How To Increase Website Traffic – 4 Essential Tasks

February 25th, 2009 by Court

Over the last four years I have made all of my money by getting website traffic and turning that traffic into dollar bills. People ask me all the time how to increase website traffic, so I figured I would offer some honest, straightforward advice.

Social Traffic Isn’t Worth It, In Most Cases

If you just want to throw up huge numbers there are a lot of ways to do it. StumbleUpon, Digg, and Reddit can send you huge numbers of visitors. Many of you have already chased that traffic and some of you have probably succeeded. I personally have been able to get loads of traffic that way so I’m a good person to listen to on the subject. The honest truth is that it’s incredibly difficult to make money from those traffic sources. Those individuals typically have very short attention spans and will leave your site just as quickly as they found it. If you don’t believe that, I highly doubt that you’ve tried to sell to them before.

When you go through the process of learning how to increase website traffic, I want you to focus on the most important type of traffic there is – search traffic. Once a stream of traffic starts coming from Google it will come day after day after day, whether you continue working or not.

There’s only one type of person that can make social traffic work and that type of person is naturally gifted. If you are an extremely gifted writer or personality, social traffic might be an awesome fit for you. If you aren’t it’s going to be an enormous waste of time because you won’t be able to influence the short attention spans that will find you.

Search traffic is honestly a lot easier to work with. There’s a huge difference with search traffic because they are already looking for you. Since they already want what you have to offer, the process is a LOT easier.

How To Increase Website Traffic From Search Engines

Getting more traffic to your website from search engines is actually fairly easy to do. I want to keep this lesson fairly simple for you so I have organized the basics into four separate tasks:

  1. Researching your market.
  2. Choosing keywords.
  3. Creating keyword-optimized content.
  4. Getting links to your content from relevant pages.

Most people go wrong because they don’t do any research in the first place. To fully understand this process, I want you to take a look at how you found this article. You probably did a search in Google for ‘How To Increase Website’ traffic, or something similar (or you are a regular reader of mine). You found me because I anticipated that people would be searching for this, and created a solid article on this topic.

Researching Your Market

You may be curious about how I was able to anticipate that you would be doing this search. This is pretty easy if you take a look at the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. You start by typing on topics that are related to the content of your site. In this case I started by searching for ‘website’ because I help people to learn to make money with websites. The tool showed me a bunch of keywords that people search for and are related to websites. Website traffic was one of the terms that came up. Since I understand a lot about getting more website traffic, it’s obviously pretty easy for me to write about.

Hopefully you can see why this article came to be. I want to be found by people who want to get more targeted website traffic.

What you need to do is use the Adwords tool to take a look at topics that people are searching for in your market. You will obviously know your market better than I would so you need to think about different aspects that people need to understand. Type those terms into the tool and take a look at what comes back. Expand on the terms that come back and you’ll probably find some winners in there.

Choosing Keywords

Choosing keywords to me is a matter of looking at your competition and deciding how strong it is. I wrote about this concept extensively on The Keyword Academy: Choosing A Topic For A Website. I was actually talking about choosing a topic for a site, but the same concepts apply. You can use those metrics to choose topics to write about that you can realistically get ranked for.

Where most people go wrong is that they only choose the super competitive keywords that everyone else is using. Finding the easy ones will make your life a lot easier so I would definitely start there. Increasing traffic to your website becomes one of the easiest things ever when you write about topics that have weak competition.

Lately I picked up a site that’s about food and honestly it’s one of the easiest things ever. I’m barely trying and getting ranked really well. It’s so much easier than my internet marketing topics it’s not even funny. If you can try to find keywords that aren’t that competitive it will be a lot easier. Obviously you don’t want to write off topic, so your search will be limited to the scope of your website.

Creating Keyword-Optimized Content

Creating content that will rank well for a keyword is honestly really easy. I have written extensively about this and so I’ll point you to an article I wrote about this: How To Target a Keyword With a Post Page. The only thing I want to add to that is that the better your post, the better it will work. If your post excites people enough to get them to point some links at it, it will rank better and it will rank more quickly.

Getting Links To Your Content From Relevant Pages

If you’re starting out, this might seem like it’s pretty difficult but after you get going, it really isn’t. The first thing you should try to do once you create your website is find some friends in your industry. This will help you a ton because when you need to get some extra links, they will be there to help. There are also a lot of other methods that you can use. You can write articles for EzineArticles and they will allow you to link back. For that matter, you can write articles that can be submitted with Unique Article Wizard, or a similar service.

