When it comes to marketing, there are many different options of how to get your name out there and be known. But it all boils down to whether or not you want to push or pull your marketing efforts. Each business is different and every situation has its own details. The important thing to remember is that your situation may be different than everyone else’s also.

Push Marketing

When you talk about a push marketing effort, you are saying that you are going to push your product upon the consumer. This means that you are making active efforts to get your name and business out there with e-mails, websites or even cold-calling. This requires a lot of effort but at the same time, may be required if you are a first time business owner.

Pull Marketing

A pull marketing effort means that the consumer comes to you or searches for you when they need their products. This can easily be done by word of mouth, conference speaking or other media interviews. This may sometimes be considered a bit harder, but in the long run, it can save you more money. There are a few things to keep in mind no matter what method you choose to use.

Push It

If you decide to use the push method, one big tip is to get paid advertising. There are many different methods of obtaining paid advertising but use the source that will get into the most pages. You can also create and update an extensive e-mail list.

You could make two separate lists of both current and potential customers and keep them updated as you make changes or have new products to offer. You could also offer incentive based programs to others to encourage others to promote your business. A lot of people who are in the same business as you will be willing to help you out if you help them out too.

Pull It

If you decide to use the pull method, there are many things to be aware of also. One tip is to develop a good relationship with the media and get your name out there. Get others talking about you and what you are doing. Once one person starts talking about you, everyone will follow if they think there is interest from consumers. You could also volunteer your knowledge and expertise.

This will not only look good to the public, but will also mark you as an expert in your field. Another way to put your product out there is to start a blog and invite others to read it. Word of mouth is the best free publicity there is. As soon as you start a small wave, it will reach all along the shore side.

Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to decide between one method or the other. Whether or not you want to push or pull your marketing strategies, you are always welcome to try a few tips from each side. Maybe if you make a combined effort, you will see more benefits. Just try and find the situation that fits best for you and your business.
