If you are reading this blog, you most likely have big dreams of becoming a successful Internet entrepreneur. If you are like me, the original source of your inspiration was reading about the success of internet marketers who make it seem easy to get rich online. However, you must beware of falling into the trap of being the follower. The follower thinks that if he or she just does what the A-list blogger or internet marketer is doing then he, too, will succeed. After all, if it works for the A-listers, then it will work for you, right?

The Herd Mentality

When Mr. A-lister becomes successful and attracts a large following, he will often create an army of followers. These followers do as he says, buy what he recommends, and promote what he promotes. However, 9 times out of 10, this all benefits Mr. A-lister because he is first. He leads the herd. The followers fall victim to the herd mentality, a phrase that is often used to describe behavior in the stock market. When you are a part of the herd, you are too late to profit.

Be an Actor, Not a Reactor

The key to being successful and standing out from the crowd is being unique and thinking on your own. If you are simply doing/publishing/selling/writing the same crap that everyone else in your niche is, how do you plan on standing out from the crowd and gaining attention? More importantly, why would anyone choose you over the A-lister if you are just an unknown carbon copy? Everyone will turn to the A-lister, who is already a trusted, established brand.

Innovation is the number one ingredient in the recipe for success. But don’t let that frighten you. Innovation comes in a million different forms. The smallest tweak to an idea that is already well known can be an ingenious innovation that makes you rich. You do not have to be a genius to be innovative, you just have to think for yourself and make sure you do not become a robot in the A-lister’s army.

When starting your online business, ask yourself this one question. “Am I using at least one idea that is all my own or am I taking an approach to something that is all my own?” If you can answer yes, then you are already much closer to success than the majority of new web entrepreneurs who are simply followers.
