Money Always Flows to the Solution

September 17th, 2008 by Mark

What problem does your website solve for its users?

Does the answer to that question fly off your lips? Did you have to think about it? Can you answer it even after thinking about it?

How about this - fill in the blanks in the following statement:

“I give my users _________ and I get ________ in return.”

Am I overstating things if I say the key to success with any website is found in those two blanks?

A couple of examples…

On my ecommerce site: “I give my users a variety of trailer hitch accessories and I get money in return.”

On my wife’s personal blog, she would say: “I give my friends and family updates on my life (and about eight million pictures of our 11 month old son)  and I get a feeling of connection and happiness in return.

On CourtneyTuttle.com: “We give people simple insights into how they can get traffic from the search engines and we get coaching clients, membership website subscribers (until recently ;) ) and joint venture offers from other businesses in return.

If you don’t have a written plan for your site, you should at the very least be able to make a clear “I give this and I get that in return.” statement.  If you don’t have that mantra in your head every day, how can you expect your business to progress?

I don’t do a lot of blog reading, but often I’ll click through to sites I find in comments here on the site. I’ll read a post or two, and all too often I find myself saying “What’s your point?” On most of the sites I visit I don’t see any clear message of “The author is giving me this, and hoping to get that in exchange.”

Now you might not care if your users/readers see an obvious “give and receive” message on your blog, but think about this: In the last 30 days, I have spent over $5,000 just on information. The crazy thing is I’m GLAD I’ve just shelled out five grand for knowledge, because I know I’ve purchased some really high ROI solutions to a few of the problems we face in our business.

If you want to make money, you have to be the provider of a solution for which a large enough group of people is willing to pay.

I don’t think that sentence reads very smoothly, but I’m leaving it alone. Go back over it a couple times and let it sink in.

What problem (faced by a large enough group of people) does your presence on the web solve?

Your primary goal, maybe even your obsession, should be to answer that question.

If you can’t fire off the answer, stop whatever else you’re doing and start figuring it out. Our experience at Court’s Internet Marketing School is the earning power of a site really takes off after a) the author discovers what problem he/she can solve for the audience, and b) the audience agrees.

Let’s Brainstorm Together

Maybe we can help you get started today by going through a little exercise in the comments section. Here’s how it will work: anyone who feels like they have a clearly defined “I give this and receive that in exchange” statement, please leave it in the comments. It’s some free advertising and a branding opportunity for your site. :) For those of you who aren’t quite sure yet, make your best attempt.

Everybody else, click through to the sites behind a few of the comments, then come back and reply to the site owner’s statement. Did the site match the give/receive statement? Leave some POSITIVE feedback. I’m putting everyone on notice now that any sarcastic and/or critical comments will be immediately deleted. Court and I have very thick skins; you can feel free to call us morons all day long. We’re not in the business of setting other people up for that same treatment though, so if you can’t say something nice…

I hope a few of you who are just getting started will put yourselves out there. This is a chance to have a very clarifying moment in establishing the direction of your site.

Great looking site, Will.

I notice your html title is “Watch Cartoons”. Is that your goal keyword with your SEO efforts? I see your homepage has a PR 4, so you have potential to rank well for quite a few animation related terms. Any plans or goals for your search traffic?

Thank you for visiting! “Watch cartoons” is my target keyword for the homepage, but I target more valuable terms with interior pages. I use the decent PageRank from the homepage to boost those interior pages by linking to them intelligently.

For example one interior page is currently #1 in Google for the the term “cartoon software”, and I’m working on others.

Fortunately I’ve been able to identify the worthy terms and am working on articles that can target those keywords.

This was an awesome article; especially considering I’m not 100% sure of the answer. There are many answers which probably means I like a true direction for my sites just now. Some answers are personal (I give people maps they want and in return hope for donations) and some are more altruistic (I give people maps they want in return I feel good people are using my product).

Great post all around.

Hello Dan. Glad you liked the article. You mention hoping to get donations. Do you mean you’d help people out and they’d donate money to you in return?

I’m wondering…what other gps related products/services could you put in front of your visitors that would turn into a more steady stream of income for you?

And I’m going to ask you the same question I asked Will - what’s your search engine plan?

I never thought people ever donated but I have since seen that people will donate for useful products and the maps I develop and release on my site have yielded donations. I think the best way for a more consistent stream of income is to review a few things that I can use affiliate links to. That way it will still seem like I haven’t laid on the advertising and thus people will still be inclined to donate but I can also have another stream of income.

I don’t really have a search engine plan mainly because I don’t know enough SEO. I made sure my articles use the titles in the url but other than that I don’t really have any plans. I try to make sure popular GPS blogs link to my new stuff which seems to help me get indexed in google quite quickly.

Wow, I have never really thought about my site in this way. I bet getting clear on this point really will have an impact on my site, and my business.

On the front end:

I give my readers tools to develop an internet marketing strategy that works and I get affiliate commissions in return.

In the background:

I give readers information on specific topics and I get adsense clicks in return.

