Dateless Sniper Theme - Tutorial Video

June 11th, 2008 by Court

After creating the latest version of the Dateless Sniper theme (Dateless Sniper 2.0), I thought that it might be a little difficult to implement everything that the theme can do. In order to help you guys to get the most of this theme, I decided to make a little video that shows you how to install and configure it. Guys please watch the video, it will help you to understand more about getting ranked in search engines. Please comment on this post if you have any questions!

Excellent tutorial! I just tweeted it to my network - I really like how you showed each step one at a time.

Very nicely done, Barbara

That’s a great video, thanks. Makes implementing things so much easier. It’s also a lot easier to point people to a video than to try and explain things.

If only I had 20 minutes to watch this at work…I will definitely be watching this when I get home. Although I’m fairly apt at working with wordpress themes, I feel like there are a lot of subtle hints & tips that can be gleaned from a video like this. This might be written as an installation/configuration guide, but I’m willing to bet there is a lot more to be had.

Great video tutorial Court! Thanks for taking the time explaining and walking through each step. This should help a lot of people setup their sites correctly from the beginning.

Thanks for the video Court. It’s nice to know that i was setting it up right.

I know ur super busy..but would you consider making a video about the
correct way of using All in One SEO plugin with Dateless Sniper??
I have seen some on youtube.. but I don’t trust them.

Also, i know many people were having issues of posts moving down.
I found a Plugin that helps users control post order. Can you check it out
and see if you have any issues with it.

Leaving adsense off the site altogether is an SEO positive. Google is rarely pleased with the quality of sites using adsense so avoiding it altogether gets you better ranking.

Chas thanks for your comments. However, there are plenty of Adsense-monetized sites that rank #1 in Google over competitors that don’t use Adsense.

Why you think Google would penalize sites for using a Google Product (adsense) is beyond me!

Keeping Adsense off early is a positive I think. Its not adsense that creates the problem, but the fact many use adsense on MFA sites which are thinly populated with content. A quality site with authority will have no problem with adsense. If you cover a page in ads and don’t have original quality content, than you will have a problem with ranking, but it isn’t the adsense doing it.

Fantastic post with the video tutorial. What took you so long to get on the video bandwagon?? Your video is an answer to prayer for a newbie.

Question: Can you possibly do a video tutorial on how to change the theme’s header graphic? I’ve heard through the grapevine that a ton of people are using your “Sniper” themes and the browsing public is beginning to recognize them. By showing us (newbies) how to change the theme’s header graphic, each of the themes will become more unique and less recognizable a keyword sniper theme for adsense.

Thanks again for a great post.

Yes, another vote or instructions on changing the header graphic or other ways to make this theme look unique.

Great video, Court. I set mine up right along with the video. Excellent.

I got a question:

I’m trying to add Adsense code so the Ad shows up only when somebody actually decides to go and read the post. Is that possible?

This is a great tutorial video! I love when bloggers do stuff like this and I wish they would do it more often.

When discussing an exercise on my blog that is pretty difficult to explain, I usually will find a youtube video that shows the proper form (or sometimes I’ll show one with the improper form to point out mistakes). People really appreciate this and it is the same with any type of tutorial. We can’t take for granted that everyone will understand just by our written explanation. Good post, Court!

You have to add tags in the form below the post content form. There is a box to add tags. You add them there, then they go in the sidebar automatically.

I will try and make this short. But being a Newbie - I think that’s the proper term. Just learning all of this stuff from scratch and I feel like a Premee - anyways Courtney - we have found your site and it is a godsend. We have keyword sniped, have a domain name, found a webhost and downloaded Word Press. Written so far 5 articles (not published yet) but now I have tried to download your Sniper 2 to follow along (using FTP as shown from Caroline Middlebrook’s Ebook) but when I go back to my site to themes it says Broken Theme installed but incomplete - themes must have a stylesheet & template. I have no idea what I have done wrong - but I’ve tried this 5 times and I am getting nowhere. Can someone please help using simple terms. I am so new at this that each term sends me down the “rabbit hole” to find out what everyone is talking about. I know I need to learn all this but it’s overwhelming when it is all Greek. Thanks everyone - hope I’ve given enough information for you to help on the answer.

There may be a problem with a file missing or the folder structure being messed up.
On windows, depending on the program you use, a zip may uncompress with the following structure:
/dateless-sniper-20/dateless-sniper-20/(files)
So, when you upload, the structure is messed up.

I’d suggest deleting the theme off your server via http://FTP.
Delete the theme off your computer
Start fresh
Download the theme again and unzip it

Here, check the folder. It should be 1 folder, when you open you should see multiple files. You only want to upload the folder that has the files in it and no other folder it’s in. (hope that makes sense)

Make sure your folder structure on your server (ftp) is like this:
/wp-content/themes/dateless-sniper-20/

and inside that folder are all the files

Tree structure would be like this
+wp-content
++themes
+++dateless-sniper-20

I’ve tried the theme myself with no problems. I’d try starting fresh and making sure your structure is right. That “should” work.

Great video Court. I’m digging the theme so far too although I did add a few hacks. I removed the ‘fade’ div as it caused a horizontal scrollbar on my site, I also widened the pages display at the top so I could fit in an extra button or two. Minor stuff really, I just needed it to feel more like home. =)

Thanks for the great template, and kudos on the video.

I am going to be deploying this (awesome) resource for a number of clients. Thank you so much for running this video tutorial because it showed me a few features I might have missed otherwise.

For what it’s worth, that funky wavy symbol is called a tilde which is pronounced Til-deh (in a former life I was a typography nerd, sorry).

In my work I’ll be deploying over a wide variety of sites but all within one industry. A lead-gen (i.e. consulting) industry. I’ll also be using a variety of analytics and usability tools to measure performance of goal-state locations for things similar to adsense. Let me know if there are things you would like to know from my research. I would love to see the sniper theme further developed for more performance optimization possibilities.

Thank you again, guys and gals.

I have one question that someone could answer, if they know anything about Dateless Sniper 1.0 I want to put no-follow tag on Contact and About pages but I can’t figure out where those URLs really are.

I am probably missing something obvious, but since I lost more then 1 hour in trying to figure it out, I think it’s smarter to ask.

Thanks to anyone who tries to answer this.

Courtney is certainly my mentor. Great website and great video. Keep up the good mentoring. And thanks again everyone.

Question: Will my site be in any way adversely affected if I insert Google Analytics code into the theme’s main index page?
