You want to become a authoritative site about whatever your niche is and your going to want to have the freedom to run different forms of monetization and analytics . That wont be possible on a domain @wordpress.com or anything else for that matter. Not saying you wont have a high page rank but never the same freedoms as your own .com @ How to use filezilla- I never even tried it. I used to use coreFTP lite until I began using wordpress. Now I dont even bother since EVERYTHING including plugins can be installed right from the WP dashboard. Hell, I dont even download them anymore I use the automated install process.
