first installment right away. And don't worry - all you'll ever get from me is value-packed content. I'll never share, rent, or sell your personal information. Enjoy...and thanks for visiting!

As some of you know, WordPress 2.5+ has some issues running widgets in certain themes. Buggy code in 2.5 causes a break in quite a few themes that run double sidebars. Since this is the case with the original Dateless Sniper, I decided to create a new version that doesn’t break, and have make a few other significant changes including:

  • Removal of the RSS icon
  • Change to a single sidebar
  • Increased width on content section

This theme was created for maximum SEO benefit, is widgetized, and could be used in any niche. Here’s how the new version looks:

Enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions about the theme!!

I have one Noob question for all users of Dateless Sniper Theme. I can’t figure out how to put AdSense on top of post titles. I see that is possible on Court’s Colorado Lasik site, but the code confuses me.

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

You are going to edit both the home.php and index.php files and paste your Adsense code right after the div tag that ends with: id=”contentleft”>

It should be near the top of each of those files. :)

Court, you say that the new version “was created for maximum SEO benefit.” Forgive my noob Q:, but exactly how does this new design help with SEO?

The old version was also created for maximum SEO benefit Ed. However, if you want to read about why I have created this theme and have taken on the huge project of creating SEO friendly versions of many themes, you can read this post:

Back then I had 48, now there are over 100. :)

I liked having 2 colums. It gave me a extra good CTR spot for adsense and affiliates. How easy would it be for someone to hack like that? I bet if someone did it court would post it? Maybe?

If someone did it and it worked properly, of course I would post it!

The first thing I thought of when I read the title to this post was “Match.com” .

I’ve been awake too long. :)

Very elegant theme,

Barbara

Do those SEO themes other than this one print well? On this very site, I cannot get a decent printout with either Firefox or I.E. Print Preview in I.E. chops off right side regardless of scale. Firefox ordinarily does an OK job of scaling, so I prefer it. BUT, Print Preview in FF in any scale shows just one page running off the bottom, even though if it would print properly, there would be several pages.
This happens all too often on websites that try too hard to be “kewl”.
A pity, since I think you have a great site - contentwise.
Your previous theme WAS JUST FINE — AND it printed well.
Regards,
David Bean

Sorry to disappoint David. Honestly, my previous theme wasn’t working with my goals - this theme is. There are a lot of reasons to go to a ‘kewler’ theme. If you could see the stats and evaluate the performance of the new theme, you would agree that we’re a lot better off now.

Does this new theme work on free Wordpress blogs or only self hosted blogs?

Thanks.

Sorry Sunshine, I don’t know what the rules are at WordPress.com. Does anyone know if you can use any theme you want there?

I was just wondering, how is the CTR with the sniper 1.0 theme? It seems like there are a limited number of built in spots to place adsense ads, so I’m just wondering how well it does.

Thank you Court…I like the extra left margin space; in the old version the text was flush against the left edge. This is much better, thanks.

It is nice to see a good theme made by someone you can trust. That is something that can be hard to find now.

Hi Court, Thank you so much for your continued efforts.

I’m curious where you suggest placing adsense codes and what format you would use with this theme?

That’s the biggest problem I see with the theme right now. I don’t know where others think would be the best spot, but I like to have a leaderboard, a tower on my inside column and a 250×300 in my first post. I guess you could just skip the tower on this but it has one of my highest CTRs.

Is it possible to beat out a wikipedia entry for your keyword using keyword sniping?

On single post pages, the original “About”, “Search” and “Admin” sections get shoved to the bottom right. Was that intended?

Was the RSS feed icon causing an issue? Or was there some other reason for removing it?

@ Chemotherapy

The ad is easily missed in my opinion, when visitors will arrive they will read the headline and slowly start to scroll down, doing so they will completely miss your Adsense ad.

Use the Shylock Adsense plugin to insert your Adsense, google for it and you’ll find it right away.

Hi Court:
If putting up an informational niche site that is not updated frequently, why is blog software necessary? (Assuming one can do html, php, css and do the head tags, h1 tags, page titles, menus, keyword sprinkling, etc., oneself similar to what you do). That is much more flexible, less complicated, and you know what you got.

And,specially, why have comments on a niche site that is not a blog? Facilitating comments seems be the only reason to use blog software. (It’s a hassle to code comment handling oneself.) What am I missing?

Thanks for an interesting and informative site.

Its faster in any case. You can take free themes and modify parts you want. There is also a comment system once you need it - the same with postings. Change the design instantly with only one click and one new theme upload…For beginners its the more flexible solution than a static html page.