Getting links is often as simple as asking. When I started CourtneyTuttle.com, I looked through all of the make money sites on Technorati to find beginners who had sites similar to mine. I then participated on their sites and made friends with them so that we could help each other out. We have helped each other a lot over the last few years and the links we have passed back and forth have made a huge difference. Now that I have some people reading my site building links has also become a lot easier. That said, I started out with zero traffic just like everyone else and overcame that with hard work.

Thanks for this Court, and the post on thekywordacademy, I tend to get carried away with all the “techniques” when really I just need to build some links. Is UAW the only paid service you use for link building?

These techniques still works, and I think many IMs find UAW truly useful, and as they say, “Content is still the King”. :)

Hi court. first let me say i love your website and it taught me a great deal. it’s probably the only website which is straight to the point and gives very valuable tips without “I’m the best and if you give me 900$ I’ll show how i did it”.
but i have two questions.
1.on your “best work” you have “the search engine pipe dream” post which contradicts allot about what you’re saying about in this post IMO. i mean here you say how google traffic is what we should be aiming for, but on the other post it’s all about the social media.

2. what happened to the HowToMobile case study? after week 8 there was no update?

Good common-sense ideas. You can never go wrong when you go back to the basics. I love the Google Keywords tool – it’s one of my favorites when deciding on a new site to build.

It is simply beyond me why so many new IMers go for the competitive markets like they do. Financial markets, MMO markets, they even try to rank for SEO terms…

I’m with you on the food and drink niche, I’ve got two I launched this month and am just filling with content right now, haven’t hardly promoted at all and they are already showing nice results. Since it is mostly uneducated internet users that search for these kinds of things, they aren’t ad blind and the traffic converts pretty well.

I agree about social traffic not being a direct money maker, however it does have other value. If you can get that huge rush of traffic, especially from digg, it will result in a large number of back links, which will payoff in the long run. Stumbleupon not so much, but you can still get links through it.

What are the keywords that drive traffic to Boing Boing, Lifehacker, Techcrunch, Prez Hilton, or the Huffington Post?

My guess is there are over 1 million different keywords over the course of a year that will drive traffic for each of those blogs. It is almost all long tail traffic. My site which gets a tiny fraction of what those big sites get has over 25,000 different keywords a year bringing in traffic. Only 2 of those did I actively work at, and they bring in about 5% of all traffic.

Keywords and this approach are great for small, niche sites. It doesn’t work for larger sites. Keywords are great for sites which focus on solutions to problems, not for sites which deal in entertainment. One size doesn’t fit all.

I find StubleUpon to be as good a source traffic as Google, both in terms of quantity and quality. (I can totally see how this is not true for most people however) I have bounce rates of about 40% from SU, which means that when people find my site, most will click around. That can help lead to subscribers, which is exactly what I want in the long run.

I also think you are going to see big changes in Google in the next 1-2 years which will really hurt this approach to earning money online.

Sorry Gary you lost me as soon as you started listing sites that post like 20 times a day. Sorry for the bluntness but I would rather have a job.

What I would like to know is how much actual profit you’ve made from that traffic because to me increasing traffic just to increase it doesn’t matter. People clicking around also doesn’t mean anything to me. I know this might sound somewhat harsh but unless your site is a hobby, profit is what matters. I understand that some people run sites for fun and if you’re in that boat, do whatever you want. Since I teach about making money I’m going to show people what makes money.

Around here we make almost $1 per unique visitor and since a fraction of a percent of that income is from social sources like StumbleUpon, I’m not just throwing out theory.

If you have actual sales or profits that can prove otherwise, please post them.

Great post! And I definitely love the tips because they’re simple and very easy to remember. But I wonder if you can tackle about lead nurturing too. Once you get hold of your website traffic, your next goal would be to make them prospects and then sales-ready leads. You need to know how to nurture them along the way.

On your sites that you created these blogs do you always use adsense? Do you use affiliate banners? Amazon links? I’m just wondering if this new food site of yours is just an article blog with adsense or how do you monetize?

The people that are on my list of dofollow blogs asked to be there, genius. They’re willing to trade the comments for the links.

Of course you don’t leave the URL to you site with your comment – why would you? It’s a lot more fun to leave lame comments when you can’t be scrutinized. Nice. Hmm you used a fake email too, you must be pretty proud of you who are.

Court, Thanks so much for this information. I am a new blogger and only have a few posts on my site and as I go, I’m learning more & more about keyword optimization and SEO and the whole 9. I’m a complete novice but thanks to you and some others, you’re helping me understand the process. I used the google adwords tool for my last 2 posts but funny as it may sound, I’m still not quite sure I did it right. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to use the words that hundreds are searching for in order to get better results or the ones that hundreds of thousands are searching for. (hope that doesn’t sound silly, still learning) Any input on that one would help me tremendously. Thanks again, learning a ton from your information, thanks for sharing!