Hi Mark,

yes, mainly, If you are speaking of goals. If you are speaking of motives, however, its a hobby, too. I really would like to establish on of those social-things. But then I would have to add lots of the respective features, which for me is a little bit too heavy to develop it myself. Although I put much effort into categorizing and SEOing, what really prevents the monetization is that most (if not all) of my keywords have no adsense ads in google at all.

Hi Mark,

uhm, clicked to fast on send-button. I have to add two points: I just started the site four weeks ago, and do not have very much traffic yet. If this changes, I will offer hiking maps via amazon affiliate-ads. What do you think about that and my SEO, that is, if I might ask you and your readers such questions?

At my political humor site, I entertain people and in return I get personal satisfaction. Of course, it seems to me that as the site continues to grow, I would be giving more than I receive. I can only get so much personal satisfaction, and then the cup is full. So there should be a way to compensate for that differential.

Now that the site is becoming an authority site, it should be passing that tipping point. Somehow, I will receive a greater amount of value in return. Could that be monetary? I don’t know, but I do know that it will enrich my life.

PS, great news for me. Google Radioactive Liberty, and notice the sitelinks!

What a cool question… Though very simple, I had truly never thought about it like that before.

My basic answer is “I give my users ‘computer support’ and I get ‘money and referrals’ in return.” But maybe my answer should be more specific in regards to what I offer. maybe something such as “I give my users ‘Great Computer Support At A Fair Price’ and I get ‘Referrals’ in return.”

I guess figuring out what sets me apart from the competition would be a good place to start.

Thanks Mark!

Hey Tim,

Thanks for getting involved. One thing I’d love to see on your homepage is more of a headline. People feel cheesy doing it, but if you slap a powerful value statement front and center for every visitor to see you’re likely to convert more of them to customers.

Head over to copyblogger and search “headlines.” Tons of good material there.

Great post Mark,

Let’s see, I provide my visitors with:
1. Helpful guides about laptops and other related topics such as viruses and free virus software
2. My BANS site provides eBay laptop/accessories auctions presented in a user friendly storefront, without the business and confusion of eBay, this, as well as, my unique and original content separates me from eBay and provides a better experience for those shoppers specifically looking for laptops.

In return, this site, as well as my others provide me with:

Money when visitors buy those products. That money brings me the unequal satisfaction of working for myself from home, the satisfying feeling of owning a successful business, and the great feeling of both personal and professional satisfaction and success as this and other sites, grow, gain traffic and make money as a result of my hard work and efforts.

Thank you! :-)

If you started making a lot more money sharing the solutions, would that mean you were helping a lot more people? Which would mean you’d get a lot more satisfaction?

How can you scale up your business?

That is a great article and to be honest one that I don’t think I have addressed very well - my aim was to build a blog that would bring to people’s attention things that I have seen and would love myself - some of them I am actually selling the product, some through affiiate links. So I guess my answer would be

“I give my users ideas for all sorts of gifts and I get affiliate revenue in return”

I was hesitant to post here though - because I am not sure that my blog really provides enough info and is maybe too affiliate focused.

Thanks for a thought provoking post.

That is true. The best entrepreneurs provide a solution, but it isn’t so easy coming up with a problem. For example; who would have ever thought of cellphones? I mean, can you imagine NOT having a cellphone. What would you do in an emergency or if your car breaks down? These are questions that the inventors of cellphones have created. Very good post and good food for thought:)

I definitely think that it is necessary to make sure you know why you are blogging; otherwise, what’s the point? While money does influence us to keep going or to start a blog in the first place, it cannot be the only thing that is influencing us because eventually, you’re going to get burnt out and not put as much effort into your blog as you would if you were actually gaining happiness and a sense of satisfaction from it.

THIS IS A 2009, CURRENT EMAIL LIST
Ever since the internet became popular, the word “scam” has become a daily term. I have never once tried any money making “system” outside of this because of that very reason. However, after reading reports on the validity and reputation of this money making system (seen on Oprah,CNN, and other media forums) I decided to give this one a shot… Especially since the so called “risk” is only $5.00. I mean, for the chance, what a joke right? Anyway, only hours after implementing this exact system I about fell out of my chair as money ACTUALLY started rolling in. I couldn’t believe it and for that reason, I wrote this intro and became a believer in this system.?
-Dude who wrote this. (hey at least I?m not taking his credit)
WHAT IS IT?
The idea is that of a system that takes advantage of the power of
compounding. And in a big way, let me tell you. First and foremost
understand that there are countless spin-offs of this system that try to make a “quick buck” off of people. Long lists, the 5 & 10 dollar trees, the birthday systems, etc… Those spin-offs do make money because of the ease of implementation of this idea, but they do NOT use the compounding advantage. This system is THE legit and profitable one.