Marketers are too obsessed about search engine rankings, marketing strategies, and link building that they have forgotten one crucial step: lead analytics. Without it, it will be very hard for them to determine which of the techniques they implemented actually works and which one doesn’t.

Social networking sites can also be very helpful such as facebook, orkut, etc, these can bring large amount of visitors.

It’s funny how some of these commenters doubt Court and Griz et al. Especially when they rank on top of the SERPS for their chosen keywords that have search volume.

It’s funny because if you sat these doubters in a room face to face, they would probably blank out and look like a deer caught in headlights when you asked them why they thought these SEO “strategies” don’t work well for ranking.

And…if there was a way to reveal your adsense earnings what would they say about not being able to make money using the strategies you used to get to the top of the SERPS, gain traffic, get clicks, etc.?

Good job Court. Always a pleasure to read something by you.

I’m a newbie and have been silently reading this blog (and Griz’s blog) for a few weeks, and I too have noticed the “doubters” pop up occasionally.

I don’t understand why people get upset with them though. All anyone can do is put info out there, and it’s up to individuals to follow it or not. If people want to doubt, let them. It means less competition for those following the advice..

Social traffic doesn’t perform as well as search traffic. Those of us who are tired of fighting with the Big G might wish otherwise, but facts are facts.

I could see the value of social traffic trending up as sites like Twitter begin to grow to include a more traditional market demographic.

I have been promoting my marketing blog on Facebook and LinkedIn as well, and although I haven’t gotten any clients from those networks as I have from search traffic, I’m definitely seen as an authority figure in my network now. Friends I haven’t spoken to in a while drop me a note saying they just mentioned my name to someone, or that they really learned a lot by my last post.

The time it takes to increase traffic through social networks shouldn’t be completely neglected. Yes, if you just sign up for a network and friend everyone and their mother it wont do much for you, but if you build a community around yourself and help others social networking traffic is some of the best convertable targeted traffic out there.

Great info. Yep, I think PPC is great, but when I first started out I didn’t make any money just lost. I think newbies should learn and perfect the free methods first. Than when they start making money re-invest that and learn to do PPC.

That way when you lose money, and you probably will to start, it won’t be quite so painful!

I totally agree that social networking has become significantly useless..the amount of time people spend on twitter is not resulting to enough significant traffic to drive to your site..

All these social networking sites are essentially becoming constant spam-a-thons for people who want to get their voice out there amongst the millions who are already doing the same thing..

I would have to agree with that !

Cutting through the clutter is the biggest problem. You need to find your target customer.

Find them and you will make good money. Try and find tactics that target your ideal customer.

Spot on. My two cents would be to always use the contingency approach. Every situation, and therefore every website is different. Are you thinking longterm/short-term, are you a pro/hobbyist..

Which does apply for your situation? Ask yourself this question over and over again.

Social traffic usually sucks because people are just clicking from one site to the next. I have had a few sales due to social traffic before but by far and large the buying traffic definitely comes from the search engines. I remember court, vic and grizz talking about that extensively last year. I would say the best thing about links from bookmarking sites is that if you use longtail keywords on your bookmarks you can at least rank for some of those terms. And if you get links to those bookmarks and they rank for their keywords THEN you might get some targeted traffic.

Social media traffic is a good way of building quick attention for a site, except for a quick influx of visitors who don’t stick around or even read the full page so therefore no conversions. Though one in thousand can however turn to a customer!
But if dofollow can be great for backlinks!

I agree about social traffic not being a direct money maker, however it does have other value. If you can get that huge rush of traffic, especially from digg, it will result in a large number of back links, which will payoff in the long run. Stumbleupon not so much, but you can still get links through it.

I have learned that the social bookmarking and social networking sites are not bringing targeted traffic. They take a lot of work more than the SEO traffic.
If you do keyword research from the start, your site may get to the 2nd or 3rd page of Google. I think it is easier than to have traffic from social bookmarking or social networking sites if you did the homework from the get go.

Very true and I’ve had great success asking friends to do contextual link exchange with me on our posts. Such links are better recognized by Google compared to other types like reciprocal links or blog comment links and in fact all links that are “by themselves”.

Depending upon your medium there is always purchasing traffic through a sponsored blog post through a niche figurehead – like a mom blog. If your product is really awesome you have the ability to put faith in it and set it free. Sure, they will need to declare that they are doing a sponsored blog post but if they will always retain the rights to move forward while complaining. As long as you have a good product – they will stand behind it and suggest it to their followers.

The only sensible way to perform research these days is by using the likes of Micro niche Finder or Market Samurai as these programs parse all of the information returned annd display it in easily readable format.