Here is how it works…
There is a list of 5 email addresses (you’ll see it as you read further). Each of these people has already taken part in this system. When someone new comes along (such as yourself) he/she removes #1 off of the list, moves the other four email addresses up one position (i.e. #5 goes to #4, #3 to #2, etc.), and places their PayPal email address in the #5 position. This process is what develops the power of compounding. The bottom line is this… Honesty and Integrity creates Profitability. Following
this EXACT process is what creates the money, and that is why this system has been raved about in the media. Altering the system creates weak results. The legality of this system comes from the idea that you are of course creating a mailing list, and a “service” is being provided (more on that later.) Now on to how your $5.00 creates BIG money…
INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1:The first thing to do is highlight and SAVE this entire post in word
or notepad on your computer so you can come back to it later.
After that, if you are not already a PayPal user you need to go to
the PayPal website at https://www.paypal.com/ro/mrb/pal=RSKSG2WYPW67C and SIGN UP. If you want to be able to receive credit card payments from other people then you will need to sign up for a PREMIER or BUSINESS account (not just a PERSONAL account). This is highly recommended to allow others easy payment options. In order to place the initial $5 into your account, you will have to verify your bank account with PAYPAL (which may take a few
days). PAYPAL is 100% secure and is used by millions of people
worldwide.
STEP 2:Here is where the action occurs. The first thing to do is to send a
$1.00 payment to each of the 5 email addresses on the current list
from your PayPal account. To do this quickly and successfully, follow these simple steps:
1. Login to PayPal and click on the “Send Money” tab near the top of the screen
2. In the “Recipient’s Email” field enter the email address
3. In the “Amount” field enter “1″ (This is your $1.00 payment)
4. In the “Category” field select “Service” (Keeping it legal)
5. In the “Subject” field type “EMAIL LIST”, and in the “NOTE” field enter “PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST”. By doing this, you are creating a service and maintaining the legality of the system by “paying” for the service.
6. Finally, click on the “Continue” button to complete the payment.
Repeat these steps for each of the 5 email addresses. That’s it! By
sending the $1.00 payment to each address, you are implementing the compounding POWER of the system. You will reap what you sow!
Here is the current e-mail list:
*************************************************
The email list:

1) hatianpappy@yahoo.com
2) nmardeusz415@gmail.com
3) wmihai@gmail.com
4) wmelania@gmail.com
5) pawanna26@gmail.com

************************************************
STEP 3:Now take the #1 email off of the list that you see above (from your
saved file), move the other addresses up (5 becomes 4, 3 becomes 2, etc.) and add YOUR email address (the one used for your PayPal account) as number 5 on the list. This is the only part of the document that should be changed. ** Make sure your email address is the one you have registered with PayPal **
STEP 4 post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups or message
boards. Keep in mind that there are tens of thousands of groups online! All you need is 200, but remember the more you post the more money you make - as well as everyone else on the list! I’ve began to see money roll in before I even hit 100 posts, but try to hit around 200 to allow maximum exposure. Use Netscape, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or whatever your internet browser is to search for various news groups, on-line forums, message boards, bulletin boards, chat sites, discussions, discussion groups, on-line communities, etc.
For example?
log on to any search engine like yahoo.com or google.com and type in a subject like ‘MILLIONAIRE MESSAGE BOARD’, ‘MONEY MAKING DISCUSSIONS’, ‘MONEY MAKING FORUMS’, or ‘BUSINESS MESSAGE BOARD’, etc. You will find thousands and thousands of message boards. Click them one by one and you will find the option to post a new message. Fill in the subject which will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, and post the article with the NEW list of email addresses included. THAT’S IT!!! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away. After you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup.
HOW THE MONEY WORKS:
When you post 200 messages in various forums, it is estimated that at LEAST 15 people will respond and send you a $1.00 ($15.00). Those 15 will Post 200 Posts each and 225 people send you $1.00 ($225.00), etc. through 5 levels of email addresses. For comprehension purposes, here is an easy viewing chart:
1) 15(1) = 15 people ($1) = $15
2) 15(15) = 225 people ($1) = $225
3) 15(225) = 3375 people ($1) = $3375
4) 15(3375) = 50625 people ($1) = $50625
5) 15(50625) = 759375 people ($1) = $759375
As you can see, your $5.00 has multiplied exponentially. What other opportunity that is as simple as this can cash in the way this can?! I’m not going to say this is going to make everyone over $800,000, but within a few WEEKS you begin to see results, thanks to the speed of the internet!
When your name is no longer on the list, take the latest posting in
the newsgroups and begin the process again. Simply amazing…
Follow the system as described, and enjoy your PROFITS!!!
REMEMBER… HONESTY AND INTEGRITY = PROFITABILITY
YOUR NAME COULD CYCLE FOR A LONG TIME! THIS MAKES IT THE GIFT THAT
KEEPS ON GIVING.
This is excellent seed money to start or expand a business, buy your dream home, car and pay off whatever bills you may have. Good luck!
HOW TO POST TO NEWS GROUPS?
Use Netscape or Internet Explorer and try searching for various
newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.) Log on any search engine like yahoo.com, google.com, altavista.com, excite.com, etc., then search with the subject “millionaire message
board; or; money making message board; or; employment message board; or making discussions; or ”money making forum; or; business message board; etc.
You will find thousands & thousands of message boards.
Click on them one by one and you will find the option ‘post a new message’. Then Post this article as a ‘new message’ by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting copy then paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You’re done with your first one! It only takes about 60 seconds to complete postings on message boards after you catch on.when you get the money please give 25% to charity please.
REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!!
GOOD LUCK!!!! God Bless “Pay It Forward”
